  1. For me, a few reasons: 1. Availability for reasonable price. Since Internet bandwidth in Indonesia is pitiful (not to mention expensive), there are pretty much only a couple of distros that you can get for under 5 dollars including the guide book. Those are Fedora Core, Mandrake, and Slackware. Among these, Mandrake is the most complete. 2. Time. I just don't have time anymore to distro hop. In fact, I just ended my Mandriva 2005 LE x86_64 bit trial because I just don't have the time to download everything I need from the net and tweak them to what's usable for me. So I changed back to 10.1 for my desktop. 3. Familiarity. I can teach people how to use Mandrake easily because I am familiar with it and its quirks. So I can always find ways to work around it whenever there are problems.
  2. Postfix is actually quite easy to work with if all you want to do is to send and receive email for a domain. If you install the doc files, it should be in /usr/share/docs somewhere. If you install webmin, you probably just need to change a few things to get things running instead of mucking around in various /etc/postfix/ stuffs.
  3. Banjo, Mandrake 9.1 is a bit long in the tooth isn't it as far as compatibility is concerned. I will not be surprised if the kernel in 9.1 doesn't support that particular model of USB chipset. Anyway, if I read this link correctly, it seems that this particular casing uses a chipset that is quite problematic in Linux. You may need to upgrade the firmware or something. http://missig.org/julian/blog/2004/06/10/p...irewire-device/
  4. I don't really like using KPPP for things like this. KPPP just doesn't have the options that may be needed for GPRS connections. Install wvdial instead. Even though it's text based, its rate of success is a heck a lot better than KPPP. Here are some links to help you setup your internet connection using wvdial http://www.quinapalus.com/t300.html http://www.pcquest.com/content/linux/2004/104050807.asp What those sites doesn't say is how to quit wvdial. Just use ctrl-C Good luck
  5. If you mean that manufacturer having no Microsoft products installed in their product line at all.. there are none, especially in the United States. Move out of the US and into Asia, however, there are some manufacturers that offers Linux in some product lines. Acer is one, HP is another. I particularly like the lower end Acer products since the same laptop with Windows XP installed can cost you 100 dollars more. While 100 dollars is not that much in the Western world, it's almost a month's salary for regular people in some parts of Asia. And no.. I am not biased toward Acer because my uncle is an Acer distributor :) If I have an unlimited budget for laptops, I will pick IBM :)
  6. I have a feeling it may be the Nvidia driver. Have you tried using the old nv driver?
  7. Cool.. Ok.. since I am still downloading the iso right now (one accident with the resume function basically have me downloading back from 0 again, grmbl grmbl), I cannot try it yet. Tonight, the download should be finished though. After that, I will see whether 64 bit linux is as good as it is advertised. :)
  8. Since I don't have a 64 bit Mandrake yet, I cannot help you in details. But from the error, it seems to be a graphic card driver issue. Can you post your /etc/xorg.conf file?
  9. Thanks for the offer John. I think I will wait whether the 64 bit Mandrake is good enough for everyday use first before taking on your offer. I mean, the information for the 64 bit Mandrake is kind of sparse, even in this board. For all I know.. it may not boot at all :)
  10. Hmm... it depends on the phone or datacable really. If the phone or datacable is detected and compatible with Linux, then you can use data connection, even dialup via GPRS (or CDMA dialup). In fact, I am using a dialup method in Linux using CDMA cellphone right now :) Take a look at these links for more information. http://kotinetti.suomi.net/mcfrisk/linux_gprs.html http://tuxmobil.org/phones_linux.html Anyway, I have a feeling that bluetooth has more chance of being supported than data cable. Buying a linux compatible bluetooth dongle for your computer shouldn't hurt.
  11. Yeah.. the problem is that local el-cheapo distributor doesn't have 2005LE x86_64 version yet. It has the regular i586 3 disk download edition though. While $60 is not much if you are living in the Western world, it's basically 2 weeks salary for a professional worker here in Indonesia. When I am thinking twice about 6 dollars shipping and handling for a product that costs 10 dollars, I sure don't want to bear a 60 dollar charge. Anyway, I am downloading the 1 disk iso for now. If it has everyting I need (kernel, kde, gftp, and wvdial), I think I am going to install it and pull the rest via internet, just like usual. Anyway, cybrjackle, I tried FC3 x86_64 edition before. While it is a fine distro, there are too many quirks with it that makes me go back to Mandrake. Like I have to be root to use my cellphone dialup and I cannot find a good x86_64 FC repository for things like codecs and drivers. I think I'll wait until FC4 is fine and ready in final and available in my local el-cheapo linux distributor :)
  12. If that site ships to Indonesia for reasonable charge, then I will consider it. However, I somewhat doubt it. Even cheapbytes doesn't ship to Indonesia.
