  1. Artic, thanks but I tried the clean option, no joy. The packages option looks good but I want to do all of them so is there a global switch? PMPatrick: Yes it's an onboard intel jobbie Dell Dimension PC. If I do a clean install on my spare drive everything works great, perhaps the best distribution to date. My problem is my 'upgraded' working drive. I would like to 'downgrade' one release and the 'upgrade again' because it did work fine as I don't want to 'install' then rebuild the / directories. Thanks guys
  2. 2010 Free Gnome. 1) Upgraded from 2009 > 2009.1 last summer from MCC upgrade request lost sound. 2) Upgraded from 2009.1 > 2010 last week and it worked great and regained sound! 3) Accepted updates from MDV(MCC) and plf then lost sound and mplayer usage. Arghh!! 4) Thought I'd remove Pulse Audio and lost everything else in the process, pc defaulted to LXDE. 5) Removed all media and tried 'upgrade' again and now have gnome back but no sound nor multimedia functions. Can I get upgrade to purge/install all the files afresh without skipping over the existing installed files, so that I could get back to the condition I enjoyed (briefly) in item 2. When I used 2010 upgrade the first time, I installed every program afresh and took 30mins, now it checks 'installed' programs and accepts them and skips the install and take 15secs. This is driving me nuts!!! Any ideas welcome. Thanks
  3. Mes chers amis, Disaster! I did the 'force' thingy and nothing changed at all. So...... I then unilaterally decided to urpme kde completey and reinstall! The install went well and without incident but..... Now I have a login Menu which is visually corrupt and despite my user/login will not log me in... screen just goes black for 5 seconds and then returns to the errant screen. Logged into the 'failsafe' method and then 'startx' but just says cannot find x server, also tried to 'startkde' but obviously with no x no kde either!!! Zoot alors!!!! David
  4. Gowator, Thanks for the clarification. My problem started when I removed LDAP from mcc in the first place. Should I now remove all of KDE... How? and then pickup from Arctic's previous post? Grateful for your interest. David
  5. Artic, Did as you suggested but no result to report. Same error message about older dependecies on kdebase etc. I pressed Y to overide the error but yet again it did not install although it did install the multimedia etc. Sorry but I'm at sea on this!!! Regards David
  6. Artic, Thanks for sticking with this. I've done as you suggested. No luck with startkde etc When in the ICEwm I can load apps like Kmail Kontact but not Kontrol nor Konqueror, alas. Before I do the urpmi --clean etc. I thought I'd better refer back to you just in case you needed to know this! Regards David Quite interesting. Either, the desktop is still there or the packages are stored in the cache and aren't used somehow. Please do the following first: We have to be sure that KDE really got uninstalled (As I see it, we haven't verified that yet). When the system boots up, please press CTRL+ALT+F1 in order to drop to the command line. Log in as root user and launch startx or startkde (in case starx launches IceWM) Alternatively you can try to start KDE apps like Konqueror or Kcontrol from IceWM. If KDE or the apps load, then we only have a configuration error that we have to fix. That would also explain why urpmi does not install the packages (because they are already in place). If If it does not start, then you should launch urpmi --clean urpmi kdebase kdeutils kdeaddons kdeaccessibility kdegames kdegraphics kdebase-kdm-config-file kdebase-kdm kdemultimedia the "--clean" command will clean the cache, so urpmi will download a fresh set of packages that will work well together.
