  1. Sorry, I had been using MDV 2008.1 for many years and never figured this out. As far as connectivity issues, I had it (mdv 2005/2008.1) on numerous hdwr and it generally seemed to be dependent on the specific hdwr although I am a desktop user and had little use for w/l until recently. Currently running pclos 2012.12 and I had never any need for w/l until I loaded it onto a netbook, but as mentioned, font is so tiny on these devices, I missed the "network profiles" configuration in the Control Center. Apparently, if you configure (in MCC) your hdwr to connect in the net and internet "add a new connection" then connect, then go to "profiles" and add the current configuration, it will save it until the next time the hdwr "sees" that network and will either autoconnect or if not you can open the MCC/PCC and activate that profile. This is mandatory when using WEP or WPA due to password requirements. However, it appears that if you have at least ONE open network configuration saved in these profiles, then the device should pick up ANY open network and drakconnect should display that in the tray. Am still evaluating all these assumptions and will post back when confirmed. Thanks
  2. That did not seem to be working for me. That's what I get for having a netbook (tiny font). Did not see the "setup network profiles" in MCC> internet and networking. Apparently you connect and name the profile and it saves the configuration for that particular setup similar to what you describe. Am going to check this out for the next week or so then mark solved if it fixes issue. Thanks
  3. This should be simple but.... search always turns up posts and howtos regarding access point roaming within the same network or using different wifi adapters or other complicated dhcp, DNS stuff. I want one laptop with the same wifi adapter (internal) to connect to : 1. Home net (wpa pre-share key) 2. Library net (open) 3. coffee shop net (open) 4 friends net (wep- password) (obviously not at the same time) whenever I go there. Seems I have to delete the interface and re-enter each network's configuration in network center or in tray icon as I move from one network to the next over the course of several days. i might not go to coffee shop for two weeks or Library for a month but I want the connection there when I need it. Doesn't drakconnect have a profile saved somewhere? Once I set up each network I would like it that whenever the network I want shows up I can just click on it and it connects me? Am I missing something simple? Thanks
  4. [uPDATE] Sorry about the long delay in response and thanks for the replies. If interested in what may have happened to possible resolve this, read on. If not, no problem. Yes I had run memtest ( 3 passes) then reseated mem and ran for another 2 passes all OK. I had come to the conclusion that any xorg-server version > 1.6.5 was causing issues b/c any distro with newer xorg server gave me these " kick off" GUI console onto a black screen. (I was slamming Mint12,13, Mageia, MDV and several versions of PCLOS on to the lappy and what they all had in common was xorg-server>1.6.5) . This seemed confirmed when I loaded PCLOS 2010 ( with xorg-server = 1.6.5) and ran this lappy with no issues for the past 2 months with no more blackscreens, all hunky-dory and was settled in to use this laptop indefinitely. So, recently and co-incidentally found several issues that could either have been a direct cause to the original problem or interrelated somehow. 