  1. none. guru-ship is a bestowed honor. it is similar to respect, freely given and never taken. voted junior because the description of of the newbie is too limiting. but i will forever be a newbie. and i have the sigs and ranks to prove it. ciao!
  2. yep that is what i am doing today. the torrent stuff just feels giddy (i dont have to pay for every bandwidth consumed like what happened to some administrator called paul). :D good thing there is a nearby mirror. im pulling 100kbps. when i go home mid-december this will all just be a dream. :( ciao!
  3. that is why you are my 'poster child' when i am advocating linux. whenever people start to say linux is difficult i would usually reply with "that may be but i know of a 70-yr old retiree who was able to switch and use linux daily. that must have been one hell of a transition..." the last one is delivered with a very wide grin... oh, i installed mandy 8.0 when i was 22... ciao!
  4. is mandriva offering a torrent download? i promised myself i will do the torrent thing while i have a fast connection so i can help on the bandwidth part. but i cannot seem to find a torrent link on the mandrivasoft site. i find it weird... ciao!
  5. im just a casual user but i always thought that subversion maintains a 'pristine' repository copy on the the .svn directory and changes are determined by comparing the file with its pristine copy. i dont think its merely based on the timestamp (which i thnk is still part of the comparison). ciao!
  6. wow, installing linux on an ipaq is an assignment? i wish i had that kind of assignments... is the ipaq provided by the school? :) ciao!
  7. welcome macolly! :) it would also help if you can tell us what kind of compression your files are in. :) ciao!
  8. i am extended in my assignment duration so i will just wait for the torrent to be released to the public. that way i can get it faster and contribute as well. i hope 2006 has better support for my wireless card. i still havent figured out a way to replace the prism54 module with ndiswrapper. modprobing ndiswrapper doesnt show anything... oh well that is for another thread. ciao!
  9. that is what journalling file systems are for. data have data (aka metadata) describing them so that in case of abrupt system failure the file modifications can be easily reconstructed by replaying the journal. the amount of data loss is going to be minimal but if that guarantee is not good enough for you then there are certain tweaks in file systems to minimize the windows of your loss. instant write-to-disk? i think there are options for this but it is not recommended since it is not efficient. the reason why data is not directly written to disk is because I/O operations are costly. batching write instructios togerther is more efficient. even mission critical systems are using journaled filesystems so it should be good enough for most uses. ciao!
  10. afaik it has always been like that, each file is on a separate line as if it ls was given with a -l format (minus the details). ciao!
  11. why not configure sudo for your user? set it to no password so you wont be prompted for your user password. you need to use this for the most used utilities but this is cleaner than logging in as root then checking as a normal user. ciao!
  12. welcome to the board! post the errors and other information that we can use to diagnose the problem and let us where it gets us... :) ciao!
  13. i maintain one for my source codes, documents and configuration files. my repositories (i maintain a personal one apart from work-related) have only one user: me. svn is right for your needs. you dont need to learn the advance stuff, well you only need to learn them if you need them (in my case i dont). try giving it a spin. it fits your requirement of "only the changed" part very nicely. ciao!
  14. i dont encounter that on my home system because i usually download the packages and install them at home from a local drive. if you have the spare space and bandwidth maybe you could mirror the packages you want locally? ciao!
  15. ah, so it is the same as linuxant. :D ill put that off as the last resort. i dont know if my wife is going to approve buying a license from them (and i am going to sell this laptop when i go home so it might not be a wise decision). ill try to hammer out the native solution. wish me luck... ciao!
  16. try to search the board for AOSS. there was a project that should address the sound system sharing (multi-jack or something) but i dont know if its ready for primetime. somebody said applications need to be reprogrammed to support that new sound framework. ciao!
  17. this is the first time that i have heard of driverloader so i will research more about it when i get home. thanks for the tip. prism support was supposed to be included already in the 2.6.10 kernel. :( ciao!
  18. i have read the pinned wireless tip thread but it doesnt seem to apply to me directly. let me just give a brief recount. i have a gemtek card with my amilo pro v7010 (yes it is a laptop but it fits right here than in the laptop section) which is reported to be supported and working in debian with kernel 2.6.10. anyway, mandriva le 2005 detects it and autoconfigures it to eth1. when i do a iwconfig it gives out this output: eth1 NOT READY! ESSID:"Ramfree" Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00 Tx-Power=31 dBm Sensitivity=0/200 Retry min limit:0 RTS thr=0 B Fragment thr=0 B Encryption key:AAAA-BBBB-17 Security mode:restricted Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 the ESSID and encryption key are supplied by me via the commandline because the wizard is taking forever to complete. although i have already installed the ndiswrapper from the installer it is not being shown in lsmod. heck, modprobe ndiswrapper gives out an erorr that it cannot be found. the module for the card is 'prism54'. i am also trying to change the channel to 6 because that is the one used by the card when in windows. however i cannot seem to budge the channel setting. where can i find the information on why the card is not ready? what logs do i have to open? can you direct to what steps i need to do to get this thing working, or at least what steps do i need to do to start getting more information that can help resolve this problem? my lowerback is already hurting from using the coffeetable and i can only use windows if i use the kitchen table since i cant make the lan cable run all the way to the kitchen area without courting disaster. thanks for your time. ciao!

    Mandriva 2006

not as simple as that because i dont have a usable internet connection back home (i live in mountainous regions). i give copies of the installations so i really need the image. :) ciao!
  20. there was previously a gmailfs project which allows you to mount the gmail space as a normal filesystem. i dont know if it is still active but maybe you could use it to download all of your emails in one go. ciao!

    Mandriva 2006

if its going to be released tom then i would need to wait another month for it to be publicly released. i wish it would be released to the public at least a week before i go home so that i can download it via torrent. :D ciao!
  22. i did something similar when I added arch linux on my dual-boot system. what i did was to copy down on a piece of paper the boot partition of arch (which is the same as its root partition) and skipped the bootloader part. i went into mandriva (my main os) and then edited the grub menu, and then rebooted again to get into arch. what went wrong with my setup? nothing really at the time but when I messed up a mdv upgrade i inadventently wiped the mdv boot partition when I stopped reinstalling halfway. it was a good thing i noted down the partitions because i was able to boot into arch using the grub oniine prompt. :) ciao!
  23. not all-powerful, just enough to equal the energy radiated by the sound of one hand clapping in the middle of the forest where a tree has fallen. ciao!
  24. i dont know if this was a reply on my answer so i read it back and there is indeed a possibility that my answer can be interpreted two ways... by semi-closed source offering i was talking about the distros that they are selling and not the projects that mandrivasoft is sponsoring/developing (e.g. urpmi). just clarifying things.. ciao!
