  1. Since my last post on this subject I have dumped Skype, for the pure reason a lot of my acquaintances had other networks for communication ( fwd.pulver.com amongst others ) and I could not connect with skype. So I opted for Ekiga from ekiga.net Now I can connect to quite a few different networks and ekiga was written for linux. Not as fancy as skype but it works for me. Cheap landline calls globally. Can't fault it really. :P
  2. Sorry people but I can't understand what all the negative responses are about. I installed 2007 with little trouble at all. All my hardware works just fine, no hang ups in software honestly it just works! Yes there are a number of changes what with the new package interface and some apps I've never thought of using before. I even got my twinview monitors working with little effort. Guess I must be one of the lucky ones, either that or I don't expect great things. I love it....
  3. I am running a similar setup with no problems. The only thing I can see is :- Section "Device" Identifier "device0" VendorName "nVidia Corp." BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corp." BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" Missing from first declaration Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" Screen 1 Missing from first declaration : ' screen 0 ' EndSection I checked my setup which was configured using nvidia utility, when installing the nvidia driver. I am using a different board mind you. I don't know if that is it but everything else very familiar.
  4. My favourite firewall is smoothwall. I've run this for a number of years on an old computer that was not worth using for anything else. Why do I like smoothwall? I only need the one for running a smal network and it looks after the other computers, also the ability to run a web server, mail server on the orange interface without worrying too much about staying safe on the green network. The web interface is great to use and one can keep an eye on what is happening on the various networks. Yes it is overkill for a single computer, but I like it. :P
  5. Exactly the same result here. I have re-installed with various options for the fourth time and same result. Works fine with no 3D. Must have a look for compiz that has been mentioned.
  6. Yes I had the same message over the weekend. I just changed mirrors an it's all back to normal????
  7. I concur it is perfectly posible to have multiple sending accounts that you have access to. I have three and can send via all three. All three accounts that I have require a logon before being allowed to relay through that server that's why I have underlined that bit. But of course you already new that. ;) Keep trying it will happen. Just follow the instructions given above.
  8. I feel much better now ianw1974, I wasn't really worried, that was my sense of humour showing through. ;) Many thanks anyway, I have inserted the line as suggested and now I'll see if it makes a difference. Always handy to know these tidbits.
  9. Well I have tried various combinations of entry in fstab and none have made the slightest bit of difference  Guess I'll just have to keep on trying.
  10. satelliteuser083, you are not on your own with a very slow floppy, mine is in a pc and like yours nothing happens for ages when writing to the drive, even when it gets started very short burst are sent to the drive. I've been meaning to do something about it since installing 2006. Strangely enough it worked fine in previous versions. I'm going to look into it today so I'll report back if and when I find something, unless someone can beat me to it. ;)
  11. I rather think that could be the case as you got this message "Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected. libgtkhtml2_0-devel-2.6.2-1mdk" in the first place. MCC was trying to tell you that. I know it's a bit vague and cryptic but that's what I find. I can't say which package is the problem, maybe someone else can point it out for you.
  12. Usually this message means you have a version already installed just as you were informed by the mesage from urpmi, ie everything already installed. It seems to me if you really want libgtkhtml2_0-devel-2.6.2-1mdk then you need to uninstall libgtkhtml package and re-install your downloaded package using urpmi to get the dependencies. You may need to re-install the libgtkhtml package again afterwards. I trust this makes sense to you. Sorry if I appaer to be babbling.
  13. tyme, you are quite right, Firefox is now upto v1.06 and does not have the display problem. I have just installed Opera V9 and that is now displaying correctly. Seems like we are getting there. Konqueror still messes up a few pages though, even Mandriva pages. I very rarely use konq so that's no big deal.
  14. Come to think of it, no only web browsers, and it happens with all on linux I have tried. Opera, Mozilla, Firefox and Konqueror.
  15. I'll have to pass on that one
  16. Yes I've encountered just that same problem. To get round it in Firefox bring up the fonts dialog box i.e. Edit.->Preferences->Fonts & Colours. Select from the drop down box for 'Display Resolution' 'Other' and you will be presented with another dialog which shows a line for you to actually measure (with a ruler). That will give you the resolution for your display. Accept the settings on all the boxes and you should not have the problem again. I've not got a solution for other browsers as I mainly use Firefox.
  17. Below is my xorg.conf which I use for exactly what you want to do. Of course you will need to replace any reference to nVidia and such with your card details and drivers. Maybe it is not the ideal layout, but it works for me and has done since using MDK10.1 and now I'm on 2006. At least you may be able to get the idea. If your still unsure what to do google for 'twinview' and or 'cinerama' and you should get plenty of info to get you going. Hope it helps. 18. Indeed John, this is the sort of thing that will put newcomers off. Unfortunately some things like this don't arise until they are tested by the community at large. As there is such a wide range of equipment that can be plugged into the system it must be virtually impossible to test all configurations. I think boards such as this one play a very important part of the linux community. I have learned from your post that I must start sharing my experiences more and put the results on the board.
  19. I can fully understand the problem as this is exactly the situation I get when installing and seems to be the NVIDIA driver. I run dual monitors on an FX card one of which is lcd and the other crt. I always have to boot into safe mode and init 3 to get the screens sorted. If I just allow the complete install onto the LCD monitor the standard driver works fine on just one screen unless I do a test!! that's when the problem arises. Why I don't know and I just don't do the test anymore. Like yourself I never tried it with prior releases as I only had the CRT monitor at the time. I know this isn't an answer I'm just letting you know you are not on your own.
  20. Once again AussieJohn speaks words of wisdom :- To add my own thoughts though, I feel Bill Gates gave the uninformed computing public something they could understand. In the early days it seemed like a good idea. Only when the power, money hungry business community saw the Windows Systems potential did the whole thing take on the 'Rule The world' attitude. At the time whem Microsoft was born there were a number of quite user friendly manufacturers producing computer systems, only they did not catch the eye of the big business world, otherwise I don't think even Bill Gates would be what he is today. I neither love nor hate Bill Gates, I don't know him. I do hate the Windows System as it is impeding the progress of inventiveness ( I think that might be a new word  ), although the linux world is making a good job of progressing. Proving it can be done without monopoly. Glad I got that off my chest, I can sleep tonight now.
  21. It definitely needs to be run as root to access most of the drive(s). You will still get reports of cannot open as some files are locked as they are in use. If you want or need a full scan you will have to shut down any gui and got to a run level 3, log in as root and then run a scan. Once done you shouldn't need to do a full scan like that again. In fact it is not necessary to do one, but by all means do it, if you feel better.
  22. What an interesting thread this is The attraction of Linux for me is being able to tailor the system to how I want it to run, not me running the system as someone else wants me to run it. It's also about choice and being an enthusiast not just a user. Whilst I do not consider myself a guru I do like getting in there and getting my hands dirty. I think the fear of a system is the mis-information that has been rumoured around. Most users are just that 'users' not enthusiasts. Sorry if I'm waffling. Keep the thread going it's the best thing I've read for some time.
