  1. Just a small side not, Fedora Core 2 Test 3 (Final RC) was released yesterday. Anyway, Fedora is a great distro, though you are going to have to go out and find <freshrpms.net> packages to play video and mp3 audio (RH has started to run away from multimedia since the mp3 licencing fiasco). Otherwise it is a great distro.
  2. Hehe.... i think I just got a new avatar!
  3. if I were you I would run Slackware or Vacotr Linux
  4. What about "Sam and Max" and the monkey island series
  5. If you must get WineX, buy it from transgaming or build it from the CVS (minus the install sheild stuff). There are *other* means by which to obtain it, but common, stealing is wrong, right?
  6. My favorite type of game is a hybrid called */RPG. I love RPG's and I really enjoy games with RPG elements in saide game (Deux Ex, Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem)
  7. Relic2K, It looks interesting, but doesnt really bring anything to the table. unless it installed the software for me and ran perfectly everytime, I dont think it is worth it.
  8. VeeDub, I know for certain than some DX games to run under wine, because I have ran them.
  9. Nope no way to run them unless you have a PSX or epsxe...
  10. It's ok.... I really miss the M1A1 zooming and being silence. Ah the days of CS docks with my silenced USP .45 and Silenced zooming colt.
  11. I am trying to build a multidisk server. The way I want to set this up is: Comp 1 Phoenix(Slave) -P133 - 3 hard-drives (fire, ash, rebirth) Comp 2 Hydra (Master Server) -900Mhz Athlon - 1 HDD 2 partitions (hydra, data) Comp 3 Centaur(slave) - 1Ghz Athlon - 2 HDD's (man, horse) Comp 4 Loki (slave/Desktop) - 2600+ Athlon XP - 1 HDD - 2 Partitions to forward (downloads, data) I want all of these drives to show up in the master server (hydra) as /mnt/Phenoix/fire /mnt/Phoenix/ash /mnt/Phenoix/rebirth /mnt/hydra/data/ /mnt/Centaur/horse /mnt/Centaur/man /mnt/Loki/downloads /mnt/Loki/files All of the computers are behind a firewall and the master server (hydra) has the SSH ports forwarded to it. I would like to have all of the slaves connect via SSH or NFS. What would be the best and most secure way to set this up so I have complete access to all my data?
  12. If you want you can encode files in a custom encryption.. or a whole drive. There are a ton of crypto books around
  13. I really like Gimp 2.0, but the bezel curves tool now really bothers me. Otherwise I am happy with the latest offerings
  14. Two distros to try: Zipslack and Overclockix. I know you have dated hardware, bit Zipslack has no GUi and Overclockix has fluxbox, which should beable to run.
  15. Actually, DirectX is an API. Both transgaming's WineX and Winehq's WINE have directX support built in. Most of it does work, just odnt expect anything over DX8 to work at all, and DX 8 support is a little buggy. If you want to play games, use either one of these, but be warned, WineX isnt free, but includes Install-sheild system, Wine doesnt, but it is free.
  16. Mine is a simple sotry of a simple man.... Back in '98 I pick up a book on Red Hat 5.2 with Redhat 5.2 just to see what is was like. So, I played with it for a while, but still used Windows 98 for my main OS. In 2000 I finally got my own PC when I went to college and bought Mandrake 7.2. It was fine, but no internet (AOHELL...) so still WIn ME stayed on my desktop. Then, I got my own place, and cable internet, nd at the same time was forced to use UNIX (Sun Spac SOLORIS) for my programming classes. I bought Red Hat 7.3, then downloaded 8.0, RH 9, Fedora Core etc. All in all I have used: Red Hat: 5.2, 7.3,8.0,9.0,Fedora Core 1,FC2T1/2/Rawhide (various) Mandrake: 7.2,8.0,8.1,8.2,9.0,9.1,9.2,10CE Debian Knoppix/Gnoppix/overclockix Slackware 8,9.1 SuSE 8.1 Vector Peanut Corel and attempted LFS
  17. Personally, I would go with Gnome and fluxbox. Gnome and gdesklets really do put to shame KDE and SuperKaramba. I typically use fluxbox though because it *just works* Little to no overhead, quick and simple. Anyway, use what you feel comforitable with.
  18. Hehe, SID (unstable branch) is more stable than MDK in most aspects...
  19. You could just use the stable branch of Debian. It's almost always kept somewhat up to date and you know it doesnt have an eod of life.
  20. It's linux... thats stable, and the orginal apt-get king!
  21. Tried it a while ago, anyway, sometimes, it just refuses to write to the MBR
  22. Tweaks to make it run fast, eh? Typically you have a coice between framerate and visual appeal. Anyway, drop the resolution of UT2004 down to 800x600, and disable the lighting effects (most notable on ONS levels... if you even notice it). Anyway, what you are seeing is the differnece between OpenGL and DirectX (both have there ups and downs). Personally, I dont see any framerate differnces between 800x600 and 1024x768 on my computer, but i do notice a little bit of slow down everyonce and a while. Oh, if you think it is a memory problem, try running a low overhead GUI, like fluxbox.
  23. You should have turned it up and not rebooted. The reboot was not needed. Anyway, the fact that there are no errors makes me think one of two things. Either the board has a bad jack, or the sound settings are wrong. Check the PCM channel and make sure it is turned all the way up
  24. I solved the problem, dont use Mandrake
  25. try using the ESD sound server. It has a little lag (which can be fixed), but will play mulitple sounds at a time.
