  1. ...and gnome is still slow and buggy... *sigh*
  2. It is supposed to hit the mirrors late this week or early next week afaik. They are fixing the last show-stoppers right now. It is always better to wait a few days and release a reasonably stable system than rushing things and having a rather bug-riddled release that will give you bad pr. Jmho

    3D Desktop

Welcome aboard. :) Could you please tell us the graphic card that you are using? It is very probable that you need to install some graphics drivers, as Mandriva ONE includes proprietary drivers for nvidia and ati while Mandriva Free is a 100% free software release, thus does not ship with proprietary software (it will have to be added later, using e.g. the available software mirrors).
  4. I would check if the system overheats. I had that happening many, many, many years ago and the result was a forced shutdown of the system. Check the fans, the graphic-card, the processor, everything you can think of.
  5. Scarecrow, I installed gnome on my cooker system and it has way fewer bugs than the rc1 version or 2007..1 (where gdm was pretty borked). It works very well now and the "use browser mode" in nautilus finally got fixed. :) Also, the constant freezing in Firefox seems to be gone... for now. I will have to push the system to its limits though for confirming that the cpu eating is a thing of the past. Seems as if 2008 will be one of the better Mandriva releases.
  6. I am not sure, but maybe some voting database included in bugzilla might be an idea. That way, apps could get only one vote per category by every user as you have to register then with your email for filing bugs and voting... The chance of abuse is thus significantly limited imho.
  7. Let's be honest: Although security updates are nice, 2006.0 should be patched pretty good by now and (from my experience) many desktop users do not really need the security patches as most of them fix only server-related problems. Bugfixes are of course a different thing altogether. I know, it sounds strange, especially as I have a double firewall and SELinux enabled on my machines... :D
  8. Which Mandriva version do you use and which mirrors do you use/have enabled? (plf free, plf non-free, nonfree, contrib?) Did you update the repository information (hdlist.cz file) already? Maybe some packages got updated. If everything fails, try using the backports mirrors for amule. AFAIK, amule could always be installed without any problems on the mandriva system of a friend of mine (both 2006.0, 2007.0 and 2007.1).
  9. If 2006 does all you need, why consider upgrading? If this ain't a mission critical machine, I'd leave it as is until you really need a new feature. But that's only mho.
  10. Just a tip: If you want to move windows around (because they are too big and you cannot click the ok button otherwise), hold down the "alt" key, then click on the window and move it around so you can reach all necessary areas. Might be a way to solve your problem with config/install screens.
  11. main: The main distribution media with the officially supported packages contrib: Lots of additional packages non-free: Some packages that do not contain open source software main_updates: Updates for main, including security updates contrib_updates: Updates for contrib, including security updates non-free_updates: Updates for non-free, including security updates main_backports: Newer but less-tested versions of some packages in main contrib_backports: Newer but less-tested versions of some packages in contrib and finally non-free_backports: well, you get the idea... https://mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php ;)
  12. The only installed plugin I have is flash... will try without it. I have also checked bugzilla and it seems that I am not the only one who experiences firefox eating up the cpu. (Bug is iirc already assigned). I will keep you informed if I find out something new. PS: Firefox bug is solved by last update.
  13. Actually you can install almost any distro on that hardware. You only have to customize the setup and read the basic FAQs/Wikis for the distros, so you won't feel lost in case you are dropped to a command line environment for the installation (like in arch or gentoo).
  14. Welcome, Vois. :) To be honest: I wouldn't use Mandriva on a G3 as it ain't officially supported and the last ppc discs that were released were those for 2005LE and you had to tweak things in order to get the yaboot to work all. I have a G3, too, and I put Debian on it. It is the best option for such an "ancient" machine imho.
  15. Thanks for pointing my nose on it, neddie. And sorry for being a lazy bastard these days (I simply have too much work these days. My brain hurts...). I meant that the firefox eats all cpu resources, not my memory.
  16. It is only the mozilla-firefox-bin that eats up all the memory on my system. from 54% to 97% of cpu ressources, and it happens when I visit regular sites (no flash/java) and very infrequently. There is no real telling what could cause it except a big memory-leak in the package imho.
  17. You can start the network service in the MCC (as explained above for disabling, but this time, click on "start"). Or you can start it as root from a terminal with chkconfig network start You have to be quick with the "i" key. Maybe you missed the small time-window for hitting "i"t. If interactive mode really doesn't work, then check if you can boot up in failsafe mode while the network ain't activated. If that also fails, then there is definitely something screwed up. In that case, please provide some hardware information about your modem.
  18. Hehe... then give RHEL/CentOS or Debian stable a try. Almost unbreakable. (yeah... I know... unless you do some rm -f -r --no-preserve-root /* nonsense. :P)
  19. Welcome aboard. :) There are two ways: The first one is to hit "esc" (or was it "F2"???) for seeing all the messages in the bootup (The boot-screen will show you which key it is. Sorry, don't remember exactly, as I am currently in front of my fedora box). Once you see the messages, hit "i" for interactive startup. You will be asked about the services/processes you want to start. When the network related questions come, hit "n" (no). That will bypass the services for now. Once your system is up and running, you can (= second approach) adjust the services that should be started automatically in the MCC (configure your computer). Go to the system-> services section and uncheck the network service that hangs your system. Also check the network setup. I guess there is an option for enabling/disabling automatic activation of the device and maybe an option for adjusting the timeout value. Basically, the system should not freeze but timeout after some time. If it freezes you should also be able to simply bypass the service hitting ctrl+c in case you failed to go into interactive startup.
  20. I case you don't know what logs are: SilversSurfer is talking about the following directories/files which monitor/document your computers behavior: /var/log/messages /var/log/dmesg
  21. I have experienced some cpu-usage that is unusual on my cooker system. At times the system freezes for some seconds when it reaches 50-100% CPU usage. Beagle is uninstalled, unnecessary services are disabled but still e.g. the mozilla engine eats up the cpu like Homer Simpson eats donuts. I guess that there is a serious memory-leak in one or more packages. But then... Well, it is Cooker. Such things tend happen there.
  22. I installed usually by downloading first a base system. Once that one is in place, I went on and downloaded the graphical desktop and all the other nice things. Worked well for me when my dsl connection was still limited to 768 kb/s. Since I have a 6000 DSL connection, I usually do a netinstall in only one step.
  23. With IBMs backing, OpenOffice will definitely become more "mainstream" in the future. That's good news indeed. :) We use OOo at our newspaper already (due to the many viruses that affect MS Office and then cripple the whole Windows network by exploiting vulnerabilities) and with a lot of uccess, but if I want to share documents with outsiders, I am still forced to submit them in a MS Office compatible format (.rtf, .doc, ...) or as PDF on a regular basis, which is a downside. That could change in a few years however.
  24. If correcting permissions doesn't fix it, then Mandriva really borked it tremendously. Actually, I got sick of the many bugs in 2007.1 that no one cared about to correct that I upgraded to cooker some weeks ago, where I at least got some kind of fixes for the previously broken gnome packages. QA still sucks.
