  1. Take a look at man page for hier that should give you some explanation of what should live where.
  2. Is there anything pertinent from dmesg when the network locks?
  3. I went for senior - I've written some fairly complex shell scripts and debugged a couple of broken apps, but guru? Not a chance!! Write my own device drivers?? I have the upmost respect for people who can deal with such low-level coding, especially when it isn't their job!!
  4. Good distro your running there too, very solid :) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think so too, you might not have the latest and greatest versions of everything - but I can be pretty assured nothing is going to break either.
  5. I use CLI for most things, major exceptions being web browsing and email. As my work is numerical computation the codes that we run only accept text input and output text, knowledge of various CLI tools is very handy in such situations. Additionally a lot of work I do is on remote machines where it's either impossible or inconvinient to use X so I've just got into the habit of managing my files using the shell.
  6. You could do this either with a combination of ssh and sftp, or perhaps with vnc depending on how important a full graphical interface is.
  7. Did you check the tips in the thread pinned at the top of this forum? I've never tried to set this up so that's the best advice I can give - sorry. Someone else may know better :D And welcome to the board!!
  8. I started with RedHat 7.1, I guess I was 21 at the time.
  9. http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~jgh105/Screenshot.jpg It's nothing fancy, but I like it.
  10. first you'll need to configure some static networking for both machines - there are plenty of guides out there for doing that. The best way to proceed is probably to run an ssh server on the Mac (or under linux) and then use sftp to transfer files between the machines. This is quite easily set up on the Mac by going into the sharing preferences - off the top of my head the ssh server is under remote login or something similar - you'll also need to allow ssh traffic through the firewall.
  11. Most adsl routers that can connect via ethernet will work easily with linux - as DragonMage suggests getting a wireless card working on the linux box would need to be your first priority however.
  12. Are you specifically wanting a wireless setup, or will a wired router do? ebuyer do some cheap and good ethernet modem/routers.
  13. Sounds like the database you're trying to load isn't compatible with that version of P-SQL - did you check the file it suggested??
  14. I have no idea, something like a flash plugin should be able to be installed in ~/.browser/plugins or equally into a global position by root. I suppose you can argue that because you're getting a binary only package from a manufacturer (not the case with all java distros) then you can't expect freedom, but pffft... :P
  15. I understand your frustration at the current state of desktop linux, but I'm afraid that with the openess that people desire (such as the with the car analogies above) comes the fractures in development. If developer B doesn't like how developer A makes his scanner package, he goes off and makes his own - perhaps from scratch or perhaps by forking the code of developer A. He adds the features that he finds useful and will almost always work on these before he adds features for other users of his package. You end up with different working environments and different ways of doing things, and with some time and effort it is possible to roll things together such that you have a working system that does what you want. I guess you have to ask yourself what can I gain from using Linux? Personally my answer to that is a useable UNIX-like system to use on workstations and desktop machines. Then you have to ask yourself what you'll lose from moving away from a different OS such as windows. In some cases the answer to this is not a lot, to others the shift is just too big. If you like to tinker Linux is a great OS, if you want something that just works it can leave a lot to be desired! Thats a very bold claim that I don't think Linux matches, if you want superior OS design look at Plan9, security and stability in the form of OpenBSD, and for user-friendly perhaps OS X. Linux does make a decent average at them though.
  16. I got odd sound problems with doom3-demo. I found launching it with: doom3-demo +set s_driver oss sorted them out. Not sure if this will help as your error message suggests it was already trying to use OSS but I guess it may be worth a try?
  17. Is this an internal (on a LAN) IP address, or the external IP address from your ISP? If it's internal, as Ian says you just need to uncheck the dhcp box via mcc.

    DWL G650 Problems

Welcome to the board! Can you provide the error messages for the compile (either of them)? You can always put them onto a floppy disk and reboot into windows to post them (assuming your machine has a floppy drive :D ).
  19. I don't use kde anymore so I can't check this but I'm pretty sure it's in foo/kde/share/apps/kppp - the value of foo I'm also not sure on - it's the main directory for kde (/usr/share perhaps). Sorry I can't be more specific.
  20. It may also be that your ISP changes your external IP address (I have no idea what teamspeak is). If that's the case you'll probably need to contact them for a static address - which costs a little each month. The other option is to look at one of the dynanmicDNS services out there (some of which are free).
  21. Thanks, seems like macromedia contribute is the type of thing.....
  22. What exactly defines web content management?
  23. I'm not sure if you're wanting some dreamweaver-style GUI based app or just something to help edit the raw markup? If it's the latter bluefish may be of interest. It's not much help in this situation, but I really like rapidweaver on the mac, I've yet to see anything convincing like this for Linux.
  24. I'd say that was a bit of a rubbish list, but then he did put vim at the top when he meant to type emacs....
  25. Did you create the connection in MCC as LAN and not as ADSL (the latter won't work with your setup)? Are you supposed to be getting an IP address via dhcp from a router/modem or are you setting it statically? Whats the output of /sbin/ifconfig
