  1. This is also a program for modelling. So you could make a comparison maybe for yourself, but you should check if you can import the models into blender. I read you can import the models into blender, but since I haven't done it myself, I can't know for sure or if there are limitations. the link ... :): http://www.wings3d.com/
  2. I suppose you mean makign games :) .... I believe blender can do this. They added it ('again) recently. http://blender.org/ http://www.blender3d.com/ (don't ask me what the difference is .. , but blender3d-site seems to have an interactive-part...) http://www.blendergames.com/ ??? http://www.blender3d.com/cms/Stand-alones.162.0.html http://www.blender3d.com/cms/Game_engine.250.0.html Hopes this helps some
  3. The problem is your firewall I suppose ... I believed the problem is as follow (maybe)...: When you send a file, you're not reallty sending it ...their downloading it from you. So they want to request a download from you (on a different port than you use for chatting)...so the firewall sees this request coming in on a port and doesn't know that it is related to the chat-sessions ... since you didn't send anything on that port I suppose. If you want to do is..the only way for know this works (as far as I know) is by opening the ports used for "downloading" the file. Add this rule to the /etc/shorewall/rules-file (this is if you don't have a network): ACCEPT net fw tcp 6891:6900 The following rules are the ones I need for chatting on msn and sending and recieving files. ACCEPT fw net tcp 1863 ACCEPT fw net tcp 6891:6900 ACCEPT net fw tcp 6891:6900 ACCEPT fw net tcp 443
  4. Hotwayd or a branch of it also supports sending email through hotmail if you want ...
  5. I don't have a dialup connection ... but I know that there is an option for ppp-connections called "persist". This means (as far as I knw) that when the connection gets termintaed, it will reconnect. You can add it to your /etc/ppp/options-file. I think it shoulk also be added to the /etc/ppp/peers/<a file ..with me it's called adsl>)file. I'm not quite sure about this, but it can maybe help. To clarify ... (I hope these files exists and are used) ..add a line with word persist to both files. However, you're problem can also maybe solved by sending an icmp signal ..or something like that every 3 hours (depending on the time it takes you to get disconnected) to your ISP.
  6. I tried to resize it with a friends also. I tried several programs to defragment windows xp, but it would keep some data scattered it seems, preventing it to be resized. However a program that did the trick for me is, bootitng. It's shareware, but you can use it for a specified amount of time... It worked for me, hopefully also for you ... http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ Maybe that qtparted or so can do it also...
  7. May I correct that a little bit? We have 3 groups/peoples in Belgium .. the 2 you mentionned and the German part in the east.
  8. You shoudl check this.. 5(I can look upi the link again), but if they want (if tejhy ask for official company support or so) ... for educational pourpose you can get a free site license for star-office. I ebelieve also teh students, professors can get a free copy of staroffice. Ofcourse Openeoffice is more current I suppose, but I mentionned it if ...
  9. It seems acpi can help you ... http://acpi.sourceforge.net/documentation/index.html http://acpi.sourceforge.net/documentation/.../processor.html
  10. I'm not really faimiliar with this subject, but I'll give it a shot. If it's an athlon-mobile, there is a kernel-module foir it to enable the powerXXX technology of it ... I suppose that couldhelp you, but I haven't used it myself. Doesn't acpi have options for this? like slowing down the cpu..stopping the harddisk, ... Reducing processor consumption is maybe what the above module does, not sure though. I suppose this isn't part of acpi.
  11. In the high-secuirty-level you can only shut down as root I believe, but that wouldn't explain why it even starts teh shutdown ..so maybe you knew that ..sorry then. Normally corruption will be "fixed" .... ext3 will do a check on boot although it isn't really necessary I THINK. Reiserfs will repair evrything quickly and also xfs-filesystem. There are others, but I haven't used them yet. Depending on what you want there is quite some software availabel to my opinion. Maybe there should eb a simple script that gives you a lot of download-servers .. Maybe powerpack-users have this already perinstalled(liek when you choose a server for updates you get a list)? When you have reinstalled and experience problems ... just post them here and we'll try to help. Good luck!
  12. Sometimes kde really loaded slowly for me ... maybe that is your problem? What solved it for me, is going to a virtual terminal( ctrl+alt+F1) or another desktop-environment , login, ... and remove everything IN my Autostart-folder (<your homeDirectory>/.kde/Autostart) ... After this kde loaded quickly again.

