  1. Check your Session Manager settings in your Control Centre (kcontrol)--> KDE Components--> Session Manager.
  2. To use konquror, you need to start it in root mode. Type: kdesu konqueror. Or you can do this via the Mandrake Control Centre. Do Alt & F2 now type: mcc. Go to Boot--> Setup how the system boots--> Click next, now select the opsys you want to start first, select modify then select default.
  3. Thanks for the reply paul, I have changed my /etc/exports & /etc/fstab to the same settings as yours but I still get a permission denied when trying to write to the mounted nfs. A couple of questions: Does it matter that the nfs drive is vfat? and when I ls -ls the mounted nfs, it has, owner: 500 and group: 500, I have no such user on my system.
  4. Some assistance please. I've created a rw nfs export, but when I mount it locally I can't write to the directory. I've googled around and searched this forum to no avail. Can anyone tell me what is missing from this fstab entry to facilitate local writing? Thanks.
  5. The last time I saw something like that my flash plugin was the culprit.
  6. This is not gui related but, when using the KsmartTray widget can you add a function, whereby the user can specify how frequently repo's are polled for updates?
  7. I am deffo no fan of Winblow$ but with PClinuxOS they have gone for a nice standardized look to 'ease' the transistion from one opsys to another (which is what you want for your friend isn't it?), it is robust enough and a pleasure to use. The look and feel can be changed once the user is familiar with where to find things. The most important thing is 'can they navigate around and use the system' to get the results they want, with little or no fuss. Linux is only the kernel, what they will be looking at is GNU.
  8. PClinuxOS, it's a fork of Mandriva and very reliable. Check it out here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/
  9. Compiling KrossWordPlayer. And for those who wish to get past the extra ; make error when compiling KrossWordPlayer, do the following: Go into the krosswordplayer folder, find this file: QzCrossWord.cpp, open it up in Kate (or in your favourite editor). Perform a search and put this in the searchbox }; when found delete the ; save the file and re-run make . When installed the executable is located here: /usr/local/kde/bin Thanks neddie for the pointer.
  10. Try using Beryl to select a suitable window manager. i.e. Aquamarine etc.
  11. Use the Easy-Urpmi link (top right), follow the instructions. When completed you will be able to download and install all you need from the net.
  12. What did you do to resolve the extra ; ?
  13. First thing: It's never a good idea to compile software as root, only the make install command should be executed as the root user. Second thing: There's no configure script. Just run make as a normal user then switch to root and do make install.
  14. I don't know about that. However I do believe Linspire has spectacularly fallen on their own sword. From the start they had the ambition to be the Micro$oft of the open source community. I only await the news that they have faded away into total insignificance.
  15. The end result is the same, the difference is you choose to navigate through the kmenu & sub menus :D
  16. To do this graphically. Alt & F2 type mcc enter root password, go to Network & Internet--> Manage host definitions.
  17. Having read the info on the wiki page, If we are to believe it runs Xandros, then I see no reason to doubt it will run Mandriva also. If it doesn't run Mandriva well enough (the inclusion of some proprietary components within Xandros), just slap Xandros back on and sell it.
  18. Do Alt & F2 type kcontrol then go to Desktop--> Behaviour--> Device Icons. To add it to the Kmenu go to Panels--> Menus--> Optional menus and put a checkmark in System Menu. You should also be able to access them via your home folder. Just click the System icon then go to Storage Media.
  19. Hmm, I read the press release I saw no mention of Xandros anywhere. It does however state that this product will be I suppose it's like buying any other piece of hardware, there are no guarantees that it will run any op/sys without any problems.
  20. It would be safer if you ran ./configure and make as a normal user, then run make install as root.
  21. Care to qualify that statement with some examples? The fact that you have said it yourself nullifies your response. I did not ask who runs what, where, why and when. It is your choice as to how you interact with the internet I make no issue of it, so please if you don't like how I interact with the internet then have the courtesy to just sit there and tut about it, there's no need for your comments, they in no way help me to resolve the problem. For me it's not about what I look at online, it's about my right to privacy. :D @tyme: Thank you, now I know, it is nothing that I am doing wrong. @Ronin: Obviously you cannot see the smile on my face as I responded to your post. Do not be offended, I am not trying to instigate a 'flame war'. Please take my reply as light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek banter.
  22. Hmm, I hope you don't supply your sensitive username and passwords in cleartext! B)
  23. I apologise to those who have supplied answers my query, I should have been more specific about what I'm doing and maybe that would get me the answer(s) I am looking for. I am currently trying out Tor, Privoxy and Tork. I have made the required changes to the config files, however when I launch firefox Tork pops up and tells me that my traffic on port 80 is not encrypted. I have looked at the FAQs for Tor, Privoxy and Tork but none of them tell you how to encrypt your browser traffic. What do I need to do to ensure my browser traffic is redirected to port 443?
