  1. Part of the problem may be the motherboard manufacturer. Shutdown has not worked for me, with every mobo but the one I have now: Chaintech 7VJL Deluxe Apogee. When I went to shut down (power off) with this one, I was expecting to have to use the power button, and, was ready. To my vast surprise, mandrake shutdown the computer. Interestingly, everything on this mobo works with Mandrake. No surprise, IF you consider that the package includes Thiz Linux 6.0. Motherboard designed with Linux in mind (what a pleasant surprise this is).
  2. Don't you all remember the infamous Halloween Papers??? These were from 1997-1998, and MS Internal documents that got leaked, from Board Meetings. In those they acknowledged to themselves that linx back then was ALREADY superior to their OS, that it was indeed a THREAT, and the only method they could come up with to try and destroy Linux OS, was the FUD campaign. This was due to the fact that Linux was not by a single Company that MSFT could so easily destroy, but, a whole bunch of very talented programmers scattered all over the planet, doing it for FUN. The only real point of attack that MSFT could find, was Stallman's political leanings, which is decidedly left of left. To Microsoft and at least SCO, the cutesy little, newly hatched Penguin, has grown up into The BIG The Very BAD ....... Tuxinator!
  3. I had no problem running 9.1 with 1 GB ram. Install automatically saw it and defaulted to the Enterprise Kernel. Since I am at the moment running win98se and 9.1 powerpack in a dualboot configuration, I had to drop to 768 MB ram to makes things smoother in 98se. Since I want to go with 4 GB in this box (the mobo supports it), i will likely upgrade my windoze to XP Pro + SP1 for my windows games. My internet and stuff is all done in Mandrake.
  4. Yeah, real Bummer. I loved the Blade3D AGP I had. I know, only an 8MB card, but my windows games had no issues with it, like they do with nvidia and ati (current at the time). However, it would not work in xfree in mandrake.
  5. Gee, I always base my hardware decisions on Mandrake Linux compatibility. This is why I decided to go with this KT400/VT8235 motherboard, rather than a KT400/Nforce2 mobo. Mandrake's stock 9.1 kernel has NO problems with the chipset nor the onboard sound and LAN. I read about the problems with Nforce2 mobos and Mandrake 9.1, so I decided it was best to steer clear of them. Turned out to be a good decision, with a pleasant surprise (or 7 or 8).

    New Hard Drive

I have been using the Master/Slave jumper settings since the old MFM days. I have never trusted cable select, even with Windows.
  7. Final update: I should have known that with its own linux distro, this Chaintech 7VJL Deluxe Apogee would be fully compatible with linux. Both onboard sound (6 channel surround) and onboard Nic work in Mandrake 9.1 with no problems. This motherboard gets a huge thumbsup for compatibility with Mandrake Linux!!!
  8. I'm baaaaaack! Interim report number one: Before I start, The Chaintech 7VJL Deluxe Apogee comes with Thiz Linux 6.0. After a couple of and I got the system to post. One must be careful to set jumpers correctly and make sure the pins are connected. I was trying to get the cpu clock set to 166 and missed a pin on the jumper, and, totally disabled the cpu clock. Of course, no post. Duh! The same problem that showed up with the Promise Ultra100 card in the Asrock system, showed up here as well. No big deal, as I was half expecting it to. Mandrake puts the Ultra100 card first and the onboard ata133 controller second, while the bios has them in the correct order. This makes for a smooth install, but NO linux boot (wrong drives and partitions). I miss my Windows games, so I decided to go back to a dualboot setup. I happen to use Partition Commander 6 and System Commander Personal Edition. This version only supports ext2 and linux swap (older version of software). It does come with a bootable rescue/partitioning diskette, so I decided to use that to do faster partitioning and formatting for win98se. I decided to check and see if it would see my entire 160 gig hdd, and it does. So I checked the manual, and found I can use this workaround to utilize drives larger than the win98 fdisk hdd size of 120 gigs. Better and better, as most of my 60 gig drives were for windows (4 drives of this size). I include this for you dual and multibooters who might read this. I am currently using my old nic and sound card for purposes of getting back online quickly. I did not get any kernel messages about an unrecognized chipset or southbridge. So I am hopeful about the onboard cmedia sound and onboard nic. Other than that, the important things are working (all 4 ddr ram slots). I'll be back later with a further report on the onboard sound and nic. Have to finish surfing tonight and shutdown, including the cable modem so it will reset properly for the onboard nic.
