  1. Can you post screenshots so we can see what the problem looks like exactly? I mean, I have a feeling this could be Xft or freetype issue.
  2. Well, if you install the binary rpms used for cooker, I am 90% sure that it will require other cooker rpms to satisfy its dependencies. By the time you satisfy all the dependencies, your mandrake will be pretty much cooker, not 9.0. Of course, you can download the src.rpm from the cooker then rebuild the rpms so that the resulting binary rpms will match your 9.0 libraries. Since I don't have an uber computer to recompile about 80 something MB of rpms, I think I'll wait for someone to do it for me, like texstar or a mandrake clubber :)
  3. I think we should have an MUB FAQ to answer this type of questions :) For information about texstar, goto http://www.pclinuxonline.com He basically packages a ton of mandrake based rpms that are very useful for those people want to get the newest packages but not crazy enough to install cooker :) here's the page of his rpm depository http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...ontrib/texstar/ You can install synaptic which is basically an apt-get frontend for rpm based distro from his site.. he doesn't update his urpmi section since he hosed his mandrake 9 computer last year losing his gpg sigs. As far as KDE3.1 final is concerned.. wait..I think it is just out in cooker. I am not sure how compatible the cooker packages now to regular 9.0, but you can always try to install them.
  4. Take a look at this link http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=1900 Hope it works.
  5. How did you rip and encode to ogg anyway, what software? I mean.. I made some oggs at CR 160 kbps and it actually sounded a bit better than mp3 ripped via lame using CR 160 kbps, all using grip ripper. Maybe it's the player itself that have trouble decoding the ogg files?
  6. Hmm.. checking the TuxGames page about MOHAA, it costs 45 bux for the linux version. That's kind of a bit much for just the installers isn't it? Or does it include the windows version, with the linux installers?
  7. Hmm.. since I don't play that kind of games, how much is it? I am planning to buy the game and give it to my friend who is going to have an experimental linux server.. Let him choke on his words since he said that linux is not a gaming machine yet (he has a windows version of MOHAA but cannot play it due to sucky vid card).
  8. No rpms for mandrake yet, but I give it a week before Texstar or Mandrake to create rpms for my mandrake 9.0. Should be similar specwise since RC6 rpms are working fine for me so far.
  9. I tried the final version of Staroffice 6.0 a few months back (linux version too) thanks to a friend of mine who works at sun. Frankly, since OO.o provides about 90% of the functionality of SO and the 10% of the mission functionality I don't use or I don't care about, I see no reason wasting hd space for SO (well at the time, my hd space is at a premium). This is what I know so far about differences of OO.o and SO. 1. Different spellchecking engine 2. Additional fonts 3. Adabas database 4. Maybe a better filter for some file formats. I think file compatibility wise, they are the same. They both open MS office documents handily, a file saved in OO.o native format (xml) can be opened in SO pretty much 100% and vice versa. The licensing for SO I think is that you can install a paid copy of SO in 5 computers (nicer than MS Office that's for sure), although I am not sure whether you need to buy a separate license for windows version. Anyway, if you want to support mandrake, get the club membership instead. That way mandrake get 100% of your money instead of some odd percent when buying a powerpack. Of course, you may need the disks and manuals instead of downloading them from the net, so powerpack is more handy if you don't have broadband or you are just too lazy to wait for downloading :)
  10. Well.. since mandrake is geared toward desktop, a bit of beauty sometimes needs to overcome some flexibility. But I kinda agree that the lilo boot screen should have a "Press escape to see the command line lilo option" writing in it.. kinda similar to a computer POST screen "press F1/F10/esc to enter bios setup." That would be a useful feature.
  11. Bah.. I entered my place (Hayward, CA) and it basically sits in the middle of a crowd. Anyway, isn't it interesting that alhtough basically Americans and Europeans have the most points, the third most crowded place is in Western Asia? I would've thought East Asia would take the cake.
  12. From the mandrake cooker mailing list, there seems to be an experimental kernel out for mandrake 9.0 that supposedly fix the supermount problems. The files can be found here http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~quintela/updates/9.0/ I tried the kernel and it seems to be ok so far.. but I have to make a disclaimer that if it breaks your system, don't blame me :)
  13. Are you using the source code version of amavis from http://www.amavis.org ? Or are you using the mandrake contrib rpm?
