  1. I use evolution, though I'm not a huge fan. Would use thunderbird, but I like me calendars and sunbird isn't up to much at the moment :(

    Why linux?

Its worth looking on the crossover office site (based on wine) for compatibility with photoshop - off the top of my head, I think its good..but check for different versions of PS. Deck - have a look at this seems like it works ok-ish - the wiki node has more info. :)

    Why linux?

I don't know why linux. Apparently as a 'average home user' I should be confused and annoyed by it, but I just like it and have learnt loads in the last 8 Windows-free (well aside from about 8 hours or so) months :)

    Scorched3d

Sorry to bump this old topic, but Scorched Earth 3D is available as rpm, very playable indeed and reasonably 'polished' (well relatively). For those who don't know its a remake of a reeeally old DOS game (Scorched Earth..though also called 'tanks' if I remember right) - its along the same lines as the Worms series (most similar to Worms 3D). Definitely worth a look! http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/
  5. No problem...and wait until he has less to play for ;)
  6. I had the same problem with PTV streaming (though for the Forest site..even though with last seasons and recent performances, I really don't know why I bother). Basically I get round it (on Firefox) by using the mplayer plug-in [urpmi mplayerplugin as root] and then going to 'Live Commentary' then 'Audio Commentary' (and then selecting the game)...then I'd put the cr*ppy match console up. However, I noticed last game that if you select the audio from within the match console thing, it does work now (though seems to take even longer to buffer). The video clips work fine with the mplayer plugin too. Just looked at the Watford Official and it looks the same :) Hope that helps! :)
  7. Ok..thanks..feeling a little silly now! :) Feel free to delete the thread!
  8. Just went onto DShield and its reporting that my IP was registered as having attacked / attempted access on another machine..well once, two weeks ago..and the source port is registered as my bittorrent port (and the target as 59595)..could this be anything to worry about? My services are restricted as much as I can (I think) and I always enable firestarter as one of the first things I do (plus ICMP filtering) and I've followed the security howto... :( :( :(
  9. Control/Alternate/Escape will do the same :)

    incrediMail

I remember some discussion about it a while back, but certainly more recent versions aren't infested. Not that its good for security anyway...or stable..or lean. Oh and its immensely annoying..even if you're on the receiving end and haven't got html switched off (silly animated gifs and the like).

    incrediMail

Just tried it under CxOffice and it didn't seem to want to install properly, sorry :(
  12. Much the same as a few months ago

    Guild Wars

Systen->Configuration->Configure My Computer -> Software ->Uninstall I would suggest using the 'point to play' program if you're a newbie - it makes Cedega an all GUI affair and slightly easier - you should be able to find it the same place that you got Cedega from.

    incrediMail

Crossover Office may well be able to run incredimail (I presume you mean the the email client), though to be honest, you could do most (if not all) of the features in an email client with support for HTML email creation (which I presume incredimail is just a wizard for)

    Guild Wars

It can be done on Cedega - Clicky here for info and screenshots
  16. Sign it earlier, though about 6 people have done the same since
  17. 20 or so posts previously would suggest that he's just someone trying to make the switch but having a hard time with it. I am sure that nearly everyone knows that feeling. The results are very satisfying when it happens and many things are easier, but starting out on linux can be an absolute arse.
  18. The whole kaboodle is available for any club member via BT. Haven't installed it yet though, LE2005 works so well that I think I'll wait :)
  19. Sorry to tell you but the Yahoo Messenger for Linux is awful - nothing like the Windows version - does the usual chat, IM and file transfer but thats it. It also looks terrible and on Mandrake KDE doesn't dock. Kopete and Gaim do the same but are multi-protocol and look nice to boot. Mercury is probably your answer - or using Wine perhaps? I remember reading that the Kopete developers were looking at voice and video for MSN soonish.
  20. Though Mandriva is faster to install (by a mile) and rebooting is extremely rare in a session, I do find the initial booting up slower than Windows. Nothing fails to load during the booting sequence  and everything runs fine. Ironically enough, it struck me that the problems I had during the last install of Windows were exactly the sort of things that linux distros gets criticised for i.e. horrible font rendering, drivers not being recognised (REALLY annoying when you've lost the disk) and misconfiguring hardware. I guess I could live with the scanning, but the idea of having to manually pick out spyware because two spyware programs missed it puts me right off. I guess, to be fair, its a lot about the age of Windows XP, but as Longhorn is a long way off and threatening everyone with the whole Trusted Computing palaver, the choice is very much of a no-brainer. edit: Thanks for the tip re: systray
  21. Install-wise, Mandy and Ubuntu have been easier (and quicker) than Windows. I'll agree that its more difficult to configure than Windows, but the difference (for me, as a non-techie type) is being able to configure without going for dodgy 3rd party applications. Change the taskbar? Change window decorations? You rarely see a desktop that is exactly the same with KDE/GNOME, but look at 'desktop' thread on a non-linux site and 90% of the time, people haven't dared to bother changing anything aside from their wallpaper. It would be nice if Easy Urpmi had a really simple configuration client for Mandy (so noobs could just choose 'the nearest mirror') but thats just a matter of time I guess..and as the Windows equivalent only lets you download updates for MS software... Other people have said this but XP is not 'eye-catching' - the only thing I miss is the option to 'hide' the system tray icons easily (though thats probably because people have too many!). Windows decorations are horrible (kinda lumpy with big ugly buttons), Start button is ugly (and difficult to change), clock looks 80's, Menu's take up too much screen estate (first thing I used to change) and the 'grid' which the icons can be set to is way too near the border etc. Change screen resolutions? How is that more difficult? In Mandy: Config Computer-> Hardware-> Change Screen Res. In Windows (off the top of my head): Control Panel->Display->Appearance(?). Can't say I use XMMS (I like the jukeboxes on Amarok and Rhythmbox), but Firefox has been beautifully stable for me whether using the mandrake versions or the Moz binaries . I used to be able to crash IE at least once a session, but Firefox is boring - I can count the number of times its buggered up on me on two hands in 5-6 months. Don't get me wrong, Mandy has made me foam-at-the-mouth mad loads of times (enough to try MS again), but Windows irritates me from the first second and just gets worse. I may miss some of the great applications on Windows, but its that or straight-jacketed, defragging, virus-scanning, spyware-scanning, randomly-crashing hell for me. *nods to all the helpful people on here*
  22. Where? There is a free trial for IPB 2+, but its a limited trial (very limited) on the invision site, but if you know where you can get full IPB 2+ for free (legally) then I'll be there! Bugger support!
  23. I use Invision Board 1.3 - the one which was free as evaluation*. There are still loads of hacks available for it and I still prefer it to the newest version of phpBB - in terms of aesthetics, usablility and admin functions, its way better. IPB 2+ is even better, though will cost you $70 (well there is an early evaluation version of 2.0 somewhere, but its buggy). VBulletin is even nicer still, but even more expensive and you can't get a 'free support/upgrades for a year, licenced forever' type deal like you can with IPB. Also worth looking at Simple Machines and Ikonboard (from which IPB came). *Of course, its not right to use the evaluation version unless you downloaded it when it was still licenced as such ;) edit: Just checked - there is an equivalent for VBulletin, but it costs $160
