  1. It may be listed under kde-multimedia-k3b or something like that. Check all the kde multimedia listings. Sorry I'm not using Mandrake right now so I'm not sure what it will be...
  2. Does 1024x768 work in Windows? If it doesn't, it's just your monitor. However, if it does, you'll have to edit your xorg.conf. There's a few ways to do this. If you know your monitor's horizontal and vertical sync rate (should be found on your monitor manufacturer's site), you can input that in the file, which may fix it. The other thing you can try is editing your xorg.conf to include that resolution at the right color depth (probably 24).
  3. Hmm... that's strange. I've always gotten k3b in my installations, though I believe I had to select the group "Multimedia." I always do bare installs anyway though. Just do "urpmi k3b" or a search in the installation section of the MCC. Also note that in order to actually burn CDs with k3b, you'll need a few extra packages, but I believe it will warn you about that before you start burning. Try bare installs- that way you'll know your system's pristine.
  4. Maybe with the X updates it rendered your precompiled drivers bad (I know it does that with kernel updates), dunno. Try ./nvidia-installer --uninstall and then re-run it.
  5. I wish I could help you, but I don't speak German :). Could you translate please?
  6. Where did you download it from? If you download from the mandriva site, I know it should work, as I've done that and had them work fine.
  7. Do you know how to setup dmix? Last time I used LE 2005, it didn't work that way by default for some reason, but regardless I'm using Debian. I'll bet the way to configure it is mostly the same.
  8. Hey, I've been experimenting with the various lightweight WM's and so far, I'm most impressed with XFCE. Anyway, how can I mix the sound so that I can play amaroK or XMMS at the same time as Firefox playing a flash movie and still get sound? On KDE I can do "artsdsp [command]" but that doesn't seem to work. Is there another sound wrapper I could use, maybe? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  9. Or sh [filename]. Sometimes you need to do that.
  10. See what happens if you reburn the CDs at the lowest speed possible. Bad burns sometimes happen, and it's happened to me before.

    Cds to mp3

And if you use KDE, there's always kaudiocreator, or (in the newest versions if you have kio-plugins installed), just type audiocd:/ in a konqueror window and it will auto-mount and look up with the CDDB.
  12. Go into your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see what mouse type it's set at. It works great for me at ImPS/2 and it works great, you might try that. What kind of mouse do you have? Does it work in Windows?

    firewall

The bastille firewall also needs some knowledge and I haven't used it too much but it seems decent.
  14. That was kinda my experience. I liked how it was pretty lightweight and was "main program is limited and to extend it you need plugins" Firefox-type philosophy rather than Openoffice which does include every feature I'll ever need but is very bulky. If they get document formmating working better, I'll probably start using it.
  15. I'd suggest a listing of some distros and their capabilities with some suggestions as to advantages of each. Probably for new people it would be Mandrake, SuSe, and FC4. I've wanted to make something like this for a while, "A Beginner's Guide to Open Source."
  16. Anyone using AbiWord for word processing? I almost did switch (from OO 2.0 Beta), but its saving as other formats capability seemed kinda of weak compared to OO.o, then again, I was using 2.2.7. Anyone know if it's better in 2.2.9 or anyone using it? :P
  17. To reset the connection, run as root: /etc/init.d/network(or networking) restart. You can then put that into a script, which should work as long as it's run as root, to automate it.
  18. I guess it doesn't automatically assume you're using the arts wrapper, though I also can't figure out why. I've had to do that with both Mandriva and Debian, so, dunno... Anyone know about this?
  19. No clue, however for setting her connection each time, you could just put a script in /etc./init.d and then one in /etc/rcS.d (starting AFTER the connection is supposedly setup, but making sure to /etc/init.d/networking restart at the end of the script), and it should startup at each boot. Kind of a workaround, but it should work (around)...
  20. Dunno much about laptops, but for desktops, Debian pure is great.
  21. Maybe install SDL just in case, though I think Bioware bundled it so it should work ok... Also try with the "artsdsp [nwn path]"
  22. That would explain it :). I'll just buy Logitech, thank you.
  23. You can try by installing only the bare essentials with "gnome-desktop" or whatnot, and then install more as you need it.
  24. I'd second Debian. You can install just the basics need for a command-line and then everything up from there, which, even though I'm using KDE and a GUI and all that I did so I could avoid unnecessary packages.