  14. Heh.. the people in my bible study class was talking about this worm this morning.. I basically laughed since that worm affects MS-SQL, and I am so safe and sound with my fuzzy linux box.. :)
  15. Well.. it may be poor coding to you, but you have to remember that menudrake can make changes to the menu system to ALL the Desktop Environment that mandrake includes, not just kde or gnome. In fact, as a test, I tried making change of a menu using menudrake (adding gnomesword icon and put it in edutainment section of the menu) and save the change for all environment. When I checked, the menu is available in kde, gnome, icewm, and xfce (haven't checked other DE yet). Now considering the many ways the window managers have their own menuing system, it is no wonder it takes so long to load and save the menu to your own liking. I think that to do that require more of a brute force of programming method instead of finesse. Anyway, I think menudrake is a crutch. A very good one but a crutch nonetheless. The faster way to edit your menu is to edit it either using a text editor to edit the required files (something only people very knowledgable would do) or to use the windowsmanager's own menuediting program (which can be tedious if you are using multiple DE). But then again, mandrake is designed for easy for newbies, not professionals. :) Oh, btw.. menudrake is slow for me, too. That's why I only use mandrake rpms that I know put the required icons and menus instead of requiring me to add them manually. But saving and loading menus using menudrake only takes a minute at most on my computer (spec in sig). How many windows manager do you install?
  16. Oy, it shouldn't do that if your urpmi database is up to date. Anyway, let's do add the contrib to your urpmi database by typing this in console as root. (all that in one line) urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.lip6.fr/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.0/contrib/RPMS/ with ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz It will download the listing of the software in there and put it in your urpmi database, after it's all finished all you have to do is type urpmi d4x or go to the software installation section in mandrake control center and find d4x. It should download all the libraries needed automatically, or at least you only need to insert the cd needed to get the libraries installed. And if you really need other mirrors to put in your urpmi database, go to http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php to add other things such as texstar mirror, mandrake club mirrors, plf mirrors, etc. etc.
  17. Lookie here, another nation joins the fold. Seems that South Africa is tired of spending billions of (whatever the money is called over there) for M$ and switch to opensource software. http://www.bday.co.za/bday/content/direct/...-6099-0,00.html Anyway, any comment from our resident South African?
  18. Hmm.. my 9.0 with Texstar's KDE 3.1 RC6 looks just like that if I use keramik and the crystal icon theme. I guess it's the Xft library that makes the difference.
  19. What version of mandrake are you using right now? If you are using mandrake 9 and you have the approprriate bandwidth, you might as well put texstar's place in your urpmi database and urpmi the sucker. The XFt library and other things basically will only improve your fonts. Anyway, this is a link for the older version of d4x, it should work nicely since it is compiled for mandrake 9 ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/9.0/...3-1mdk.i586.rpm

    Nvidia drivers

It's a known problem with the newest NVidia driver. With the newest, you gained 3d speed and the newest version of OpenGL support, but the 2d suffers. I went back to version 3132 after finding out that version 4191 makes my 3d screensavers really really blocky.
  21. http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...2-1tex.i586.rpm That's a prebuilt downloader4x rpm for mandrake 9.0.
  22. I think the problem is that there are not enough plugins installed in your xine installation. There are many more plugins needed other than xine-plugins. My advice is to install the newest version of xine everything from plf. They may be many but it sure beats spending time finding out which package is for which plugins. Here is a listing of my working xine. xine_dmd_plugin-1.0.7-1plf xine-dxr3-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-arts-1-0.beta2.1plf libxine1-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-ui-0.9.17-1mdk xine-win32-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-d5d-0.2.7-2plf libxine0-0.9.13-8plf xine-alsa-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-faad-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-plugins-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-dvdnav-1-0.beta2.1plf libxine1-devel-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-esd-1-0.beta2.1plf <xinetd-2.3.7-3mdk> xine_d4d_plugin-0.3.2-2plf xine-aa-1-0.beta2.1plf libxine1-docs-1-0.beta2.1plf xine-ui-aa-0.9.17-1mdk
  23. Hmm.. slackware is not that hard.. not as easy to use as mandrake, but not that hard at all. Anyway, that call is not to abandon mandrake. It's actually the call for the community to create a Mandrake Non Profit organization in order to support the distro if mandrakesoft really goes under. I think it's a good one.. Kinda like the preparation for this board move from the club-nihil just in case. And in this board's case, the move is justified since last time I checked, club-nihil is dead / or on life support.
  24. Not a hard link really, just some discussion in pclinuxonline about people considering that. And then there is this link. http://ben.reser.org/rants/ that calls for a proposal for a nonprofit style of mandrake community. But I have a pretty high hope that if mandrakesoft dies, the community will pick it up again..
  25. Still 10 more days left in January.. come on.. let my prediction be right.. (still eyeing that GeForce 4)
