    KDE bugs

How have we been installing ? Did you upgrade from 9.0 or was 9.1 a fresh install? was KDE installed from Mandrake's ISO's? How bout 9.2 --- fresh install or upgrades? I am suspecting some mixed up libraries from upgrades. 9.0 to 9.1 changed a lot of libraries.
  2. Welcome aboard the MUsB, Just to be sure, you are saying your bios was never set to boot from a CD and you also can not press F2 to enter the bios to set your laptop up to boot from a CD? Is there a running system on this ? You don't need both floppy and CD drive to install. You should be able to use CD 1 or if you could copy the files to your harddrive, then you would just boot off the floppy and install using the harddrive method. But on another note --- passwords on windows computers were made to be broken. Check this out: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechS...01&locale=en_US
  3. Don't know if this is true or not, but I have heard that the updated kernel has disabled packet writing to get by this LG bug. What exactly that does and do I really need it? --- I do not know. But, I do know I have been able to burn things without much problem using the 2.4.22-21 kernel. If this is true, then maybe it was best for Mandrake to continue with the original 2.4.22-10 kernel (which is the version that was released) ???

    mplayer CVS

Not sure where they would go, but I can check my system later tonight and try to find where all my codecs are. I stuck with the regular Mandrake issued rpms of mplayer and mplayer-gui and it plays 99 % of my stuff, including quicktime and windows media video. I found it did not play the newer wmv version 9 stuff tho, so I installed the win32-codecs rpm available from PLF. You can find it on our dowload server if your interested at: ftp://mandrake-forum.org/pub/PLF/mandrake/9.2/i586/
  5. My first instinct was exactly what chriz z said. My burning apps keeping going back to 1x everytime I start it up and I have to keep changing the setting to 48x. anyway, lets rule out the obvious first. My second instinct is --- roland is right, if your trying to copy from cd to cd, you need to enable scsi emulation for it to work.
  6. Welcome to our forum! Just wondering ... if you have kmix installed ? I think I needed it to get my sound working.
  7. Through no fault of Mandrake, there is an issue with certain LG CD-rom drives. This issue currently affects all public download releases of Mandrake 9.2. It seems LG's burners are safe from this. For more info concerning this issue and for status of certain drives, please see Mandrakes special errata page at: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3 To find out the make and model of your CD drive in Mandrake, open up a terminal/konsole and type: cat /proc/ide/hdx/model (where hdx corresponds with your device as listed with harddrake) It is highly recommended to upgrade your drive's firmware prior to installing or upgrading to 9.2.
  8. I can't confirm that ral, but according to Mandrake: from http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3 So it seems pretty safe that you should be OK. I have one of their dvd drives (LG DVD-ROM DRD-8160B) that survived through a 9.2 install.
  9. I really like 98 percent of my fresh 9.2 "torrent" release. I did have a LG drive, but apparently was not one of those affected. Just be sure to make a quick desktop shortcut to konsole or terminal, cause it will dissappear from the menu before installing the fix. There are a few other minor issues, but easily fixed. After the initial install and running the updates, my only problem I have with it now is some issue with my USB card reader (which I give up on now and will be posting a thread soon).
  10. Just to be clear --- Those torrents on suprnova are for the 9.2 edition that was released to clubmembers last month and has caused the problems with the LG drives. Since then, Mandrake has stopped the presses on this issue and have been working to build a new 9.2 release with a "fixed" kernel. There is also about 300 megs of updates that have been issued since, but it is unclear as to how much of these will make it into the "9.2.1" release. I just checked the official public mirrors, and they still have version 9.1 available to download, along with 9.2 rc, and all the current 9.2 final binaries... but no 9.2.1 release.
  11. /scoopy must play with this seamless filter that mysti has found. To be honest, yeah, it looks cool, but I think it lost that "Gulf" look. And for $400. --- I would personally teach him how use Mozilla Composer and I would even throw in a free copy of Mozilla too. ;) (PS: Macromedia's Dreamweaver would be a better choice)
  12. ...and we love to hear these comments.
  13. DragonMage, which texstar rpm did you install? I found a couple and had some luck with the one. I now have a version 10 installed and working. Here's what I had to do. Remember that I am using the 9.2 "torrent" download edition. Grab these rpms from: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distribut...drake/9.1/rpms/ k3b-0.10-2tex libid3lib3.8_2-3.8.2-2mdk Have your install CD 1 handy for: liblcms1-1.10-1mdk First time through this (using rpmdrake - install software) I got the following message: So I did have to first remove the older k3b-0.9-10mdk version. I think that was a first here. Also note, that with this version .10, I did not need a libk3b1 rpm like before.

