  1. Thats it thats all. On my server I installed SSH, started it and in webmin I changed the port to something other then the standard one. Then opened and forwared that port back on the firewall and am happily wandering around on the server from work. You may not be used to it working that easily but that's definatly how easy it should be.
  2. I'm using no-ip.com on a server behind a firewall. The catch is that amongst other things it's a NAT box so it works IP or on name.
  3. DOlson go kick the server man. I get The page cannot be displayed when I try to access it. :-)
  4. Did you do urpmi mplayer? Head over to here for a nice easy to understand tutroial on urpmi http://speculation.org/garrick/urpmifaq.txt Not to mention several other linux questons/problems.
  5. Got it figured out. It was the ##*@&^#$*^@#*$^@*#$ default server config overriding what I wanted it to be. Next project web server, then email server here I come.
  6. Shouldn't be. I used to do it direct connected also, now Im behind a linux firewall and didn't have to make any changes to the firewall at all.
  7. Set up an account with one of the dynaminc IP companies, I use no-ip.com, create your hosts. Download the correct software to you computer and run the install, answering the questions that you are asked. And you're off to the races. Or at least it was that easy for me to set up no-ip.com
  8. HURRRY! HURRRY! HARD!!!!!!! Think about it guys. Nothing better then women in skirts with sticks yelling at the top of thier lungs to hurry and hurry hard.
  9. Ok I'm stumped. I've been running pure-ftpd teaching myself how to set up a ftp server in linux, next project is a web server then a mail server. :) But as a whim I'd give proftpd a shot. I installed proftpd and webmin and followed Afrosheens excellent tutorial on setting it up. It worked like a charm except for one thing, I can't get the users chroot'd to the directory I want to lock them into. They can cd into any directory they choose to which as you can imagine isn't a good thing, they can't do anything but look but that's not the point. I checked on proftps site in the faq and the context is correct according to thier information but it sitll won't lock the users in. With the vague information I gave anyone have any suggestions on what to check? :?
  10. You can use scp to upload files. The command is scp filename username@address:filename The destination will ask for the users pass and if that's ok away goes your file. man scp for more information.
  11. That's correct. I suggest getting the md5sum file also and checking the iso image. CD's aren't expensive but it could save you the hassle of making a coaster from a bad image.
  12. Excellent.I've been looking forward to trying this one out.

    SSHD has an exploit.

Hasn't that been fixed in a version or 2 ago though?
  14. I've had pretty good success with Limewire and Lopster.
  15. Are you running the correct version?
  16. Yeah that's funny .. I'd like to hack this guys .. grrrrr MottS I assume you're not running Apache in a windows box? Cause thats the only way that would affect you. Obviously on a linux box these won't work so don't worry about it.
  17. Not bad, 4 out of 7. I had to close my eyes and guess on the last 3 though. No big surprise those were the ones I got wrong. :-)

    Update Sources

Did you do an updatedb after configuring the sources? It should't be necessary but neither should a lot of things. :-) Also what happens when you do a urpmi.update?
  19. Does it go like all good firewalls have a default deny written into it?

    ICQ and Gaim

Neither. No plugins are needed for Gaim to connect to ICQ. It installs ready to connect. MSN on the other hand needs a plugin.
  21. If you ever do find one let me know. Like you the ones I found in Fredericton are long since dead. I can't believe we're the only 2 running linux in Freddy beach. :-)

    Kernel 2.4.20

Nice to hear. Although I think I'll wait a month or so before I try to get it. I can just imagine how swamped they're going to be.
  23. Sounds more like you were having dependiencies problems and when you used urpmi it got the dependiencies.
  24. I use Irssi and Scrollz but they're both term clients. I haven't found a better X one then X-Chat. What's the problem you're having with it? Heck for that matter you can always install Wine and get a copy of mIRC to run in it.
  25. Try this url for an excellent tutorial on urpmi: http://speculation.org/garrick/urpmifaq.txt He's got it set up that if you are having trouble doing it yourself you can cut and paste what he has and you're off to the races.
