  1. Is eth0 your wireless card? Does 9.2 have a modprobe.preload file? I forgot. It might be possible, if it does, to get the module loaded for the wireless card before it tries to bring up the network. That's the reason it's failing all the time is my guess.

    Linux Games

Just an FYI, Unreal Tournament has a Linux installer. Check http://www.lokigames.com to get it.
  3. You will need a partitioning tool, like partition magic, to create some blank space at the end of your drive. You can then use that space in the FAQ listed above to install Linux. I say, personally, stick with the newest version out there. Linux will use whatever space you give it, but if you want a fully functioning desktop, complete with KDE, you'll probably want at least 5 gigs of space. That's a minimum. I personally have 120gigs of space, all linux, on my desktop. I recommend you create at bare minimum 2 partitions. One for / and one for /home. Given the 5 gig example above, I would go 4 gigs for / and 1 gig for /home. You'll most likely want to have more space than that. If you decide to create a 3rd partition, make it /usr. Make this one the largest as this is where Mandrake (and most, if not all other distros) installs all of your programs.
  4. you could set a key binding to, say, 'umount /mnt/cdrom && eject /mnt/cdrom', that would make it eject, but I have no idea about getting it back in.
  5. I'm certainly glad I could help you out.

  7. 15? Seriously, though; I know of 3 people now who have experienced the same problem with the newest firmware update for that particular router.
  8. There should be a new topic about this, but let me guess about the router: Linksys BEFW11S4? If so, I had a very similar problem. Unplug the router for a few hours then plug it back in. Worked for me.
  9. Log in, su to root and type XFdrake Reconfigure your graphics card (don't worry, the nvidia driver will still be there) then exit back to your normal user and try startx Should work.
  10. Try downloading the iso files off of one of the mirrors. You'll get much better results
  11. I could be wrong, but I think you have to exit and restart firefox for the themes to be selectable after you download them.
  12. nvidia cards are really well supported in Linux. When I buy a new card, it will be an nvidia card.
  13. It will start the installer as normal, but it gives you more options and does more probing for hardware.
  14. A quick google search yielded a link to this tutorial: http://www.linuxelectrons.com/article.php/20040507104718960 Looks like you need ndiswrapper to get it working. If you want the rpms, check http://rpmfind.net and grab the newest version.
  15. How far into the installation does it get? Do you get to the screen that says "Press Enter or press F1 for more options"? If so, Press F1 and type 'linux expert' (no quotes) and press enter. See if that helps.
  16. Update to this: Using the script to install Jedi Academy makes it so that you can't update the game... I'm going to try it the normal way later tonight and see if that works.
  17. Here's an update to what I've tried so far, as well as my results; ymmv: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - Installed flawlessly thanks to an installer that you can get here: http://www.kratz00.org/linux/installer.php (I forget who gave me this link, but thanks) You have to modify the start script that is created if you have cedega, but the game runs flawlessly from what I've seen so far. As a note, this game would not run at all for me, even using this installer, with WineX 3.3 and XFree86. Don't know the story there, but I am the only person I've found with those same issues. Battlefield 1942 (and expansions) - Installs perfectly. I recommend having 2 terminals open, one to launch the installer (from a directory other than /mnt/cdrom, of course) and one to unmount/mount the cd's. I haven't played this yet Warcraft 3 (and expansion) - Installed like a dream. Works great Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Installs great. Follow the same 2 terminal instructions from above. The installer might run a little slower than it's Windows counterpart, but it's barely noticable.
  18. I don't use p2p, ever. I don't like it at all. You say 'with a little tweaking' What kind of tweaking? That's a game that I was going to get (BattleChest for $39.98 at WalMart) but I want to know your experience and your tweaking before I do anything.
  19. If you open your Software Sources Manager from your menu (System > Configuration > Packaging) you can edit that particular source only. Change the path and save the changes. Ex: If it says file:///mnt/cdrom Change it to file:///mnt/cdrom2 (or whatever your dvd-rom is in /mnt)
  20. No, your Athlon XP will work just fine. btw. I moved this topic from Software to Emulation
  21. Ok, before you say it, I know Transgaming has a list of games on their website that they say are compatible (or, some that aren't) but I want your feedback. What games have you played (the newer the better) that work well with Cedega/WineX? I'm really interested in newer ( < 6 months) games, but if there's a really good game out there that can still be purchased that runs well, please let us know. I want the feedback of this forum, cause I trust all of your opinions. If there are any strange quirks to getting the game installed, please share them. Also, in case anyone is wondering; I am subscribed to Transgaming and have been for over a year.
  22. You can use the --noclean option for urpmi and the rpms will be stored somewhere in /var/lib
  23. The next version of gdesklets (0.30) is supposed to be a lot less intensive on your system. They're doing away with the sensors so that should decrease python usage a lot.
  24. Do you start X from cli or does it start automatically? What WM are you using?
  25. The lock file is in /var/lock I think. Might be in /var/lib/urpmi
