    Konsole help

when you went to "settings->scrollbar" do you not have options to for the scrollbar to be on the left, right, or hide? they should be there. if not, then that one is a mystery to me. Chris
  2. i've heard (read) some good things about the aboved link (Tiramisu).........but....... the free download trial version of that is basically "teaseware". from what i've read, the free download will tell you if the recovery is actually possible, then if possible, let you recover 5 files. that may be enough for your friends needs, iphitus.......maybe not. in a nut shell, any type of data recovery from a crippled disc is gonna cost money, & lots of it, either from a professional data recovery service or from an app that you can buy to do the job. back up, back up, back up, & keep the anti virus up to date if you use Windows. Chris
  3. scoopy........... i found these references via a Google KIOexec Search . have a look at This One in particular & see if it makes sense. something about not being able to read certain characters (* wildcards). are there any files on the CD that use strange characters or wildcards in the file names? just a shot in the dark........ Chris
  4. i went into IRC channel #kde & asked about the grid settings. according to the KDE guru's in there, the grid alignment spacing is hard coded into KDE & can't be changed. about the best you can hope for is arranging your icons by hand to the desired spacing & not using the align to grid option. Chris
  5. when you say it is locked, how do you mean? please explain.......... are you trying to update via CLI? when you do urpmi.update -a, are you getting an error message? if so, what is it? or, does update just start hanging on a source? or..... are you trying to update via MCC->software media manager? again, if so, what error(s) are you getting? without knowing the specifics, here's a few things you could try........ in terminal, as root, run the command top. (just type top, then hit enter) it will show a list of running processes. if it shows urpmi or mandrake update is running, kill it. just type the letter k & it will ask you which PID number to kill. if the top command doesn't show it, then try ps -aux & again look for those processes & kill them. if an instance isn't already running & urpmi stops & just hangs when it gets to an update source, try eliminating that source. i've run into that several times. if an update source is unavailable, sometimes urpmi will just hang at that source. if those things don't apply, then method number 3 is to simply reboot. (yes, i know, you shouldn't have to do that in Linux, but contrary to popular opinion, sometimes you have to) a reboot might very easily reset things. if that wouldn't work, then you could try the following command in terminal as root....... rpm --rebuilddb that will rebuild your rpm database. sometimes it can become corrupted & that should fix it. Chris
  6. hmmmm.......i don't know where you are or where you shop, but 700 meg CDRW's can be found most anywhere. at least i can get them everywhere here in Pennsylvania, USA. any of the major computer supply chains, KMarts & WallMarts, Radio Shack, record stores, etc. they all have them. as for the CD burning app question, if you don't have K3B at your disposal, i'd go with XCDRoast. it does ISO's quite nicely. just choose "create cd/dvd", "master tracks", uncheck "display directories only", select your ISO image(s), set any options you want, "write tracks". you can also create your own ISO's via the same controls. Chris
  7. here's the best one, hands down, that i've found so far........ Kover i've tried several........OpenOffice templates, KCDLabel, GCover........this has them all beat. if you use KDE, it's especially sweet 'cause it integrates with it perfectly, uses KDE icons & themes, etc. you can connect to the cddb, & there are several jewel box styles to choose from, configurable fonts & colours, copy & paste for CD cover pictures, etc. try it, you'll love it. the only thing you should know, which the "readme/install" info don't tell you, to have full KDE integration, make sure you direct the install path to the directory where your KDE is installed. (IE: ./configure --path= /kde/install/location) Chris
  8. here's a few places to look, if you haven't already........ go to /home/(username)/desktop. thats the directory that contains your desktop icons. there should be a text file in there called "directory". (it may be a hidden file called .directory. not in front of the linux box right now to double check) that file contains the names of your desktop icons & their x= y= placement. on my KDE desktop, i have my icons arranged manually, so as not to get in the way of my wallpaper. but i'm thinking that if you use the "align to grid" option, there might be some parameters in that file for the grid that you could tweak? also, you could always check in your /home/(username)/.kde/** for a similar file. AFAIK, there's no point & click quick option to attain what you want. Chris
  9. as an alternative, if you don't wanna be bothered with connecting to the internet manually (with either DrakConnect or the CLI commands) you can always use MCC (Mandrake Control Center)->system->services & put a check in the "internet" box, click "apply" & "ok", to have your connection start during boot up. Chris
  10. it's cap sensitive & no spaces between......... adsl-start adsl-status adsl-stop just like that. Chris
  11. take a look at THIS THREAD . go to page 2, near the bottom & look for VILLA21's post where it mentions creating a sym linking a libstdc file. it pertains to Firefox, but people have commented it works for Moz too. Chris
  12. another question............ can you/should you leave your /home/.kde directory in place? and, if so, does KDE3.2 retain & use your old personalized KDE settings? for inquiring minds that want to know.......... Chris
  13. java in konqueror is easier........... (NOTE: make sure Konqueror is not running while you do this) open KCC (KDE Control Center aka. Configure Your Desktop)->web browsing->java & javascript. where it says "path to java executable or 'java'", point the path to the java executable. for instance, my path looks like this.......... /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/bin/java depending on your version of java & the location where it's installed, your path may differ slightly. the part that matters is the last 2 parts of the path. you should end up at /bin/java. so, if your path differs, it may be something like........ /path/toyourjava/j2reblahblah/BIN/JAVA click apply, fire up Konqueror, test with some java enabled web sites. Chris
  14. hmmm....... as far as i know, there isn't any thing like what you want available. i could be wrong though. i never really thought about such an app/or connection method. i Googled a bit for ya, but came up with nuthin' short of making a desktop shortcut to KPPP, but that doesn't help much. i suppose you could always write some kind of script, make it executable, then make that as a shortcut, but you still wouldn't get any minimized icon in the tray. so, sorry, that's about as much input that i can offer right now. Chris
  15. mandrake control center (MCC for short) and look under one of the menus for DrakConnect. (not at my MDK box right now but i think it's under "system". choose the "wizard" option, fill in the blanks as you go (isp provider, connection type, user name, password, etc.) apply settings, connect. note, sometimes for whatever reason, you have to choose connect, then disconnect, then connect again once you have your settings in place. to have internet connect on start up, in MCC, go to system->services & check internet at start up box. to connect manually, in terminal as root type the following..... to connect: adsl-start to check status: adsl-status to disconnect: adsl-stop that should get ya goin'. Chris
  16. try right clicking on kicker & choose menu editor. choose the "menu style" button & check if the "all applications (Mandrake Menu) option is selected. if not, select it & save. you may have to restart KDE for settings to take effect. Chris
  17. even with integrated sound, there has to be a sound cable from your cd/dvd drives to your mobo for the sound to work. i have integrated sound here, too, but i still need to have a sound cable from my CD drive to the mobo for my CD sound to work. so, again, open your case & check if there is a sound cable hooked to your CDRW drive. Chris
  18. if you mean a sound cable, it's easy enough to check if you have one. (though i don't understand why you wouldn't) just do what they say in the link you posted. if for some reason you don't, just go to your local computer supply store & pick one up. they only cost a few dollars & can be installed in a minute. just 2 plugs to plug in. other than that, i'm stumped as to why the sound isn't working with the cdrw. but the more i think about it, it could be you do have a sound cable but it's plugged into the dvd drive. if that's the case, you could test the theory by unplugging the cable from the dvd & plugging it into the cdrw & see if you get sound then. if you do, before you go get yourself another cable, make sure there's an extra connector plugin on your sound card for it to be plugged in to. if not, i THINK you can get a cable splitter of some sort or a 2 in 1 sound cable (2 plugs on 1 end for the 2 drives, 1 plug on the other end for the sound card). Chris
  19. you could always try (if you haven't already) booting from MDK CD1, hit F1, type rescue at the prompt, hit enter, then choose the reinstall boot loader option, but don't use a /boot partition. put lilo in the mbr instead of a /boot partition. Chris