    Splitting Files

Here's a recent similiar thread: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=9330 But seeing I am looking for something along these lines too... and that thread was more focused on audio files... I believe we are looking for something similiar to the "spandisk" option with DOS and ZIP files. I am imageing something like having an 704 meg (or larger) ISO or ZIP file that you want to save to CD's (and clear up your HD). Is this what you are seeking? Would Ark or another file compression app work here? Any other options people?
  15. A 3-in-1 reply: Pepse, How we making out with your upgrade? VILLA21, I find when sources don't want to compile, you usually need to install those kernel-sources rpm (that match your running kernel). Do you have this installed? If kernel-sources is installed, the next thing I look for is a missing application, such as make. Gnubie, I would uninstall that one and go back and install the one from your 9.1 discs. Don't forget you need the libk3b file too. These seem to be missing from all the .10 versions I have seen. Maybe this is our problem with .10 ?
  16. Because you mentioned this, I would try reinstalling KDE if Roland's suggestion don't do the trick. I would also delete the hidden .kde folder too. This should give you two choices for the log-in manager... one is mdkkdm, that is the one I used... the other I don't remember... maybe kdm something ?
  17. No, not yet. I think I would even settle for a "cryptic" man page about now. One of these days, I may just figure it out. In the meantime, I may try to tackle the rpm building thing. :D
  18. Looks like your getting the hang of it now and getting everything under control. The background image is working now with my IE and Mac 8.6 combo. That location page background doesn't show cause it is linked to someone's C: drive (but I bet you figured that one out already). I looked at the css file --- and to me it looks like the problem may be cause your missing the a:visited and a:active subsections. I am not sure if the a section alone is totally correct. This may be the cause of the links not working as you would like. Also, just wondering, how could a child folder on someone's personnal website with RR not be working, when the parent folder (or root) web files work ?
  19. I tried to install that texstar package in 9.2, but it wanted too much extra stuff. [root@localhost rpms]# rpm -ivh k3b-0.10.2-1tex.i586.rpm Failed dependencies: libid3-3.8.so.3 is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libart_lgpl_2) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libaudio) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libDCOP) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libfam) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libjpeg) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libkdecore) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libkdefx) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libkdesu) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libkdeui) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libkio) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libmng) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libpng) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libqt-mt) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex devel(libstdc++) is needed by k3b-0.10.2-1tex ADDED: PS: I realize I could probably run rpm -ivh --nodeps to get past this, but I rather not. What I need more than this is the newer cdrdao with ATAPI support --- which would allow CD to CD copying without having to emulated SCSI.
  20. I was trying to upgrade k3b to a newer 10 version today, but one of the rpm's wanted some strange file, and the others wanted to install a bunch of devel packages, that should not even be needed. You may need to install a 9 version instead, which should work much better than your other version anyway. It shouldn't be needed to uninstall the old one first. The newer one will replace the older one... unless you try and install one of those cvs versions. I noticed these don't recognize any installed versions and will install another copy of k3b on your system, leaving the other untouched. If you install using rpmdrake and have the maximum selection ticked, it will tell you what version is or not installed for the package you select. If you install using konsole and rpm, there are options to install or upgrade, such as: rpm -ivh or rpm -Uvh and if you use urpmi, I think it figures everything out for you