1. Turns out that the RTC battery in this Toshiba A305 was failing but only slightly. ( An hour over several weeks so it was almost imperceptible) In the past this has only caused annoyance issues with keeping correct time, however, is it possible that the RTC failure was causing BIOS settings issues such as external monitor settings that was causing the graphics to freak out? 2. Since pclos 2012.12 was running fine on several laptops, I decided to try using the original pclos 2012.12 LiveCD disk on a desktop and I got media error. Checked media and sure enough it failed. PLZ keep in mind that this iso passed md5sum and pretty sure I checked media initially but can't verify as notes were hurrried. Even tho the media failed, it did not register to me that this could have been a problem b/c I was pretty sure I had used this particular media to load pclos 2012.12 on to 2 Compaq CQ50s, a Toshiba C655 and two Tosh netbooks. with no problems - so why suspect the disc? Well, turns out that the netbooks were loaded via USB/SD card and the other 3 full size laptops may have been pclos2010 upgraded ( I am looking into that now). This would mean that the Toshiba A305 with all the issues may have been the only hardware that got loaded with the "tainted" pclos2012.12 disc. As of 7-7-12 I have replaced RTC battery. It was soldered to MB so I did have to disassemble everything and blow it all out. I was worried that the RTC charging circuit was bad but so far time is maintained. Also, burned a new pclos 2012.12 LiveCD from the ORIGINAL .iso, and so far this Tosh A305 has not "bumped off" into black screen. I have not installed yet but plan to within the next few weeks and will report back. In conclusion, I still can't point to an exact cause but the combination of bad hdwr (RTC) and bad media seems to have been a likely culprit. I cannot mark solved yet as I want to install and run this hdwr/sftwr combo hard for a couple months, I have installed MDV and many other distros many many times since 2005 and never ran across this combination of gremlins. This thing has eaten my lunch since summer of 2011. Wow ! Thanks for the help
  5. OK, two updates here. I was mistaken with "about:plugins" In FF >tools>addons>Plugins I see Shock In "about:plugins" I see Shock and FutureSplash which is apparently the renamed version of FlashPlayer from Adobe. I have the KDE > settings > network connectivity> Adobe Flash settings, but on the Adobe website there is supposed to be an actual control panel to adjust settings but nothing there. Also, I have no links to specific sites, but I don't seem to be able to play anything on youtube or metacafe and any "check flash" websites whether Adobe or otherwise show nothing- no version numbers, no spinning monkeys, nothing. Sorry I don't have exact numbers but we are talking about Mageia 2 KDE running FF10/11 and Flash(FutureSplash) 11.2.xxx.xx. There are two recommended installers (scripts I guess) in MGA repos which then download the flash from the Adobe site and install for the user.Someone over in Mageia said he had not updated the MAQeia for MGA2, so maybe the script is installing a new version of flash that is incompatible with FF. There seems to be chatter over in PCLOS forums about issues with latest Flash and FF versions being incompatible. Read somewhere that someone downloaded ALL archived releases of flashplayer, extracted libflashplayer.so and started plugging them in until he got one to work! Quite dedicated. I will say that I uninstalled Flash and installed gnash, an alternative, but video is choppy and can only get 240p with audio. 360p is choppy with no audio. There is someone on pclos forums who calims it is the Radeon 9250 card causing the issues, however all my desktop effects are rocking along fine so why wouldn't it like flash? ( I did try to watch content with effects disabled - no go) Apparently this is the last version of Adobe Flash for Linux. Maybe this is their way of discouraging. Stumped for now Thanks
  6. Yes. Tried recommended method according to MAQeia. Also tried installing outside of repos, also tried gnash. Flashplayer control center shows up in KDE settings manager and there is libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins but Adobe site indicates no flash installed and about:plugins in FF indicates none installed.
