  1. well in fact all i wanted to do is hiding my PTR record which i got by my isp... but i faced now that its not possible if my isp does not change it for me.. but no problem all is cleared up now, read alot of stuff about dns :)
  2. Well latly i have to face alot of system freezes and abnormal abortions... and i noticed that mandriva asks u at boot up if u wanna check the discs (if u didn not shuted ure pc down correctly)...u have 5 seconds do say yes and i just wondered what in fact does this check do... i mean i didnt done that check every time when i have killed my system or didnt shutted it down correctly... so is it bad if i forgot that sometimes... and what does it help me if i done... also i wonder how that system works.. i mean i checked my boot-log... and the parts where bootup is checking the discs made me a bit confused... those part where i didnt done the repair, it says sumthing like this "fsck: /dev/hda2: clean, 89183/1913184 files, 369866/3823462 blocks" and at parts where i did the repair it looks like this -> "Oct 7 04:59:25 fsck: /dev/hda7: recovering journal Oct 7 04:59:27 fsck: ^A/dev/hda3: | Oct 7 04:59:27 fsck: ^B" so i askd myself what in fact is the difference if i do repair or if i do it not... for me it seems that if i dont select to repair the systems it auto--assumes that the system is clan without even checking it... and if i do the repair then it really checks it... but im not sure... so plz help me with clearing this up... also how can i check my hard-disk if i forget to push yes at the 1st 5 seconds... im a lil paranoid now if i may lost data and how the recover system works and what i can do !! thx for any help! 3. well ... here i am again... im not able to get it working.. my router has dns enabled with wildcard support and stays in contact with dyndns.org... since my free dns hostname is example.kicks-ass.net i setted my linux box to this hostname... also the pc name... (dhcp & pc name).. so my /etc/hosts was like this -> 127.0.0.1 example.kicks-ass.net localhost 192.168.0.5 test.example.kicks-ass.net the 192. is the internal ip of my linux box recieved from the dhcp server in my router... and so i thought i give it the faked hostname.... in the network-interface options i ticked the box which says "automatically get dhcp hostname from router" (dunno if this is good or not) so with the setup like this it doesn work... still my generic hostname is shown shown @ irc... any ideas ?! plz help me ! im stuck !!
  4. allrite.. now i understand what they mean with wildcard.. nice ! very nice ! thx alot for your help ! my day is made .. :D
  5. THHHHX!!!!!!! this is in fact what im looking for... now a part of my question is answered... i need to set up virtual hosts, not iden-fakers on port 113... thats pretty good to know since there are alot of tutorials which tells u howto set up virtual hosts @ linux.. but there is one part that makes me feel bad... What happens is that people buy the domain names (ex.am and anymore.net) and then add the "fun" parts of the name in. So flunked.my.final.ex.am actually resolves to a computer out there. so this is only possible if i buy a top level domain ?! or does it also work with my dyndns.org hostname ... i have opend an account there and gave my ip a dns hostname ... but it isnt a top level domain... i mean virtual hosts stuff... do i need to buy a full domain name or does it also works with my free dns hostname by dyndns.org...
  6. i hope u all not to confused by that much dns and hostnames stuff ..... i mean the 'generic' hostname u get by your ISP.. this is what i wanna hide with my bouncer... better saied i wanna fake it... like when u do mode +x on IRC... and i heared u can do that with linux.. dunno maybe with ident-fake (port 113) or vHosts..
  7. hey.. thx for ya replie but i think thats not exactly what im looking for... im searching for a way to set up my linux box so, that the irc-bouncer hides the hostname while connect to irc... instead of 123123asdasd.user.vie.chello.at for example (reverse dns of ip) i want sumthing like -> i.am.so.cool.org .... a faked hostname that hides the original of the isp... so that i am anonym when i connect through my bouncer... u see hostnames when u do /whois in irc.. im not sure if i have to use vhosts or ident fake and what to set up...
  8. Hi there !! Plz help me !! well i wasted the last 24 hours finding a solution for following plan: ok i have a router and 2 pcs... 1 with linux (server) and 1 windows workstation... the router is blocking all ports but 80 (web) 8767 (teamspeak) 27015-27020 (css server) and 6667 (irc bnc)... all those ports get forwared to my linux server (192.168.0.*)... on this linux box i have anabled the same ports in the shorewall firewall + the mail outgoing port (postfix)... i dont have a valid top level domain.. i have a ip 84.113.*.* and a dns/hostname forwarding to this ip -> ston3d.kicks-ass.net ... the router has this ip and gives to my 2 pcs just lan ips ok rite now i dont have given a hostname/dhcp server name to my linux box... in the /etc/hosts is just -> 127.0.0.1 localhost ... so what i wanna do now is spoof/mask/hide/fake my ip/hostname or at least just the hostname... and i talk about the ISP hostname... like when u connect to irc it looks like -> user@user.provider.domain ... now i want to fake this ... i mean my bouncer can use vhosts and how do it do that now... i want to hide my isp hostname and use instead virtual hostnames which are in fact faked... like -> this.is.so.cool.org .. u could also say i want to disable reverse dns lookups or give out fake stuff.. so what do i have to put as hostname @ my linux box and what do i have to enter into /etc/hosts ... and what do i haev to enter as dhcp-server-name... or how do i fake my hostname for irc with vhosts and a bouncer... or maybe has it dod with IDENT ? i hope u understand what i mean !! thx alot for any help!
  9. well i installed my le2005 box with german language and ticked at the install wizard the option "unicode by default" ... well i have a apache1 server installed and special characters like öäü etc cannot be displayed anf get replaced by symbols.... so how can i make them working and switch from unicdoe to sumthing idfferent... i want support for special characters everywhere on my system and all serevr... plz help ! thx!
  10. welll whatever it was since i pushed "ignore" its gone lol...
  11. hey thx for all ya replies i solved it... it was a dns problem... since im using a static dns and no dynamic, there is no need to enter a dns into the router settings... since the dns is pointing to the ip anywayz and the router does not need to update the ip to the dns... so i simpyl disabled it and now there are no mroe timeouts... i guess packages always got lost while the router tried to update the ip to dyndns.org or so.... peace ;)
  12. my windows xp workstation does not get timeouts.. (Same network)... but latly... since a few days it happens that my router freezes... im nearly sure it ash sumthign todo with my router... with freezing i mean 1 or more local pcs do not get any more packets from the router and have timeouts until the router gets rebooted... the linux amchine never had total loss of connection... just some more shorter timeouts... strange stuff... and yes i have a dyndns... but a static just for a nice dns name instead of the ip and my router is Netgear RP614 v3... i ahev port-forwarding but port trigegring disabled... i ahev activated the dns servicewith wildcard enabled.. and my router has a static ip too..... i mean my isp gave me a static ip ... no dynamic... anyone have suggestions what i can try ?! and whats MRU ? i have spi acivated and MTU 1500 bytes thx
  13. HiHo... I have a mandriva 2005 LE Linux Box with apache, mysql, php teamspeak2 and counterstrike source server...
