  1. Thanks for the help. I was able to use the fixboot on the XP CDRom to correct the error. It seems as though deleting the extra partitions I had previously confused Windows. All is working properly again. Thanks. Lee
  2. Hello all, I'm having a problem with a dual boot installation. I had 9.2rc2 (and several others before that) and Windows XP installed on this computer. I had about 10 different partitions. This morning I attempted to simplify things a bit while I was installing 9.2 and now I can't get XP to boot. The current configuration is: hda5 is / hda7 is /swap hda8 is /home hda4 is /mnt/win_c (XP called it L: this is my system partition, it's not first on the drive but this wasn't a problem before) hda6 is /mnt/win_d (XP called it M: this is my data partition) All data on my XP partitions seems to be in tact. The error I get on boot is something like "Can't find {windows system}/system32/hal.dll, please reinstall and try again." When I look on /mnt/win_c/system32 the file is there. Any suggestions? Thanks, Lee
  3. Oops ... thank you all for your help. Apparently it's a bad idea to install a OS updates on too little sleep. I did the install with custom partitions because it was a dual boot system and I didn't want it to get messed up. Unfortunately, I reversed the / and /home partitions and ended up assigning the /home partition to the 9.2rc2 / partition. Like most OSes Linux doesn't seem to like having two / partitions on the same system. I formatted both partitions, reinstalled and everything is working great! Thanks again. Lee
  4. Paleo, Thanks for the reply. I've always wondered how to easily get to a text login. However, the password wasn't the problem. Once I switched to text I was able to login. Another thread here suggested switching to text doing startx and then using MCC to change the login manager. However, once I switch to text startx won't work. I get a long X failure message. The only suggestion is to delete /tmp/.X0-lock. Even after doing that X still won't start. Which seems odd since it starts well enough to bring up the login manager that won't accept my password. Is there another way to change the login manager? I'm comfortable using vi to edit config files if necessary. Thanks, Lee
  5. I've just done (for the second time) a fresh install of 9.2 on a dual-booting Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I've been using this machine as a dual boot machine for nearly a year now. I've done a network install of 9.2 and everything appeared to go smoothly with a few minor exceptions (I had 3 files appear not to install 2 of them were related to KDE, no I didn't write down the names one was an artwork file the other I don't remember. Initially the kernel didn't install either, but it did install successfully in the end). When the system rebooted everything appears to go smoothly, I get to the login screen but it appears to not be the same login manager as 9.2rc2. It will not allow me to login. I know the password and login name are correct. I can not login with either root or the one login I created. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. Lee
  6. I'm working with Gnome on Mandrake 9.2rc2. I've had the same problem with previous versions. Whether I try to start it from the Menu or from the command line, it opens the Desktop Preferences directory. Whenever I try to start the Gnome Control Center from the command line, I get the following error message: --------------------------------------------- (gnome-control-center:3195): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. (nautilus:3195): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. --------------------------------------------- Any suggestions? Thanks, Lee
  7. Well as others have reported, I tried changing ownership of /tmp/.ICE-unix. I'm certain that didn't fix the problem as I had yet another crash this morning. A little info about my system: AMD Athlon XP1800+ Processor K7S5A Elitegroup Motherboard w/ SiS 735 Chipset Onboard Sound and Ethernet 512M DDR Ram IBM 40Gig IC35L040AVVA07-0, ATA DISK drive LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 9100b, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive NVidia GForce2 MX 64M RAM (w/ NVIDIA Linux x86 nvidia.o Kernel Module 1.0-4191 ) Logitech USB Mouse on usb2:2.0 bvc, thanks for your suggestion also, but I'm not really certain what to do with the info from the link you sent. Where do you change what sound server is used? I'm assuming thats what the comment about "artsdsp" means. Thanks for your help. Lee
  8. Below I've included the .xsession-errors file from my daughters account. I'm not certain if it really says much though. Thanks, Lee 10 DCOPClient::attachInternal. 9. Thanks for the reply, Paul. Any suggestions on what in particular I should look for in these files? I can't seem to find any errors directly associated with the times when I have to reboot. There are a few errors that show up repeatedly on boot and in response to CRON jobs. But they don't seem to coorelate with crash times. Thanks, Lee
  10. I'm looking for information on how to do general troubleshooting of my Mandrake 9.0 install. I've searched this forum and glanced through the documentation but can't seem to find a good troubleshooting tutorial. I've been running ML 9.0 on my system for several months now and recently it's become unstable. I need basic information on how to track down the source of my problem and fix it (i.e. where to look for error messages etc.). It seems to be associated with instability in the sound server as it frequently makes a horrific screeching sound (through the speakers not a crashing harddrive) just before it locks up tight. X freezes and the system is no longer accessible via ssh, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not certain exactely when this problem started as my daughter uses the xmms much more than I do and she just recently told me about the problem. I've also had problems with crashes when using Opera, Netscape, etc. to access midi files with Timidity. Thanks in advance. Lee
