  1. Thanks for your advice tyme. doody
  2. Dear usergroup. I have been using LinDVD for a while now but have enountered a strange problem. It plays DVDs like prerecorded movies OK, and DVDs that have recorded television programmes from television. When playing a DVD with recorded television programmes it works fine if there is more than one thing recorded. The front screen shows a series of picture boxes that you can click on to start playing, HOWEVER, if there is just one box with something recorded (i.e. only one thing recorded on television) and you click on this to play it just goes back to the 'LinDVD' front screen. No matter how many times I try it will not play. I have tried different disks and it is always the same problem - if just one thing has been recorded from TV it won't play, if more than one thing has been recorded it will. Does anyone have any ideas? (By the way, I have already downloaded the patch from errata about LinDVD stopping after so long, so this is not an issue.) Thanks for all your help, doody

    printer software

Hi AussieJohn, Thanks for the advice, but it still didn't work. I don't have the spring edition of Discovery. I found printing packages in the control centre area which were already installed. Did not find what you advised. I tried downloading from easyurpmi and that seemed to download too but then I could not find it to install it. I can't think what else to do but thanks for your help anyway. Take care, doody

  5. Dear usergroup I need to do a nozzle check/test on my Epson C40 Plus printer but I cannot find anything that is like a utilities menu that will allow me to do this. I've checked everywhere but there is no menu that will allow me to do a nozzle check. Does anyone know the answer to this puzzle? I am grateful for any replies, Many thanks doody
  6. Thank you spinynorman, this did the trick. I shall remember this for future use. Thanks again! doody :D
  7. Dear usergroup I recently purchased the box set of Mandriva Discovery 2007. I've had lots of problems with it, but the main one is that the LInDVD player keeps crashing. What can I do to fix this? I appreciate any help, thanks doody
  8. Dear usergroup, I've used Mandriva for years and have no problem installing from scratch the operating system. I upgraded from the 2007 free version because I wanted the LinDVD and other things like RealPlayer, Kaffeine, etc. etc. I've ordered the boxed version from Mandriva which cost approx £40.00 and had to wait 3 weeks for it. I have tried installing it today, there are 2 disks in the box, but the book doesn't say which one to use, I have tried instlaling both of them separately. There is no usually set up wizard like in the older versions or even in the free 2007 version, (i.e. where you are guided through the set up). The main reason I am so angry is that what I have paid for (LinDVD, Kaffeine, RealPlayer etc...) is not there at all. I have tried going into the install packages/software. When clicking on the multimedia tab as described in the 'Getting Started with LInux' book it states to click on 'Multimedia' - Video - Kaffeine. I have no kaffeine available. When I put a DVD movie in the machine it does not load up LInDVD automatically as it says in the book. I've always been loyal to Mandriva because it is quite simple for newbies like me, but now I am thinking about going to other Linux distributions in the future. Am I doing something majorly wrong? I appreciate any help. (sorry for being grumpy!) doody :o
  9. I've been using the free version of Mandriva 2007 for a while now but wanted some of the extra things that came with the boxed version for example LinDVD etc. I've just installed the new boxed version, which was't straight forward. I was expecting it to do the usuall thing when installing, i.e. go through questions etc. and ask to set up root password and users and check printer settings etc. This has done none of that and I don't know how to set up the root password. I'm disappointed with Mandriva. I would be grateful if you could offer any advice. Thanks guys, doody
  10. Dear usergroup, I cannot find the feature that is like 'PostIt' notes called Knotes in Mandriva 2006, is it still available in 2007? Thanks for your help doody

    kaffeine player

Dear usergroup, I have tried to download kaffeine player but been unsuccessful. I've used urpmi and also downloaded it from a kaffeine website and now have a 'kaffeine' icon on my desktop, but when I go into installed software packages in my installing computer function it is not listed, when clicking on the icon on the desktop, it doesn't give any clear idea how to install. I appreciate any help, thanks doody (newbie)

    linDVD

Dear usergroup, I have read that the boxed version of Mandriva Linux 2007 has a player that plays prerecorded DVDs call LinDVD. Can I download this myself using urpmi? What do I have to do please? Thanks for your help. doody :P

    cheap software

Dear usergroup I have just purchased Mandriva Linux 2007 from a cheap internet site in the UK. I've not installed it yet, but I have been reading on the news about the spread of botnets, trojans etc. I've also looked in Google at issue with botnets and Linux and some sites/blogs state that Linux is not 100% infallable. I've also read about people in China buying cheap, pirated software of Windows operating systems which have pre-installed trojans. Perhaps I'm a bit paranoid, but is it possible that some of the Linux OS you can buy cheap from websites have trojans etc. in them? I am definitely a Linux newbie (and always will be) and when it comes to using Klamav I don't really know what I'm doing. (It says I must use a path or something and then when I click on one of the boxes listed it still doesn't work.) Ha, ha! I'm a hopeless case! I would appreciate any advice/knowledge regarding this issue. Thanks again, doody

    firefox etc.

Hello forum... I can't get any sound when going onto YouTube etc. apparently because my Firefox browser is too old. How do I install Firefox 1.5 on Mandriva Discovery 2006? I've tried the urpmi thing but nothing worked... Also, what version of Firefox is on the boxed version of the new Mandriva Discovery 2007? Generally, is is worth buying the 2007 version anyway? Thanks for all your hellp and advice.. doody :P

    firefox

Dear usergroup I've been using the default Firefox browser that came with Mandriva dIscovery 2006. But reading on another posting on this site it seems it may not be so secure. Do I need to download a newer version of this or is the one I've got OK? If I do need to download another version, how would I do this? Yes, I am a newbie still. Thanks for your help, doody