    dvd -> xvid

I know that k3b can do that..but if it is good, I don't know... never used it. Quickrip did also do this, but it seems it just discontinued, but is maybe already picked up again. Maybe a little more than you ask ... a video editor: This is for use with kde ...although you can also use them if you use something else than kde. http://kino.schirmacher.de/article/static/2 There is also one that uses the gtk (for gnome)-widgets...I'll have a look around if you want this one. You also have mencoder. There arre front-ends (graphical apps) that use mencoder: http://www.libsdl.de/projects/konverter/ It's not really for gnome ..but uses gtk(it's also a video-editor actually): http://www.libsdl.de/projects/konverter/ Don't know it t uses gtk, but maybe thos one?: http://www.libsdl.de/projects/konverter/ This app is maybe also interesting for your purpose (it is for conerting between formats "only"..not a fullfledged editor): http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/ I can also mayeb help you if you want to do it using the commandline. Hopes these get you going.
  14. If you're studying for an IT-degree, I would recommend it ... I'm only a student myself, but I think that some knowledge of OO-design is helpful, certainly if you're going to make software I think. Anyway , I live XXX miles.kilometres away from you ...depending where you live :D. I also first learned procedural programming .... and then OO. I wish you luck if you're going to follow it (nothing bad meant).
  15. I thought you could just put a dvd-rw or so in yoru computer and just use the copy, ..commands since (rw) is just like a filesystem... You have to format it ofcourse first .... Any comments on this? I wrote a video-dvd with growisofs. You can make video-dvd's using linux ... make menu's, .... Gui's for this are still rare, but everything can be handled from commandline :). Maybe you're not a commandline-person :). The control over encoding, ... is quite great to my opinion .... Michel.
  16. For the people interesting ..I solved it by installing the latest transcode (cvs) from source. I also installed mpjpegtools 1.6.1.93 (think that si right ..withj later versiopns transcode wouldn't compile). I would recommend to everyone to compile these apps from source or have apps thaty have the optimisation-code for their processors? Just by also compiling mjpegtools from source, I got a 1/3 speed-increase. SO instead of a 30 hours -process it became a 20 hour ..evev :) less ,... around 17-18, I think. The modfying of teh frame-rate and the encoding alone go a lot fater. I think around 7-8 hours for a 3 hour movie. I also upscaled to 720*576.. If anyone wants the command I used...just ask... :D.
  17. I'm using reiserfs and xfs. I'm still looking for a solution. Maybe it's because of yuvscaler..don't know at the moment, but it takes 20 hours before I know if it will work ... I tried skipping the frames I already had, but yuvscaler complains that the frame-nukmbering doesn't start with 0 .. that's what I think anyway.
  18. thanks anyway. I found a way to enlarge it using pipes and yuvscaler with the bicubic algorithm. There si no quality loss as far as I can SEE..really impressivem but it takes 30 hours and yuvscaler crashed on me after 182000 frames of the 250000. This means after 20 hours or so after encoding ..long enough... It's driving me mad.... I have to encode during 20 hours and hope it will get over it? I'm trying again after I modified some stuff, but I also read that the mjpef-tool had a limit of 2 GB at the moment or so (maybe it's fixed now, someone??) and when it crashes the file is 2,1 GB it says ... hmmmm.... getting stressed about this ...... If I succeed, I'll post my commandline. Btw, Gowator... I'm decoding the xbid to raw YUV...so this method shoudl also work from any other format I think. I'm not sure if the quantisation would be ok...but since it is yuv .... Maybe not because it froms xvbid, but anyway, you could check the size after encoding some frames and estimate the final size... don't forget to include the size of the audio stream (for people wanting to do this too)!!! It's the resizing (enlarging) to 720x576 that slows this down to a crawl, but the quality is nice, like I mentionned before. All remarks are welcome...
  19. Could you print the error log of xine here when it gives such an error? I don't work with totem (but I use xine ...:D), but if it can pass command-line-options to xine ... Try this maybe: totem --verbose=3 It should print out a lot of info then...