  21. Why not just install 9.1 now and begin your journey to the open source world? I ran 9.1 and currently run 9.2. Both are practally the same and have the same issues with me (USB card reader). If you want to upgrade later, its easy enough to do... only about 30 minutes and no hassles or constant rebooting (like windows). Here's some good reading for you: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/index.html
  22. kdesu konqueror seems to work great also from a desktop icon. Create new link to application and use this for the command.
  23. At first I thought you were trying to pull one over here, but I googled and did find these starting at $40 each and up. And I would need one per computer, plus the nic card. I think we scrap the bnc way and try one of the other routes. I need to open up those wall outlets and see what we have inside there, but I think I am leaning towards the rewire job... especially if they want to buy me one of those kits with 1,000 feet of wire, crimper, and tester ;) Just for you (and because we would probably mail order anyway), I will avoid the Belkin stuff. If I order, there is a D-Link nic card for $12.00 each or a no-name brand for $9.00 each (although these are probally made by same outfit that makes those LG cd-rom drives) I don't think there is any chance of getting this family to see the light with Linux at this time. But then again, I will have to reformat all their systems (AOL to real internet conversion) and I could slip one by them.
  24. I now see this home was wired for a 10Base2 (BNC) network, which is just about obsolete. I am finding the needed hardware is not readily available at our local computer store (Staples) or anywhere else for that matter. Also, the Ethernet cards I would need for each computer all seem to be for ISA slots, and they don't put them on boards these days, which also means, if they go and buy a new computer, it would kind of screw things up. Speed wise, just about anything will be better than what they get now. Security ? They are using windows 98/ME and AOL. We would most likely go with Verizon at 768 Kbps DSL. As for Comcast, they are charging $18. more per month and offer 1,500 Kbps here, but are promising 3,000. Verizon also offers a $10.00 discount with phone service. I also think Gowator is right, and I don't want to become their on call tech repair guy... tho the free beer and food still works for me sometimes. :D So I would like to stick to stuff they would easily be able to replace themselves if need be. So if I have read your suggestions correctly, and weighing in the quick and painless verses doing it right, we are looking at the setups below. (these are just quick prices from Staples) ------------------------------------------------------- The wireless way: $80.00 Linksys BEFW11S4 Router w/ 4-Port Switch $15.00 Belkin F5D5000 Desktop Network PCI Card (direct connect to #1) $60.00 Belkin F5D6001 Wireless Desktop PCI Network Card $60.00 Belkin F5D6001 Wireless Desktop PCI Network Card FREE DSL Modem and filters supplied with service TOTAL: $215.00 ------------------------------------------------------- The Cat 5 way: ( includes the hassle of running the wires through the wall and inbetween floors, which I am not sure they or I would want ) $15.00 Belkin F5D5000 Desktop Network PCI Card $15.00 Belkin F5D5000 Desktop Network PCI Card $15.00 Belkin F5D5000 Desktop Network PCI Card $40.00 Netgear FS605 10/100 5 Port Dual Switch $40.00 50 feet of cable (ready to plug in) to reach to other 2 computers FREE DSL Modem and filters supplied with service TOTAL: $125.00 ---------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for all the pointers... I may need them when the time comes to upgrade my own network someday.
  25. You will get different options to save depending on the type of image you have opened. If you opened the .GIF file, this is an indexed color image, which the JPEG file type can not handle. You need to convert the color mode to RGB, and then you should be able to save as a .JPG file. I don't know what you are trying to ask here --- or which page you are looking at. I seen one of your pages currently has the background image linked to your D: drive, so I will not be able to view that one. Another page you have the background image contained within HTML code, so that one is gonna move with the text (remember that background-image thing is a CSS trick and not HTML code). I did not see any pages using the suggested css code (whether linked to an external file, or tucked inside the HEAD tags) which should make it do what you would like: background-attachment: fixed; background-repeat: no-repeat;