    KDE broken

where'd you get the updates from? an mdk update source? hmmmm....... i'm on mdk9.2 using kde3.1.3. my versions of the kde packages you listed are..... kdebase-3.1.3-79.1.92mdk kdelibs-common-3.1.3-35.1.92mdk kdeutils-3.1.3-20mdk you don't have the complete package versions listed. unless somebody comes up with something else, you might wanna try this........... go to mcc->remove software & remove the updates. then, go right into install software & install those packages from the mdk9.1 cd's & see if you still have the same problems. if not, then the updates are indeed screwing up KDE somehow. Chris
  21. ok, i don't use Firefox (Mozilla1.6 here, but mostly Opera). so, without knowing the inner workings of Firefox, i can't offer anymore advice other than pointing you HERE if you haven't looked there already. it's a Firefox page with instructions on how to install various plugins (flash, java, etc.). maybe that'll help ya out. Chris
  22. just ignore the bad signature message. the packages will install fine without the GPG keys. Chris
  23. dependency hell...........ah, yes........ ok, do this.......... go here to Easy URPMI & set yourself up with some external rpm sources. follow the instructions there. it tells you how to do it. get yourself (at least) a contrib source, but it wouldn't hurt to put in a main source & external source. just be careful with cooker sources. they can (& usually do) contain a lot of unstable apps. after you set up sources, go to mcc->install software & do a search for the packages you're looking for. chris
  24. cd4???!!!! which version of mdk are you using? 10.0? if so, & you don't have cd4, you can go HERE & HERE to get what you need & to search for any other rpm's you might need. or, dload cd4. :P Chris
  25. try installing aumix. it's on one of the mdk cd's. open mcc->install software & type aumix in the search box. install it, then run it & adjust the settings. if it doesn't automatically put a shortcut in kicker->multimedia->sound (it should) the just run it from terminal by typing.......... aumix hit enter Chris
