  1. That may be asking a bit much... :P I know there are a couple of gdesklets that do this kind of thing, I've never tried them so I don't know if they're really suitable. You may not want the additonal overhead of gdesklets either. I'd be surprised if there was no clever little dbus application to do this - but thats probably how mail-notification works!
  2. Having once bought a top of the line card I can tell you you'll feel pretty down when a new "better" card comes out a couple months down the line! I'd maybe buy a mid-level card, then plan on buying another mid-level card six months to a year later - rinse and repeat.

    Cedega

To be perfectly frank, for a gaming only machine & wanting to play the latest releases, I think you'd probably be better off with windows. Sad but true!
  4. Thats right - sounds like a good plan to buy another 1GB later. I'm not sure what they can mean by having an integrated FSB, the FSB connects the CPU to the RAM (and other controllers) so it should really be a combination of the CPU and motherboard. AFAIK the 64-bit AMD's have an on-die mem controller so they may be refering to this - and it's a very good thing. Generally, the quicker the FSB the better (the CPU can pull data out of RAM quicker) - just make sure that your motherboard supports the same FSB as your CPU (99% certain that it will).

    What is ZeroConf?

Do that same search and this time hit "I'm feeling lucky"...
  6. Many distros have this in the sdl_mixer-devel package. I found this out by searching for sdl_mixer.h on rpm.pbone.net
  7. You could think about buying two 512 MB sticks of RAM, it might save you a small amount (also check prices on crucial - always had good service and mem from them). Additionally some motherboards prefer pairs of RAM, I'm not sure how much real-world difference it'll make but if you're trying to squeeze very last oz of performance out of it I'd at least take a look.

    What is ZeroConf?

Apple have renamed it bonjour (for legal reasons). A quick search for apple bonjour seems to generate a lot of hits that look potentially useful.
  9. It's been mentioned on the board before, certainly seems to be a problem on nvidias side.
  10. I'd have to echo scp, it's always worked for me. If you turn on remote access on the mac it'll start the necessary services for you to connect with madriva. As I don't use KDE I'm not sure if there's scp/sftp support built into konqueror or not.
  11. If you don't have a DNS server that knows your box is called "linuxbox", then the windows clients won't be able to resolve the domainname. You could add the IP address with a hostname to the hosts file in windows - but if your IP changes you'll have to go back and change it.
  12. This is a slightly offwall suggestion, but check what security level you're using in mcc - a lower security level may help (I have no idea what the various levels do, this is not assured to work).
  13. I would assume that if it's not mentioned in httpd.conf then there's no proxy.
  14. Are you configuring the address via dhcp? Are you provided with a static IP address? This sounds a little odd, so sorry about the "silly" questions.
  15. Try switching off IPv6 in firefox - go to about:config, find the preference network.dns.disableIPv6 and set the value to true.
  16. Sounds like it could be the firewall getting in the way. You could try turning of your internet connection, switching off the firewall and then attempting the pings etc. If that doesn't help then at least we can rule out the firewall causing problems - also, what's your security setting in MCC?
  17. Go into Mandriva Control Centre, click on System, then click on Services
  18. You can open it in a text editor, kate or gedit (KDE or Gnome, respectively) may be easier than vi. If you just want to see a specific line, you could do: sed -n "lineno p" file So, for line 15 in the file foo.bar sed -n "15 p" foo.bar
  19. should that not adsl-start rather than adsl-stat? Check the script calling this to make sure. You will need a DNS server address to be able to resolve domain names etc.
  20. You can use cups to configure a samba based printer. Point your browser at localhost:631 to configure (assuming cups is installed).
  21. Install a distro that you're comfortable with, get the wireless network running (using ndiswrapper if necessary), install the package for a mail server (perhaps try exim), configure server for your needs. Of course, you may need to forward ports to this mail server, firewall it, etc. Configuring the mail server is probably the most difficult part, but you should be able to find a config on the web that matches your setup.
  22. You might be able to do something with portsentry
  23. It may be worth passing the patch upstream, to see if anyone would find it useful.
  24. I believe there's a tick box in mcc to allow ftp access throught the firewall, I know it's a stupid question but have you tried that? Otherwise, what did you set the security level to (again this can be found in mcc)?
  25. Thats very odd, are you using a mandrake packaged firefox?
