  1. how is it that i couldn't find that website? I guess cyf.com would have been a good place to start when a google for "call you free" didn't return worthwhile results... oops.
  2. I've never heard of this program, and google didn't return any useful results. I would contact the software vendor and see if they can provide this information, or see if there's anything in your firewall logs that would help. It may also be that it won't work through NAT  (Welcome to the board, and sorry my answer isn't more helpful)
  3. telling you that the file already exists is just a standard function of any good file manager, konq is not using rsync to do this. i personally don't have much experience with rsync.
  4. I want to be able to point virtual hosts to directories inside a users public_html folder in their home directory while not having the site available via http://domain/~username/blah - is this simply a matter of removing the UserDir param in http's config? For some reason I have this feeling that doing that would make apache incapable of recognizing/using the public_html folder to serve up the sites, or am I wrong about that? Basically I want users to be able to go to: http://userssite.tld/ and get the site, but not at: http://servers.tld/~username/usersite.tld/ This is a server with multiple domains, and various users. I want them all to be able to administrate their own stuff from within their user directory, so far as I allow them. I'm currently doing a whole bunch of moving and setting up of various services (my first time setting up a server from scratch for LAMP + Mail + whatever else I want to mess with), so I may have more questions forthcoming.
  5. i just remembered rpmdrake may not show these...try just doing: urpmi kernel-source as root at terminal.
  6. I believe you need to install the package: kernel-source-2.6-2.6.12-12mdk search for kernel-source in rpmdrake (software installer) should result in a list, with this being one of the options. you need to choose the one that matches your kernel as far as version numbers - I'm not 100% sure that what I listed is the right version for your kernel.
  7. There are two different ways of installing software. You are currently trying to install from source, before doing that I would suggest seeing of the program is avilable via URPMI (Mandriva Control Center -> Software -> Install Software) or if you can find an rpm available on the internet. If not, move on to the source route, which requires a whole bunch of extra packages. I would highly suggest reading here, here and possibly this wiki entry. Let us know if you have any questions. (p.s. - you're not stupid. you're asking the exact same questions I did the first time I tried to compile from source, and I don't think I'm stupid ;) )

    MySQL Error

if he can hit the phpmyadmin site and get that error then apache is running. however, the mysql server may not be running, or is running on a port different than what phpmyadmin expects. Since phpmyadmin comes with xampp I would assume the ports are correct and the problem is that mysqld is not running. Check in the Services section of Mandriva Control Center and ensure that mysqld is running. Also be sure that you don't have any firewalls blocking connections to localhost (this should not be happening unless you've modified your firewall).
  9. could you posts the scripts you found? they are probably text files, you can just open them up in a text editor and post the contents. we can then tell you what to change to point at the right file. thanks!
  10. That's Avant Window Navigator, it's pretty nice though it still crashes occasionally.
  11. sticking with the darkish themes still
  12. that's why it's an rc, tthey haven't released the final product yet. the point of the rc is to find bugs like this. could you provide some more information? graphics card, network card, sound card, monitor, mouse and keyboard models. all of this would help in determining the problems. right now we have nothing to go on...
  13. Agree. Having worked in the computer security field for a short time (approx. 4 years, but as a Co-op/Intern - I know, it doesn't mean much!), I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. People like to call this "security through obscurity" - and it's really not that secure. Personally, if you are going to use anything use WPA. It doesn't take a hacker to break WEP, it just takes someone with the right hardware and a piece of software that's freely available. And yes, if we're talking about your little leecher who's just looking for free web, he'll bypass you and move on to an open network. But if, for some reason, someone is targeting you or looking to get some of your personal data (bank info, passwords, things like that), WEP will not do.
  14. Once you get used to Linux (and really, it's not that bad) you'll be able to do even more than you ever could in Windows, my friend

    UT 3 for linux?

not sure it was necessary to post that in both threads, one would have been enough. anyways, porting to linux is up to icculus. anything that doesn't come from his mouth isn't worth taking too seriously. he just put out the server for linux last thursday, so the client may be some time coming still.
  16. what were you doing when you messed it up? likely HAL isn't running, or possibly dbus...or whatever takes care of that stuff these days (I remember automount *shudder*)
  17. Wow man calm down... If you don't want to use it, don't. I don't see how the feature is mean, it's actually extremely time saving if you reboot a lot (you don't have to wait for the system to load up, then select your distro, etc.). I think you're being a bit over-critical especially since it's a feature you can just ignore and move on. I don't see why a sensible user would have such a big problem with it, and you haven't even provided reason as to why you seem to hate such a mundane and easily ignorable feature.
  18. The examples I saw had quotes, so that's what I went with...better safe than sorry I say! :)
  19. ok, i was just going by what I read on the configuration site (it had the quotes, so i assumed they were needed). i'm surprised that worked for you...it was a pretty random guess
  20. they are single quotes ('), and yes I believe they are required
  21. How comfortable are you with editing lilo.conf (or is Mandriva using grub now?) Either way...try adding this to the kernel appends: and then you'll have to reboot twice for the setting to take effect. this is really a wild guess...it may not resolve anything. If you need more specific directions I can give them, but I think if you go into the Mandriva Control Center you'll find somewhere under Boot/Boot Config there is a place to add kernel appends...(sorry, haven't used a recent Mandriva distro and they move stuff in MCC sometimes).
  22. Press your num lock key. If your problem is fixed you need to turn off Num-Lock on boot. I believe this can be done through Mandriva Control Center under Services, there should be a service named numlock, IIRC. If the above doesn't solve your problem post back...
  23. there is a way to ignore the bad pgp key, but I currently can't recall what it is...anyone?
  24. a dark theme from me this month... [click for full size (1680x1050)]
