  1. I also have an internal zip drive and get the same error when I boot. Been getting it for several months now, but it doesn't seen to be hurting anything. I read some place that if you boot with a zip disk in the drive you won't get the error.
  2. I've been using a Palm IIIxe for almost 3 years now. In fact I'm on my second IIIxe - I plum wore the first one out. I picked a new unit up last month for US$59 from logicalplus.com. I use it for calender, phone book and to-do list and it fits the bill perfectly. I sync it with my Linux system using J-Pilot. The only down side is the slow transfer of data using the serial interface. I've been using it with Mandrake Linux since 8.1. I thought about moving over to a Zaurus or other device but can't see a good reason to do it right now.
  3. I had the same problem a while back and was able to solve it by adding the line nvidia to my /etc/conf file Disclaimer: I'm at work right now and don't have access to my system so the above is all from memory! check out the last article in the post: http://tinyurl.com/mbrh
  4. This may be moot with the new Nvidia drivers coming out today, but I had the same problem as Michel where I had to type modprobe nvidia before starrtx. I solved this by adding nvidia to my /etc/modules file.
  5. I will also be shopping for a new printer soon and am seriously considering moving up to a laser printer for the reasons already mentioned. Check out http://www.linuxprinting.org for lots of useful information on selecting a printer to use with Linux. http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html has some specific reccomendations for brands and models. regards, bnc --
  6. Gotcha. I installed SuSE on another system and it came with k3b which I liked alot. I then tried to install k3b on my Mandrake system but had trouble getting it to work. At the time I ran out time to troubleshoot it, but now I'll go back and give it another try. Thanks for your help. bnc --
  7. DragonMage Thanks! I installed k3b a while back (about the same time I replaced my dying CD-R/RW drive) but couldn't get it to work. k3b must have modified my /etc/fstab file and caused the problem. I rem'ed out the last line in my /etc/fstab file and now everything seems to be back to normal. BTW, how did you know it was k3b that added the last line to my /etc/fstab? Thanks once again. bnc --
  8. Yes I've been able to burn CDs with no problem. But I have a question - What exactly does Supermount do? From the reading I've done it looks like Supermount allows you to access removable devices like CDs and floppies without mounting them first and not having to unmount them after you're done. Is this correct? If so, I can see that it would save but I really don't mind having to do this. Is there any way to uninstall supermount? Or perhaps to edit my /etc/fstab file to permanently disable it? Thanks - bnc --
  9. Thanks Ixthusdan, scouring the newsgroups I had an idea it had something to do with supermount. Here's what's in my /etc/fstab: /dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hdb6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0,unhide 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /mnt/zip supermount dev=/dev/sda4,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target2/lun0/cd /cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec,unhide 0 0 Thanks once again - bnc --
  10. Hello - I'm running Mandrake 9.0, and just after I installed a new Sony 52/24/52 IDE CD-R/RW drive some wierd things started to happen. When I check to see if a package is installed by either using the Software Management utility in the Mandrake Control Center or by going to a terminal and typing urpmq packagename, the CDROM drive starts to spin and the process hangs. If I go to eject the CD by pushing the button on the drive, the tray extends but closes right away before I have a chance to do anything. Sometimes typing the command eject from a terminal window halts the process. Usually after a few minutes I can get it to stop by pushing the eject button on the drive. If I put a bogus data CD or a music CD in the drive first before I type urpmq packagename the process continues like it should. I'm new at this and I'm pretty baffeled, can anyone help? Thanks in advance. bnc --
  11. I've had 2 HDs on my PCs for about a year now and it's worked quite well. I recently built a new PC and installed win 98 and Mandrake 9.0 on seperate drives. The new machine has 2 - 40 GB Maxtor drives, one for Linux and one for windows. Both drives are on the first IDE channel, the windows drive is the master and appears as the C drive in windows and the Linux Drive is the slave. I use LILO to choose which OS to boot. My CD burner and IDE Zip drive are on the second IDE channel. I've had good luck with Maxtor drives and personally would stick with them. The retail Maxtor drives come with Maxblast, a handy utility to help troubleshoot and set up your drives. I think you can also download Maxblast from the web site. Good luck
  12. Thanks afunke and cannonfodder. I uninstalled bootsplash (with urpme bootsplash) and it it gave me the text screen on boot up that I was looking for. Many thanks, bnc --
  13. Afunke - Thanks for your help, but I don's have a "install=..." line in my lilo.conf file, should I add the one you suggest? Here's what's in my /etc/lilo.conf file: boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map vga=normal default=linux keytable=/boot/us.klt prompt timeout=300 message=/boot/message menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" vga=788 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux-nonfb root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=failsafe root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe devfs=nomount hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" read-only other=/dev/hda1 label=windze table=/dev/hda other=/dev/fd0 label=floppy unsafe Any ideas what I can do to get a text screen when I boot? Thanks - bnc --
  14. Cannonfodder - I guess I'm looking to uninstall bootsplash. When my machine boots I'd like to see just text over a blank background as I had with Mandrake 8.1 which I booted from floppy. Any idea how to do that? Thanks - bnc --
  15. Hello - I'm using LILO to boot and I'm stuck booting with the graphical menu even though I tried switching to text using the Boot Config utility in the Mandrake Control Center. I should note that the machine shuts down with a text menu, but doesn't boot this way. Can I edit lilo.conf or another file to achieve this? Thanks in advance. bnc --