  13. Ok, now that I am back from almost a month of going to a place where Internet is barely avalable.. I found out many interesting things happened. One is that patches and updates for 10.1 is almost 200 MB. Two is that 2005LE download edition is now available. Anyway, since I don't have the bandwidth nor the patience to download the regular i586 isos, I will probably buy it from my local linux shop. However, since I have an Athlon 64 computer, I am dying to try x86_64 version of 2005LE. When I look at the mirrors, I see only one iso for x86_64 compared to the three for regular i586. Is this right? Is the Iso the full version or the network install version? If it is the full version, what is included in the iso? Thanks for any information you can give me.
  14. I was given this book (first edition I think) by someone from the United States for me to read. It is a very worthwhile read, but definitely not for beginners. The hacking scenarios at the end contains great examples of how a computer can be hacked (mostly through human errors) and what did the administrators do to detect it and fix it. The hacking scenarios basically tells me that computer security is basically about trust, who and what do you trust and paranoia is a good thing in computer security.
  15. You know, I just have a thought. Maybe the problem is not in your machine, but your ISP's machine. You see, some ISP have automatic web proxying (I know one ISP in my country does). Since Shield's up is web based, it may scan your ISP's proxy server instead of your own computer. After that few days, maybe the ISP found the vulnerability and then fixed it. Anyway, as far as I know, Windows 98 SE doesn't have a telnet server. I mean, have you tried telnetting into a Windows 98 SE machine through port 23? (like telnet 127.0.0.1). If it doesn't work, then you shouldn't be worried.
  16. There was a discussion about this somewhere (either slashdot or Linux Today). There is a theory that Munich wants to keep everything in-house. If you look at the companies that is doing the migration, they are all German company, one is even located in Munich. Now that Novell owns Suse, I guess Munich is afraid of going to the US when needing support. Debian is the most nation-agnostic of all the Linux distro I think.
  17. Go to Mandrake Control Center -> Security -> Permissions. Then Add a rule regarding that directory to change the owner, group, and also permissions for that directory.
  18. There was a thread similar to this a few days back. It is solved by selecting one of the alternate driver (i810-audio I think). Try it, maybe it works.
  19. From the ttySL0 part, I guess it's a SmartLink modem. Anyway, where did you get the driver? You may need to get the version found in http://www.smlink.com . I found out that some version of the driver doesn't like kernel 2.6 that much.
  20. I think it's because 2005 was just released. The people here needs to play around with it for a couple of days first before finding out the quirks and stuffs.
  21. You need to be careful. Not all 350 Watt PSU are made the same. You need at least a PURE POWER 350 Watt for a configuration like this. In fact, for a P4+6600 GT I think 350 Watt is on the low side. Get at least a 400 Watt Pure Power PSU for this and you'll be happy. If it 's not a pure power version, you'll need at least 450 Watt. Better get a high quality PSU anyway since a bad PSU will destroy your computer. Also, I think a 6600 GT requires an additional 4 pin power plug from the PSU. So make sure that the PSU have two 4 pin power plugs, one for the Motherboard and one for the video card. For good PSU brands, I suggest Antec, Fortron, Sparkle Power, ThermalTake, and Enlight.
  22. While I don't need to get update CDs, I still think it is a good idea. In fact, that's what I usually do, I mirrored an ftp update, burn it to a cdrw, then carry it always with me to update the computers in my office and other people I installed Mandrake in.
  23. Hah... admit it.. you are the Mandrakesoft's unofficial PR person in this board.. Anyway, congrats for your 1000th post.

The simplest thing is to add this symlink manually into your /etc/rc.local file. So add a line like this into your /etc/rc.local ln -s /dev/<modem device> /dev/modem Then after each reboot, the symlink will be made automatically. Good luck
  25. I think even though PCLinuxOS is derived from Mandrake, it is created specifically to be English only. I remember when I select another language other than English during Mandrake installation, it doesn't just install the KDE encoding for that language, but also UTF-8 capable bash shell. Maybe it's this shell that you need.
