      Forum software upgrade   10/29/17

So you may have noticed the forum software has upgraded !!!
A few things that have changed. We no longer have community blogs (was never really used) We no longer have a portal page.
We can discuss this, and decide whether it is needed (It costs money) See this thread: Here

  1. Problem with edimax ew 7711utn rt2870sta vs rt3070

Hi Ian, Am afraid the modprobe manip doesn't work, the blacklisting was done following instructions I saw on an ubuntu forum where people where discussing the issue. There are indications here (ubuntuforums.org) that the problem is well known with the device.A shame as I chose edimax for their Linux support. It seems that there is a file somewhere which needs a bit of fiddling with but it might take me a few weeks to find it out! Stef
  2. Hi, My edimax usb wifi dongle ew7711utn( lsusb : Bus 001 Device 005: ID 7392:7711 ) used to work really well and it seems that along some upgrades (2009.1 -> 2010 I think) it stopped working. Symptom : The connection doesn't seem to work although there is a bit of signal according to the bars (1 red little bar). Drivers : The driver which use to work was rt2870sta and a new driver is now used by mandriva by default : root@localhost steph]# lsmod | grep 3070 rt3070sta 507060 1 usbcore 185744 6 rt3070sta,uhci_hcd,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd,usbhid tail -f /var/log/messages : Feb 24 20:00:46 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 Feb 24 20:00:47 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: New USB device found, idVendor=7392, idProduct=7711 Feb 24 20:00:47 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Feb 24 20:00:47 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: Product: 802.11 n WLAN Feb 24 20:00:47 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: Manufacturer: Ralink Feb 24 20:00:47 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: SerialNumber: 1.0 Feb 24 20:00:47 localhost klogd: usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice . . . 3. Mandriva 2010.0 is available

Hi, I have dowloaded the version 10.0 overnight from the official Mandriva website (via torrent). Nothing about it here nor on distrowatch, strange isn't it? Stef
  4. Hi, Just in case somebody is looking for a usb wifi dongle to complement a system, the Edimax WiFi nLite Mini-Size Wireless N USB Adapter for £ 10.99 works OTB with Mandriva 2009.1. I just installed it on my Asrock nettop Ion 330 and all it needed was the wap rpm to connect to my network. The speed is very impressive, and the "N" standard makes it quite future proof. The device is recognised as a rt2870sta and works perfectly out of the box, Highly recommended! Stef [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  5. Nvidia 185.18.29 vs Ion System

Hi, Not sure if it has been advertised here but a new driver for Nvidia GPUs is out today (for Linux users) (see http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_185.18.29.html). I installed it on my Mandriva 2009.4 PWP as the Ion is NOT recognised OOTB by Mandriva. The support for Ion chip-sets must be better as it is not recognised as "Unknown" any-more but as "Ion" quite correctly indeed... The 3D works very well, I have tested with the good old Compiz with all options on, the GPU does all the work while the atom stays on low usage. I also played with Chromium BSU and had good fun with it. I did the GLMark 0.5.2 test out of the Phoronix test suite (very good by the way) at 1280 x 1024. Result is 166 and it was quite pretty to watch. The PC I have the ion on is the ASrock 330 ION: Processor: Intel Atom CPU 330 @ 1.80GHz ( Motherboard: ASRock AMCP7A-ION, Chipset: nVidia MCP79, System Memory: 1771MB, Disk: 320GB ST9320325AS, Graphics: ION 512MB (450/800MHz) The video playing is very good, except the HD which is not as good as with the Windoze driver that I have on my first partition (using windze 7 trial version...). So nearly all good with this driver, needs to be incorporated in the ditro though as I can't see a newbie installing Nvidia drivers by hand easily... Stef
  6. Eeepc solar powered (1000H)

Hi John, You will not have a problem to do a portable/movable Photovoltaic system, it's very easy to setup, and in Australia you won't be short of Sun! Stef
  7. Eeepc solar powered (1000H)

Still Running! After my first Winter running my PC, and other appliances, from solar energy alone (let's call it Light energy, I live in the UK!), my battery is still charged! Despite the very short days during the winter, I have managed to run my EeePC from sun light alone, I only had to use my mains charger when away from home and 2 days in February when we had snow (the PC's solar panel was obstructed). Since that worked fine I took the plunge and we have converted the whole house with solar PVs on the East Roof (2kWh) and solar hot water on the west side. So far the results are excellent, I was a bit worried as we don't have a south facing roof. Despite a production less important than if it was South, we still manage 85% of the optimal production. Now since the beginning of March we have switched the boiler off and we sell 75% of the electricity produced to the grid. I also built a solar oven in which I have cooked potatoes, Moroccan couscous and baked a bread (in April!). So what's all that to do with Mandriva? Well, it's simple, Mandriva is Free (mostly) and it still shines, even i the UK! Have a nice week end, Stef
  8. Kompozer with 2009?

    Thanks Adam, :)
  9. I am afraid to say I am done with Linux...

Hi, I think is great for geeks, maybe not quite there for people who don't like to understand how things work in depth and "fix things" which don't necessaryly need it... I am very happy with Linux and quite satisfied with Mandriva, "quite" because I don't like KDE4 and therefore am not seduced by 2009 version. I have put all my systems under XFCE and it's much better now. Linux is not only the operating system of my PCs , it also is my server QNAP which is very customizable from command line, which is priceless for a server. I still have to try Mac OS but that would mean another machine, which is not possible at the moment... Stef
  10. Hi, It was raining a lot in the UK today so I though I'd do a little Howto. It's about installing virtualbox and testing Mandriva Xfce version 2009 without a CD, directly from the iso file : The Link to my site (server "ON" only 7 -> 22:00 UK time to save the planet...) Stef. :D
  11. task-xfce - whoa! [solved]

WAOWWWWWW I LOOOOOVVVE the dog! But the desktop is nice too! Stef
  12. Hi, I did a little howto for an informative conky on the Eeepc 1000H on mandriva 2009, follow the link... [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. task-xfce - whoa! [solved]

Hi Chris, Good choice! I stopped using KDE gradually a year ago when I started using my first eeepc. I now use only xfce, even on my desktop, very fluent, very fast , try thunar and mousepad and compare the starting timing compared to konqueror and kwrite, there is quite a lot of difference. As for the gkrellm equivalent, try conky, i've done a little howto there but there is more complete documentation everywhere on the net... Stef
  14. Hi Lex, do you mean how fast is it or how big is the install? I love your site, very good humor! Stef