  20. Heya, I converted a xvid to dvd using transcode, but I have a problem using it with a normal dvd-player. The xvid was 16:9 (576x320). When I play it on the dvd the movie is shown on the upper half of the screen instead of teh full screen. I looked around a littl ebit and found that there is something like anamorphic 19:6 (in which most commercial dvd's are stored it seems). I don't get it completely, but I think it means that the movie is stored on the dvd in 4:3 (or has a longer length in X-axis or so than the X-width of a tv ). Anyway if you would play it on a "normal" 4:3 tv the picture is strected vertically. When you switch to 19:6 bars appear on top and bottom and it displays ok. This is so that when switching to hdtv or so ... (anyway 16:9 tv's) will ensure that the quality is still ok. SO, I have to enlarge may mpeg2 from 576x320 to 720x576... I don't want to reencode from xvid to mpeg2 ... please :). Anyway when I scale the mpeg2 up to 720x576 the picture quality gets bad from time to time ..really not enjoyable. When I watch the current mpeg2 with xine and make it full-screen on my pc (1024x768) the picture-quality is still ok...so I suppose it is possible to make it stiil look ok 720x576. When I do it now some moments get really blocky. I tried to set mpeg2enc with E 1, no movement searching, ...I still get bad quality. S (again :)), is the resolution indeed the reason why it won't display correctly on the dvd-player... The dvd-player stretches the movie so it takes up the complete X-length, but in the height uit only occupies the upper half of the screen. The lower contains some strange lines .... My self-made menu use 4:3 btw. (Like you may have noticed..this is for a PAL-system ). Doesn anyone now a good tool upscale the mpeg2 and if needed the xvid ....so it still will look ok. I tried to upscale the xvid and write out the raw yuv-stream and it looks ok, ..so it is in the mpeg-encoding that it gets bad ... but this can be because of teh upscaling maybe.... But if I could upscale the mpeg2 I already have at 576x320, I would be even mroe happy :). Thanks.
  21. I might make that rpm for you, since we're using gis-software at school now... But it will take some time...
  22. lol, I see. xinerama is not so good for different resolution output-devices. Well, I want this myself maybe, so I'll have a look around again .
  23. I am not familiar with this since I haven't tried it myself, but I think, you want xinerama. This will combine your 2 outputs in one big virtual screen ..which you can split up to different virtual desktops like you can also do with 1 output. It says you need 2 garphic cards or a dual-head-video-card. I don't know what dual-head means, but (for myself) I hope this just means that 1 graphic card with an extra video-out can also use this ... So, once you have set this up, you could just drag an application to another virual desktop that use your projector as ouput-device and it would appear on your projector.... This seems nice :). I hope this is correct. Here is a how-to for xinerama (examples are also present in this how-to): http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Xinerama-HOWTO/index.html Hopes this helps Screenshots would be nice .... :D.
  24. Do you mean opimized for athlon-xp or just plain athlon? Since I'm using athlon-thunderbird, I've build all my rpm's with athlon-thunderbird as optimisation, .. Don't know if a lot of people use athlon-thunderbird or do the most users here use athlon-xp. Say I would optimise for athlon in generla from now on, would the optimisation be a lot different when I would optimise for my athlon-thunderbird? Any idea? Another thing ... I'm trying to make my spec-files follow mandrake's name convention for easier rpm-downloading when I want to download using urpmi... I suppose I shoudl finally make work otf that then :). A reason that makes my life also easier :). I'm learning this spec-stuff, so I don't want to use mandrake's...only look at them for tips when the compiling won't work :). Mayeb you don't feel comfortable I'm using this ... I have made spec-files for almost all the codecs that xine can be dependent on (the main stuff anyway), so that wouldn't be a lof of extra work for me. Since I want to have support for as much as possible myself: ogg, speex, theora, flac, xvid, ffmpeg, a52, ... and a lot of stuff these things are dependent on. Just for the fun of it and when I would have some spare time.. I maybe can compile some stuff for athjlon-64, but UI wouldn't be able to try it myself :), but just because it is new :D... and it only takes changing a paramter :D. I won't optimise for athlon-xp (can't use that myself ..sorry..ok maybe one from time to time ... ) If someone is willing to do that and a lot of users have athlon-xp's.... I suppose he/she would be better suited for contributing. I would like athlon-optimised stuff myself... I suppose it helps a little bit :).
  25. Blender was first commercial andthen people aroudn teh world bought it and gpl'd it as far as I can tell. The game-develop-part has been gpl'd also recently. The author released it now under the gpl I believe. So maybe worth looking at... http://www.blender3d.com/ http://www.blender3d.com/cms/Stand-alones.162.0.html http://www.elysiun.com/support/browse.php
