  1. Hi, I have just returned to mandriva (version 2006 now) after a flirt with vector and have a question regarding wireless. I have my connection going fine, but cant seem to find an easy way to set up a second wireless profile. It only seems posiible in mcc to assign one setup to ra0 meaning i have to change it when go go from work to home etc. Am I missing something obvious? (...probably knowing me!) cheers. chris
  2. yes i opened 6881 on udp and tcp  and also selected the "bittorrent" option. The orig bittorrent client works ok, so dont think it will be a ports problem. cheers. Chris
  3. I have tried setting speeds down to 5kb'sec (up and down) on my 1mbit (256k up) connection and still same prob :(
  4. Am not in front of the PC in question at the moment, but if that is on the "transfers" page in options, then I have already limited it. Is there somewhere else I should be looking aswell? cheers. Chris
  5. Hi Group, Spent yesterday playing about with bittorrent clients and got bittorrent working ok, but no joy with azereus. I seem to have a problem that many others have, but have not come acroos a working solution. When Azureus is launched it seems to almost "kill" the internet connection. I cannot browse, check email etc and Gaim cuts out. This is even before I attempt to download anything (which does actually work ok!). All the NAT stuff is working fine, and I have set up the port forwarding on my router. I have tried limiting the number of connections (really low)/connection speeds as suggested in other posts elsewhere, but it still seems to block out the net connection. When i close azureus, all works fine again. I noticed someone else mention this and say they have left azereus, but was wondering if anyone else has managed to solve this problem? Cheers. Chris
  6. Ati have released new drivers which supposedly fix a niggle I have (cursor sometimes appearing on both my screens). Do you have to uninstall the old drivers first? and if so, how? or shall I just run the installer like last time in the hope it will just overwrite the old files? The ATi guide only seems to cover fresh installs. cheers!

    Why linux?

My student freebie of winows XP had a line in the licence saying it could not be used for commercial purposes. Now I am no longer a student and I do a lot of web design work, I had to change really. Personally, I think the tools available for linux for web design are better than those available for windows.....and free! (only my opinion). I can now create graphics with tools such as The Gimp and Inkscape without the cost of buying Fireworks or Photoshop Bluefish seems pretty neat as an Html editor (going to try Quanta next). gftp is slick. I can run Apache with PHP and test all my stuff locally (possibly could have done that with xp - but never looked into it). I have been an openoffice user on windows for well over a year.....and it seems to work twice as quick on linux :D The only thing I really honestly miss from windows is fottball manager 2005 (game). But I have not yet tried playing it with cedega or wine. Has anyone else?
  8. Just wondering if anyone else had come acroos this article: http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/index.php?p=412 "The openSUSE project is the only Linux distribution to go all the way to end user packaging, complete with documentation and end user support. You can pay a nominal fee at a store, with books, media and support you can install yourself. That doesn’t exist with other projects." pretty sure mandrake has been doing this for years?? (sorry if this has already been posted - just jumped right in  )
  9. I didn't use the text installer, "linux noapic" still loads the gui installer.
  10. to get the install to work with my SATA drive on the infamous VT8237 the "linux noapic" command fixed me. My installation was stopping at same point. But if you are then losing mouse/keyboard because of this setting, then am a bit stumped.
  11. sorry. right, I take it you have downloaded the ATi installer? When you log into your system, are you getting a command prompt after X fails to load? If so, log in as "root" with the "root password". CD to the directory where the ATi install was downloaded to (possibly /home/MY Downloads). type "chmod 777 ati-x" (replace ati-x with full file name). then type "./ati-x" (again replace ati-x with full file name). This should launch the ati installer in text mode. Proceed with the installation and select the "recomended setup" not the advanced one. after the install finishes, it tells you to run fglrxconfig (or similar). Do that by typing the command. Once you have finished following those instructions and are back at the command prompt. Type "rebbot". Fingers crossed X will boot this time. Chris
  12. login as root, init 3, chmod 777 ati-xxxxx, ./ati-xxxxxx, install recomended setup, fglrx_config (maybe fglrxconfig), reboot (proper reboot),
  13. Cheers, will give it a try this evening. BTW, cheers for King - instant Hornet legend!
  14. Hi, Not booted into XP for nearly a month now But ran in to a bit of a problem last friday. I wanted to listen to my beloved WatfordFC (www.watfordfc.com) radio coverage which used to play through IE6/windows media player combo, but this does not seem to work "out of the box" with firefox on mandy 10.2. I have noticed that mp3's play through firefox without launching a separate player window, so was hoping maybe the audio streaming of premiumtv sites (football league sites - many of) may just work, but it doesn't. Does anyone know how to get it working? I'm guessing its a case of correctly setting up some player/codec combo, but am not too sure which and how. I have successfully set up real player, and tested it with streaming audio from bbc.co.uk - but I don't think the premiumTV sites support real player (all their help stuff is related to windows/media player) Many Thanks for any pointers. Chris B