  9. I didn't get the cpu or ram i really want for my new chaintech mobo, but, I want to make sure everything is working before I invest that much money. I bought an Athlon XP 2500+ and 4 x 256MB DDR333 (4 slots) for testing and interim purposes. As soon as I get some things copied, I will be shutting down and tearing this one apart to do the mobo/cpu/ram swap and fresh install. I hope this solves the annoying problem that this mobo has with mandrake and promise ultra100 controller (mandrake wants ultra100 first while mobo see it second). Mobo is made by asus, though not asus brand. Some asus mobos have a problem with pci eide controllers, but I never heard of any problems with Chaintech boards and these controllers. There is even an issue in windows with this mobo and the promise controller. I will be back to report on any issues and/or successes, probably tonight or tomorrow.
  10. CloakedPenguin, you sound like me. My obsession with ram comes from my just barely being able to scrape enough money together for 5 MegaBytes of SIMMs, for my old 386DX-40 system I had. It was just barely enough to play MSDOS DOOM and jerkily at that. Those were the days when 1 MB simms cost $70 each and 4 MB ones cost $200 or so each. Now I have 4 x 256 MB DDR333 waiting to be installed in my new mobo and they cost me $30 each! My how times and prices have changed! My mobo can handle 4 GB and Linux Enterprise kernel easily handles that. Any more and a special module has to be enabled for up to 16 GB. The standard kernel only has support enabled for up to 868 MB. No such thing as too much memory. :D
  11. It would be just like the NSA to sneak in a couple of extremely clever backdoors, and call it Security Enhanced Linux. Theirs and the US Government Security Enhancement! NSA is after all in the business of Signals Intelligence, and they don't care if it violates the law (domestic). They've had backdoors in Wondoze for Years.
  12. Even a momentary outage (lights blink off then back on quick) is enough to screw things up royally. We had a time of these momentary outages where I live, and this is what convinced me to get a good UPS. I got an Internet Office which has Overvoltage (surge, spike, and Lightning), Undervoltage (brownout), and outage. It has saved me lots of headaches. Governments and businesses are fine for protecting the Servers, but, NOT the desktops. Don't they realize that Servers are useless when they have nothing to serve TO??
  13. Thanks, at least the Add Reply thing was fixed. Still linking to mandrake-forum.org here.
  14. Only 1 hard disk? Eek! My current setup is 2 x 61 GB Maxtor ata100, and a 160 GB Maxtor ata133. Partions are: hda: 61 GB maxtor / = 4 GB swap = 3 GB /tmp = 10 GB /var = 10 GB /usr = 29.3 GB hdb: 160 GB maxtor /home = 160 GB hdc: 61 GB maxtor /pics = 27.8 GB /archives = 29.5 GB
  15. Who says it has to be a kid? The culprit(s) may be agents of a hostile foreign power, or even something like Al Queda. There are all sorts of possibilities, including Anarchists.
  16. Yes, there is alot that is different with Linux vs Windows.
  17. This reminds me of the problem I had with both mandrake and win98se, with the 1996 vintage NEC MultiSync XV1700+ (I think the model is correct). When I selected the correct model in the hardware list: HUGE TROUBLE! In mandrake, it was best to use a generic monitor for this. In win98se, it chose the XV1700 (not the + model) and it worked fine. I learned a lesson on that experience. Now, I have an ATI XPert 2000 Pro 32 MB 4x AGP and mandrake sees it as a Rage 128. No problems. My generic 15 inch flat panel TFT monitor is seen as a Custom monitor by Mandrake. I leave these hardware selections alone. NO problems. The only thing I did was turn on hardware acceleration for the ATI card. I did NOT test it, as I tried that and it came up with an error. (Maybe a bug somewhere in the test?).
