satelliteuser083
On the Skype for Linux FAQ site, Mandrake/Mandriva is not included in the list of Linux distributions that Skype runs on. The site was last updated on Dec 20, 2005; does anyone know if, in the meantime, Mandriva has been adopted?
tyme
If you go to the Skype download page for Linux there is a link to download a version for mandriva 10.1 and newer. it was last updated on january 9th, so the answer to your question is yes ;)
wilcal
does anyone know if, in the meantime, Mandriva has been adopted? I have found the Skype RPM install for Mandriva to be extremely hardware sensitive. Before you install the Skype RPM make absolutely sure that your sound system is completely operational. Do things like record and play back short verbal messages using either the KDE or Gnome Sound Recorder applications. I also make sure that that which is recorded by the Sound Recorder is playable, cleanly, with Totem or Beep. Also a trap you can fall into is you do the RPM install restart X and run Skype successfully then fails on the second attempt. If you open things like the Gnome System Monitor you'll find Skype lurking in the background still running but not on the desktop. Use the Skype ID: "echo123" to test your connection. Use the ALSA Sound Mixer. Sometimes you'll need the +20db mic boost to get enough gain. IMO Skype is a work in progress with a LOT of work still to be done especially in the Linux world. I ending up having to run it on one of my older machines P600 - Test System ----------------------------- Mandy 2006 Pentium III (Coppermine), 600Mhz, 256Kb Cache 440BX MoBo DIMM1 128MB, DIMM2 128MB = 256MB ATI Rage 128 GL AGP 1x/2x 32MB All-In-Wonder TV Tune/out SoundBlaster Live (snd-emu10k1 driver) USB Intel 82371AB PIIX4 D-Link DFE 530 TX+ Fast Ethernet DVD-ROM (hda) Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-2500 CD-RW (hdb) Sony CRX140E Floppy 1.44MB KingWin HD Rack/Tray subsystem (Multiple HD's) Boot Sequence - Floppy -> DVD-ROM -> HD where it finally stablized and fully understood the platform it was on. I suspect that because of the for sure real Sound Blaster Live board.
arctic
Thank you for sharing your experience. I was considering to try skype and I guess I will give it a try, but I will make sure that I do some sound recording and playback before finally using it, as you suggested. SilverSurfer60
Yes, Skype does work and quite well on MD2006. I have been using it for a few months now. If you follow the README and INSTALL docs that are included you shouldn't have much trouble gettng it working. As with a number of apps in the linux community Skype is somewhat experimental so you should not be surprised that there will be bugs, but I have been using it with a bluetooth headset & btsco, all of which took quite a bit of tinkering and research. There is plenty of write-ups on the web if you search for them. Good luck.
superpenguin79
I've used Skype on a Mac and it is great. Very good to know it will work with some config. on a Mandrake box also. :D
satelliteuser083
I've just downloaded skype-1.3.0.53-1mdk.i586.rpm from the site recommended by 'tyme' on Mar 13 2006 (many thanks, BTW :P ). However, I can't remember how to install the app; can someone help me out? Thanks.
Mhn
You should be able to do it by dubble-clicking on the icon, and then insert the root-password when prompted.
isadora
There is an installation description on the same site as where you downloaded the thing. Edited December 11, 2006 by isadora

SilverSurfer60
Since my last post on this subject I have dumped Skype, for the pure reason a lot of my acquaintances had other networks for communication ( fwd.pulver.com amongst others ) and I could not connect with skype. So I opted for Ekiga from ekiga.net Now I can connect to quite a few different networks and ekiga was written for linux. Not as fancy as skype but it works for me. Cheap landline calls globally. Can't fault it really. :P

SilverSurfer60
The 'problem' with Ekiga is that it is not compatible with Skype. I'd like to turn that on it's head so that the problem with Skype is that it is not compatible with anything but Skype. Market leader I will agree, they started the whole thing off. I think. I might be mistaken though so I'll shut up at that. ;)
emmanuel_uk
So you use linux, not the market leader? Using the market leader bec it is the market leader is not necessariy the best option I have heard that Chinese had reversed engineered the skype protocol