  7. Sorry if in wrong forum but thought the Mageia forum was just for general chat so here it is, Mageia 2 KDE running FF 10.0.4. flash content does not even play. Either "plugin needed" or black windowbox. Enabled non-free repos as recommended. Apparently MGA has scripts flash-player-plugin and flash-player-plugin-kde that download and installs Adobe Flash ( v. 11.2.xx.x) but FF recognizing it as Shockwave. When I install these plugins, Adobe flash control center is indeed added to KDE control center and there is a libflashplayer.so found in /usr/lb/mozilla/plugins, However no flash content can be seen and Adobe "test flash version" site shows nothing installed. about:plugins- shows nothing installed FF>tools>addons> shows only Shockwave have tried gnash (flash alternative) but videos are choppy. I thought it might be ATI radeon 9250 graphics but all desktop effects fine. tried watching video with effects disabled but still no content Have read here and other forums about Adobe flash being 64 bit and FF being 32 bit. so it being incompatible but I know flash was working in MDV2008.1 and currently in PCLOS 2010 and 2012 so somehow they got it going. Any help appreciated
  8. Unfortunately my experience has been the opposite: Printerdrake has detected and installed many printers for me over the years whereas installing andd configuring printers from CUPS has been difficult. Thanks Unfortunately I cannot get CUPS to accept any username or password including root so checked in /etc/cups.Some where along the line, the ppd file for the Samsung got renamed Samsung.xxx.ppd.old and a new file got put in place. Once I removed the new file and removed the ".old" suffix all was well. Don't know what happened b/c used to have quick PDFs with Samsung but still suffering slow PDFs compared to the Brother multi-function but that is for another thread. Thanks
  9. USB connected Samsung ML-2151N mono-laser printer was automagically installed on PCLOS 2010 on Toshiba A305 laptop via printerdrake and has been fine for about 2 months with all apps except PDF's which have been slow but I did nothing about it until now, so I tinkered with some GUI settings and printer now no longer prints. This printer has been automagically recognized and operational for years on MDV 2005LE, 2008.1, and most recently on a desktop with PCLOS 2009.1 and the Tosh laptop with PCLOS 2010. 1. A Brother DCP7020 prints quickly including pdf's on the Tosh laptop (pclos 2010). 2. The Samsung prints fine including quick pdf's on two desktops (MDV2008.1) and another desktop with PCLOS 2009.1. Preface: Samsung shows up in lsusb on Tosh laptop I generally hard cycle the printer and reboot after all the following procedures: 3. So now let's just stick with Samsung on Tosh laptop. Removed printer and reinstalled via PCC. Samsung is installable via printerdrake via PCC and then seen by CUPS and shows up in application print dialogues- but no printing 4. Removed printer again via printerdarke- tried reinstalling via CUPS - no go - CUPS admin in browser accepted root username/ password ONCE but no longer will accept any combination of username and psswd. Have read threads about adding cupsys, lpadmin to /etc/group. etc etc. Should not have to do this.(sorry but don't think much of CUPS web administration, never have, and neither do others) BTW, I CAN delete printer from printerdrake but CANNOT delete it from CUPS once it has been installed via printerdarke (PCC), so deleted printer again via PCC printerdrake. 5. Installed Samsung unified linux driver which installs fine but then "add printer" does not recognize its own printer. I must have altered something in trying to solve slow pdf's ( 1 page every 2-3 minutes) but don't know what I did. Can't figure why Samsung shows up in lsusb, printerdrake, CUPS and application dialogues, but no printing from ANY app, including printerdrake test pages. Final clue:(I believe CUPS is showing this USB connected printer on a parallel port) Related question: Why does task-printing package show up as installed but size is 0 bytes in synaptic? The Brother DCP all-in-one mono-laser is working fine on the Tosh so I guess task-printing must be installed and working? Yes? Any ideas appreciated
  10. KDE 4.6.5 on PCLinuxOS 2012 ( 2.6.38-8) on Toshiba A305 videocard Intel Mobile 4. This software runs fine on a Compaq CQ50 with same graphics card.default install wants to use i810 and later driver, specifically i915 Random xserver crashes - black screen/ working mouse- BEFORE and after login and during sessions. Cannot reproduce but has happened over the past few months about every 5th login and every 2 hrs when in a session. Many various error messages in /var and in .xsession-errors- too many to list but mainly regarding DBus disconnecting or cannot be connected. Things tried: -With and without desktop effects enabled -Intel and Xorg drivers -with and without xorg.conf (this seems to provide best results) -Different kernels (pae, bfs, slightly older, slightly newer including latest) -adding i915.modeset=1 to boot option -delete ~.kde -Adding Terminate server="True" to kdmrc After a crash Ctrl+Alt+F(1-6) gives terminal. can login but cannot startx - error is either "xserver already running" or "cannot connect to server" Ctrl+Alt+F7 gives me a text boot screen hung at "starting display manager" Ctrl+ Alt+F8 returns me to the GUI session with all apps open as if nothing happened If I hit CTRL+Alt+Bckspc immediately after crash I get GUI login. If after I launch another terminal session, it does nothing. Any ideas appreciated. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  11. Basically use the PC for business and rely on: OO (or LO if available for mdv 2008.1) need to upgrade grsync (or if luckybackup is available will use it) digikam any kind of .pdf viewer xsane seems OK used to use kmail but have been trying T-bird I'm fine with Konq and Krusader (Dolphin has finally gotten decent but I'm not ready for KDE4 or it's not ready for me) Had it with FF constant """"advances""" , I may try Seamonkey Thanks for the replies. Not sure I have the time nor expertise needed for building packages, but Will poke around when I get the chance and take the advice about pbone. BTW, mdv2008.1 is already installed on Dell optiplex 170L and has been running fine for 2-3 years but the software needs upgrading.
