  1. It appears that the error message is itself an error - indeed. The Drak Control Center partition page does not show the green swap partition I created long ago. But when I click on the logical volume, the green swap space appears there in the size I created. Also, swapoff and swapon works correctly from the root console window. So the boot message is indeed an error! Thanks for the discussion. I feel better now.
  2. I recently upgraded from Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition to Mandriva 2007. On booting Mandriva 2007 I get the error message enabling swap failed - device or resource busy. I found an older discussion on this swap problem that seems to indicate that it is really not a problem, but has something to do with logical volumes. If this is really true, the error message should be deleted from the boot process since it scares users. I have been using Linux systems since Slackware 0.97 and have never had a swap problem until now. Mandriva 2005 used logical volumes also and didn't have the problem. I did the suggestions in that discussion with the following results: [dfgrbac@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/fstab # /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00, size=119013376, type=: (VolGroup00) /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 # /dev/hda5, size=208782, type=131: Journalised FS: ext3 (extended) /dev/hda5 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 # /dev/VolGroup00/2, size=1572864, type=: (VolGroup00) /dev/VolGroup00/2 /mnt/VolGroup00/2 ext2 user,exec,rw,noauto 1 2 # fd: H1440 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto user,exec,rw,noauto 0 0 # /dev/hda1, size=9858177, type=11: FAT32 (primary) /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat user,exec,rw,noauto,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 # /dev/hda2, size=93337650, type=7: NTFS (primary) /dev/hda2 /mnt/win_d ntfs user,exec,ro,noauto,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0 # /dev/hda3, size=8385930, type=12: Win98 FAT32, LBA-mapped (primary) /dev/hda3 /mnt/win_e vfat user,exec,rw,noauto,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/zipext ext2 defaults 0 0 /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfat defaults 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0 # /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01, size=2031616, type=: (VolGroup00) /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0 [dfgrbac@localhost ~]$ Swap is listed there. Does this mean it is working okay and I should ignore the error?
  3. Thanks for the suggestion and reply. I tried the control center before to try and mount the zip drive resulting in the same error. However, I didn't try creating the mount point since I didn't think it should be necessary - it wasn't in edition 2005. I created /mnt/zip and was able to mount the zip disk using the control center. However, I consider this to be a step backwards. Systems are "supposed to improve" with each upgrade. Is the problem that nobody is using ZIP drives anymore? There has to be a lot of us out here doing that. At any rate, thanks again!
  4. Being a happy Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition user, I recently installed Mandriva 2007. In the 2005 edition, my USB ZIP drive was mounted automatically just by inserting a disk - nice and easy. But in the 2007 edition, I get the following error: Method "mount" with signature "ssas"on interface "org.Freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" doesn't exist. Can anyone provide the solution to this?
  5. Thanks! Installing gnome-control-center worked for setting the default emailer. That being the case, maybe gnome should be the only WM on Mandriva. Or KDE should work as well. I have another problem post out there about adding a printer driver from a manufacturer which fails. I think I will try the gnome-control-center on that also. Thanks again, Don
  6. Yeah, I did that several times even before posting the problem. It didn't help.
  7. :o I've got LE 2005 installed along with Firefox and Thunderbird. When I am in Thunderbird email and click on a web link, Firefox starts fine. When I am in Firefox and click on an email link, it does nothing! FYI, I am using a version of Firefox that I downloaded from their site in tgz format. I am not using the rpm for Firefox. The Thunderbird is the rpm from the Mandriva site. How do I get Thunderbird email to be triggered by Firefox links? Ps. I have done this setup before with other Linux distributions and had no problem.
  8. I just successfully installed Mandriva LE 2005 after solving a problem with the installation CDs. Now my problem is the printer driver. My printer, an Epson CX5400 3 in 1 page image printer, was recognized and configured automatically very nicely. The problem is that it is printing in line mode rather than page image mode which is 3 times faster. Epson provides linux drivers at their Avasys Download Service for Linux [www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/index.html]. They have a specific driver (rpm) for Mandriva which I downloaded and installed. I tried to activate this new driver with the Mandrakelinux Control Center. The driver is called an scx5300_5400s driver which seems to appear in the list of Epson drivers, but when selected the test print does not work nor does it print if configured. If I press the "use manufacturer's driver" button, it says the ppd does not conform to ppd format. The new driver can also be selected with the KDE Control Center which interfaces to the root configuration (it asks for the root password). This KDE interface has the new driver in its list and identifies it as a page image driver. I even successfully printed a test page and it printed in page image mode. The only difference was that the color wheel and radial lines were not perfectly round as they are in the recommended driver. But I could not activate this driver permanently. The KDE interface got a couple of error dialogs saying the configuration procedure failed. The only way I can get the printer to work reliably is to use the default recommended driver which prints in line mode. Another strange thing is that when something prints, the active light on the printer goes on - and never goes off as it should when the print is done. In my old SuSE system, the printer worked normally with the downloaded driver in page mode nicely. Can anyone help me use the new driver?
  9. Yes, my DVD drive is the first referenced. But if there is no disk in it, why should that matter? Anyway, I get your point. Computers are not as refined as we would like to think. We are still primative in so many ways - not just computing. Also, changing disks was not a problem. I couldn't get past the first disk install procedures. The worst part of this was that it worked through the format partitions procedure and then died. This made the computer unusable until another linux was installed. I have two other linux distributions and they both work in the CD drive. Therefore I didn't expect that was the problem. Don
  10. Problem solved! But you're not going to believe the solution. I downloaded another copy of the iso from a different site, but the file compared exactly with the original iso I got. - using diff. I burned it to a CD anyway, and got the same error again. Now here is the solution - which really is not a solution when you come right down to it. Instead of reading the install CD in the CD-RW drive, I placed it in the DVD drive just out of frustration. This worked! I'd sure like to know why though. The only thing I can conceive of is that the DVD drive has a finer resolution and read the disk correctly where the CD drive could not - even though the Cd drive actually wrote the disk. Go figure! Anyway, I am sending this message from Mandriva - Praise God! Don
  11. Tried it - same error. I am thinking the iso file has a glitch.
  12. I downloaded the 3 CD iso images for Mandriva LE 2005 and burned them on CD. When I reboot the computer with the first CD, it starts okay. Everything goes fine until it is time to reformat the disk and install Mandriva. Then it abruptly gets a fatal error saying: /mnt/boot no such file or directory. I tried this several times using the default partitioning and even playing with the partitions a little sometimes formatting the /boot partition and sometimes not. I keep getting the same error. I did not really want to change the partition setup since I already have a linux installed. I just wanted to delete that linux and install Mandriva. I am not a newby to linux - been using it for over a decade. Although I am a retired computer analyst and Unix system admin, It's been over 10 years and I know I am losing some of my touch. Can anyone give me an idea how to get around this install error? Don
