bvc
...have something like windows update where you can download patches and stuff or what? Mandrake Control Center>Software Management> Mandrake Update don't bother til the 12th though because most of the mirrors are wacko right now over a ML-10-CE>ML-10-Stable source tree change. If you have 9.2 you could give it a go.
brkville42NY
Anything as big as a Linux has patches. So the answer is...duh. OUT
Ixthusdan
All humor aside, the only dumb question on this particular board is the one that won't be asked! Anyone coming to linux from windex is going to not know that the computer world functions on patches and updates, because windex acts like they thought of it all. Almost every os has an internet update/patch strtategy, including our favorite linux distro's. :D
scoopy
but also remember... -> our distro, doesn't hijack our web browser and take you to their website everytime they feel like it -> you don't need to be running a certain browser to get the updates -> you don't need to try and understand those obscure "Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles" -> AND there are NO secrets hidden within the updates :P
aRTee
But you do need to setup your update repository for urpmi, currently some urpmi repositories are not working; some update repositories are up though, as are some main and contrib repositories; next to that, plf is up. Read the info about urpmi the command that does all; as bvc indicated, you can use a graphical wizard too, easy for browsing and finding the name of that program you want to try out. I have some links on my site about urpmi, you can search this forum too. Remember, the most important thing about security is to actually take care of it. liquidzoo
It's MandrakeLinux's package management system. You set up your sources, then either open up the Install Software gui, or su to root in a command line and type urpmi packagename to install new software. Viper_Maniac
So that has to be set up before I do the Mandrake Update?
bvc
The Software Management utilities you find in mcc are gui frontends to urpmi urpme urpmf urpmq urpmi.addmedia urpmi.update and other commands. Append --help or man before them in a terminal for details....use them as root ....examples man urpmi urpmi --help
bvc
So that has to be set up before I do the Mandrake Update? yes/no click on mandrake update and it will attempt to find a mirror for a 'update source' so that you can then 'update'.