  12. Are there reasonably updated packages still available in ANY repos for MDV2008.1 and if so where might I find them and a list of version #? Thanks
  13. Well it's been almost 24 hrs, which is pretty good but just had xserver crash with simple scrolling in browser with USB mouse. There was no intensive GPU activity. . It is my understanding that relevant logs must be accessed via ssh from another machine while suspect machine is crashed. Is this correct? Does not Xorg.0.log.old provide this? If so, I can post Xorg.0.log.old or wait until another crash and provide the log retrieved via ssh. The kdm.log immediately after crash is: ( I have read that "fb not found" is ignorable" Don't know if true or not.) Is it possible that some simple touchpad/mouse is problematic and /home/user/.kde config files are not reading properly/ Should I rename or delete each users .kde folder which should reset it with the new x configuration? 2. There is also a /usr/share/config/kdm/kwinrc file that has been implicated in xserver crashes over in archlinux and gentoo forums. Plausible? 3. Is it possible to downgrade xserver from 1.10.x? I have another laptop testing a slightly older version of pclos also with Intel Mobile 4 graphics but with older xserver and with no crashes. Most pclos mirrors only have latest version but I did find one or two with the older xserver 1.6.5. Obviously if there are massive dependency issues then it is a no go but maybe worth a try. 4 Final question: currently using MDV 2008.1 KDE3.5.x on desktops for business. All has been well for 2 years well. I have hesitated to migrate to KDE4 for various reasons but am posting this from MDV 2010.1 ONE LiveCd and all seems well. Just using this Toshiba A305 for testing so there is no data on board. Probably going to repartition and reinstall pclos and MDV in dual boot. Unfortunately I can't remember if each plays nice with each others bootloader. I seem to remember each will respect the other's MBR so does it matter which install first? The random xserver crashes on pclos although infrequent, are completely unacceptable in a business office network setting. Also the rolling release aspect of pclos is not comforting, so am willing to give a go at my old friend MDV. How is it going with Mandriva, Mageia (seemed OK but default fonts were barely legible) and what are the prospects for a STABLE Mandriva future? Specifically are the following available in repos?: could not find: AdobeReader LibreOffice I do use and did find Digikam grsync xsane krusader appreciate your time Thank you
  14. OK renamed xorg.conf (xorg.conf does not exist in /etc/X11 anymore) and rebooted into 1024x768 which gave two black strips down each side. Then went to display properties and selected native resolution of 1280x800.logged out then into different user but was missing home and trash folder. Logged back out/in and there they are! All looks normal! very nice. Am running GPU intensive stuff as I post. Will also leave unattended for periods and brush the touchpad or do simple drag and drops and I will try to crash this x configuration over the next day or so and get back to you. OpenGL screensavers in KDE display configuration still crash xserver (not during test but when I hit ESC) but that is not important. Stability is. Read somewhere about not needing xorg.conf but didn't believe it until now! Why would this configuration work? If you have any further instructions please let me know. Thank you
  15. Will give that a go and let you know. It may take until this eve or tomorrow as I am building my own local repository from an earlier release and am d/ling quite a few packages from a mirror before it gets updated to the new pclos 2011 release. Thank you