  7. Gentlemen, Thankyou all so far. I've carried on with Artic's suggestions and now have the following to report. This time I pressed yes after the urpmi kde.... etc. It than said the usual about older dependencies required ...... Still continue y/n. I answered yes and then.. It said 'all packages already loaded' and did absolutlely nothing. I can see most of my stuff but I do have some items in the / and various etc items and many that I've probably forgotten about as this install was Perfect until my ldap unistall. Bummer! I'm very careful before I press buttons and when I removed my ldapxxx there was no addtional warning to be seen. all my /home directories are intact. I would love to just reinstate my desktop. any more ideas? Soon to support Mandriva with another purchase too!!! Thanks chaps David
  8. Thanks Gowator/Artic et al I've tried the suggestions and the command line came back with 'required dependencies older than already installed...... y/n. I said no until I checked what the implications of the Y would be!!! Could I get caught in Dependency Hell? I'm encouraged that you guys don't think it's too much of a problem to sort out... I'm just a little timid. Gowator...... what do you mean by RL? and what's your thought's re the Menu entry? Can you provide a little more explicit help now you've seen the above cl response, guys? Thanks again David
  9. Thanks Arctic/Mhn I will try your suggestions and feedback later today. Some of the applications ie KMail Kontat work if I invoke from the command line so all is not lost!!! I just a little scared in case I damage the system any further as so far apart from KDM/Draktoos/MCC etc. All looks to be in place. Thanks chaps. David
  10. Thanks for the suggestion. It did'nt work though. I need to know how to get the KDM working again via the command line and my cdrom as I have all the original cds. Any ideas? David
  11. I'm Mandriva 2006+PP user having used MDK for several years and now I've experienced a very disturbing occurence. Whislt not a 'boffin' I've installed/unistalled via MCC software for several years without a problem. Last week I wanted to remove my openLDAP package and used MCC in the usual way. I selected just the 1 package and then..... MCC proceeded to removoe 450mb of software. I did not stop it as I thought that MCC was just reporting incorrectly. Mandriva2006 now boots only to ICEWM and whilst I can see my data is still there (thank heavens) I do not know how to recover my KDE desktop without a complete reinstall of Mandriva. Is this necessary? I then used the install disk to see if that would kick it all back in, I did not select the INSTALL nor the format partions option. Just the UPDATE. It then just proceeded as normal and changed nothing. Still booted to ICEWM. I've tried to startkde etc and now have reached my level of incompetence! Is there any way I can recover my KDE desktop without major surgery? I dont know how to do the install without MCC. All help appreciated! David
  12. Thankyou very much DragonMage. I can't believe I missed that!!! Now much more relaxed. This may be OT but possibly, security settings related...... When I start the server Level 4 'Higher security' I cannot use the mouse. I have to go to MCC and then offer the root password etc. > hardware > mouse settings etc. Why is this? Can you offer any suggestions please? Thanks again David
  13. Thanks for your reply. I've looked at the perm.4 file but..... I don't know what I have to change or do, can you enlighten please? David
  14. Hello fellow 'mandrivas' I'm so close to sorting out my new 'server' 10.1 and set the security level to 'Higher'. I've got all my services running sweetly (for the moment) except for the following..... I want to share a directory just for a specific 'group' of users, say ABC. As root, I create the directory, ie mkdir data, chmod ie 670, and finally, chgrp ABC data. This is then shared via 'samba' and works fine, then, the msec script kicks in and resets the group settings back to xxx. This then makes the 'share' disapear to all the members of the ABC group until I manually chmod 670 data again. Okay, I can stop the msec cron hourly, daily script running but that defeats the whole idea of the using securty levels in the first place. All I want is to be able to have a 'permanent' share available to the ABC group of the data directory, this is driving me nuts!!! I've reached the level of my own incompetence and need treatment and help. HELP!!! David
  15. Hello Folks, I've installed MDK10.1 very successfully as a desktop installation. Now, I want to try and run 10.1 as a server with web/mail/kolab etc. Having installed 4 times using the 'higher level' pre set security settings (as recommended upon installation for server suitability) I can't seem to use the pop3/cyrus-imap. I just keep getting a 'connection to host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is broken' error only on pop3/imap using kontact. Is it to do with the 'security levels' I've selected? what does each level choice actually mean? Is there a matrix to illustrate the different level/options? Love the learning curve but this is perplexing the hell out of me!!! :D