  18. I had no problem following it. Keep in mind that there are 2 or more kinds of Law here. What people think of as Federal, State, or Municipal Law, is correctly called "Code." In the USA: Federal Law = U.S. Code, as Revised. (entire nation) State of Ohio Law = Ohio Revised Code. (entire State of Ohio) Mansfield City Laws = Mansfield Municipal Code (city of Mansfield, only) Then, no matter what the written Code says, what really counts, is Case Law. Did you notice the multiple references to specific Court Cases? That is Case Law. This is where the Precedents are set forth. Case Law determines How Code (written laws) apply (limitations and so forth). A real good example of a non-secret secret, is the relationship between Voltage, Current (amperes), and Resistance. It is called Ohm's Law, which is a basic Law of Physics. The US military Classified Ohm's Law as Top Secret (WW2). One of the first things learned in basic electricity or electronics, is Ohm's Law! Gee, it wasn't a secret even before WW2!! See how this applies to the SCO vs IBM and Linux case?? SCO is claiming that not only UNIX System V belongs to SCO, but, ALL Derived Works since. SCO claims ALL OS Source code belongs to SCO! Which is clear from both articles cited by links. SCO will have an extremely hard time in Court, based on the Case Law cited.
  19. I took the time and bothered to read the article. What enderle says in that applies to any 'cause'.
  20. Mandrake should simply do 2 things: First and foremost DEBUG the install, and get rid of all the apps that DON'T work!!!
  21. That chaintech Deluxe mobo comes with its own linux distro! It also comes with 2 x ata100/133 2 drive cables, a single fdd cable, a CBOX (4 front USB 2.0, Mic, and headphone jacks, in a 3.5 bay box), and 2 cdroms of drivers and utilities. The onboard sound is CMedia, as I recall. Max ram is 4 GB, and Max cpu is Athlon XP 3000+ (333 Mhz FSB).
  22. Micro Innovations? It wouldn't happen to be the Optical Extreme dual wheel, Model PD550P, would it???? I have a friend who has that particular model, and not being able to use everything (generic 3 button one wheel mouse is all he can use) in Mandrake, is what is keeping him back from more usage of Linux. So here are 2 people asking about Micro Innovations rodents, though maybe different sub species. :D
  23. Currently, I am using an ASRock mobo with KT266 chipset. The new Chaintech needs cpu, ram and video card before I swap things out. I don't as a rule use onboard sound or LAN. Though with the Realtech LAN on the Chaintech, that might change. My original post was nothing more than a request for information. Since it is a non-issue with mandrake 9.2, that would make it worthwile for me to get the 9.2 powerpack (I have used nothing but the powerpack from mdk 7.2). I am not going to port my Athlon XP 1700+, ATI XPert 2000 Pro AGP, nor sound card to the new system, and I can't use my PC133 on the new mobo (DDR only). Most of the current hardware is going into a secondary Win98SE system, mostly for gaming (on those rare occasions when I do game). I got the Chaintech 7VJL Deluxe Apogee, new in box, on eBay: 6 pci and one 8x AGP. None of those funky CNR, or whatever slots. Thanks guys!
  24. Is anyone using Mandrake 9.1 with the Via KT400/8235 (not nforce) chipset?? If so, any issues with the southbridge?? (or northbridge for that matter) The reason I ask, is that my new Chaintech motherboard uses this chipset. If there are problems, does Mandrake 9.2 solve them? Thank you in advance.
  25. Sometimes it is best not to mess with what Mandrake Installation detects. This is how how I screwed up with that NEC MultiSync. Mandrake detected (pre 8.2) a generic monitor, and I went and changed to the specific model. HUGE mistake! It was a huge hulking 1996 vintage 17 inch very heavy monster of a monitor. I bought a Generic 15 inch TFT Flat Panel monitor, and had that old one taking up space (lots of it), when a friend's monitor died. So it found a good home. Mandrake 9.1 Powerpack install sees my current monitor as a Custom and I don't mess with it. I learned the hard way. My current video card is an ATI XPert 2000 Pro AGP (32 MB), that Mandrake detects as a Rage 128. Nice thing is that I have hardware OpenGL with this, which is super nice! The only thing I did during install, was to make sure hardware OpenGL was selected, and everything works fine.
