  1. Hmm... what is the catch? don't mean to sound pessemistic, but usually when something is supposed to be "Free" and it is associated with the word "music" the RIAA will come knocking down the door... :D this would be a very good concept though if it was able to scour the web for Indie releases that are posted for free on a server or something to bring them to one portal. Or is this the concept and I am totally missing it? :P sounds cool in theory though.. :) ahh... never mind... I get it. You pay for the option to be able to "save" and own the license to the track. :D Technically though, this doesn't prevent users from streaming through some sort of recording device in their soundcard though... I guess thats true for any streaming media though now days...
  2. Hmm... was just perusing latest distro's and found a couple distro's that you can install via flash drive... interesting. I even found a few you can fit on a floppy. I am thinking I may be able to either use the box, or destroy it with one of those distro's... :D if there is a will, there is a way...
  3. nice, good to know for when I finally get a linux box up and running atleast... :D
  4. Thanks for the advice guys, however did I fail to mention that the machine currently has a distro of Win. 98 on it which is not the easiest to get to jive with newer network cards and drivers anyhow.... :D Yeah, could go with a i486 distro, but I think honestly I rather chuck this machine and get one that can handle 2006 from the get go and not cause so many headaches.. I am telling you... this machine has been almost as much grief as my upstairs neighbors that have flooded my livingroom like 10 times since august just to give y'all a comparison... :D :D
  5. I've used Skype on a Mac and it is great. Very good to know it will work with some config. on a Mandrake box also. :D
  6. so I finally get ready to install Mandrake on my box this weekend, I have researched this site and others extensively, even took a course on setup, installation, and config. through my work for free, and had the boot disc ready to do a network install... and I discover that the box does not have a network card installed.... so I do happen to have a spare network card laying around un-opened, but realize that it came with a cd to install the drivers... hence forth my whole initiative to install linux on this box via network anyways caus I don't have a working cdrom drive on the machine.... I am begining to think that it would be easier to throw this box out of a 10 story building and let it smash into a dumpster and go look in other peoples dumpsters or something and find a new box that is a 466mhz or something like that which has a working cdrom and network card already... the main issue is that I could even install the network card if I could find out what to copy off the cd's onto floppy..etc.. but what a pain this is for a machine that I believe only has 64mb of ram to begin with.... anyways..... bottom line is that the forces are against me and don't want me to be able to setup my Linux box at this point and time.... :P
  7. gotcha, more simple than I was thinking... :D I will have to go find a mirror with the img files for a boot floppy for 2006 today I suppose then caus I have no clue what mirror the other img files came from originally.. lol Atleast I know that I can download those on a pc instead of a 2gb dl for the iso image to my mac and having it error out..... :D thanks for the help
  8. ahh, so I don't have to point it to a specific mirror and my network card should auto-become available for usage and surfing to the mirror? That sounds too easy man.. :D I will try it with an old machine that I have and see how it goes this weekend. If it makes me point to an FTP mirror, do I just point it to the iso image for the install that I want to work with, or is there another file that starts the setup/install sort of like an exe file in Windows? Thanks for the help
  9. yep, got hold of a boot.img and ramdisk.img file to make my boot disk so far. I got hold of the bamboo ones caus I have an older machine, or would this not matter with Linux? I think I got the part down using rawrite to make the floppy, but will this allow me to go GUI or text base in order to get my lan up and running to get on the ftp server? or am I jumping too far ahead? hehe Also, if I understand correctly the network.img file you are mentioning will launch the setup for mandrake correct? Sorry for all the questions, but I have been a Win user for too long... I can pick up most things pretty quick, but for some reason these img files are baffling on a first time install... maybe I should just download a cd image and see if I have an extra drive laying around that I could pop into that machine to install with. The rom drive is broken on that machine, which is why I am looking at installing via FTP also.. :) thanks
  10. Just out of curiousity, what image would one need to do something of this sort? I am thinking about installing Mandriva on a 2nd machine now which is very old (Win 98 is the current image and the hardware is probably just as old) just to play with caus I would like to try it before I re-image my main machine. :D If you guys have gotten it to work, could you please let me know details? Thanks
  11. I take it this means I haul the machine to dl to XP Pro... :D I do have a very archaic machine sitting around that I could install an older version from a network mount also, but I was hoping to try the newest image.. if anyone has any suggestions that is a mac user, I would appreciate it. Thanks
  12. Hello folks, having some trouble downloading the i586 dvd iso image on a mac for some reason. I have tried downloading through browsers, a couple of mac based FTP apps, and nothing seems to cooperate. It errors out at the end of the download and says "a network connection error has occured" which pops up in the Mac download manager. The FTP's just simply timed out... I have also tried from 3 different FTP mirrors at different times of the day... Worst case scenerio I could always move a tower to connect it hard wired into the LAN and download in XP, but I would like to use the Mac so I do not have to move a million things if possible.... :D outside of downloading the image, are there any good bets at getting hold of a free copy of the dvd that you all might suggest? Thanks
  13. Just wondered if anyone knew of a good spot that lists best compato wireless cards for I586 2006 please? I need one that is PCI based. thanks
  14. Thanks, I found out that the GAtech FTP sites DVD iso image is corrupted after further investigation and setup to download from the Indiana one instead. :D I have yet to check it when I get back to my machine, but I am fairly certain it should hopefully work. lol Thanks for the info about partitioning also, I was thinking I could use XP's disk util, but of course I forgot that Windows doesn't like to play nice with other stuff you are trying to do outside of it... Someone else also suggested http://zeleps.com/ to re-size and play with the partitions. By the time I am said and done playing with partitions though, I might need to invest in that larger 250gb hard drive that I have been eying for a while... :D Thanks again for the input.
