  1. Thanks a lot Peter - it works for me this way bojo
  2. Hi Guys, for some reason when I redirect ls to a file it always have new lines inserted. even if I try to use ls -m it still inserts new line after about 3 entries. I expect to have one line with all the files listed separated by space... it used to be like this every advice will be appreciated thanks a lot bojo
  3. ssh -4 -L 5902:homeaddress:5901 myname@myhost tried for VNC ssh -4 -L 7222:homeaddress:10000 myname@myhost tried for lin config - just to use different application. Mozilla, Firefox, IE same result. again if I do this at home - loopback either using local host or the IP of the system it is successful - https://localhost:7222/ would work and vncviewer::5902 would also work thanks
  4. Hi Guys, I am failing to create a tunnel over SSH. MDK92 at home. As a loopback it would work at home and the tunnels are fine - VNC. However when I try to connect from remote it woudn't work. I tried to connecto from OSX panther and win2k using ptty. In both cases the port is open sucessfuly - IPv4 but just nothing comming back from the server. X forwarding works SFTP works and normal SSH works - just port forwarding is down or I am doing something wrong. Any advice would be hightly appreciated. thanks, bojo
  5. I don't think it's too good idea to turn on/off the computer without proper reboot just to force the check. The best would be just to leave the system to do it itself. EXT3 is a jurnalized file system. It means that in case of crash - power outage etc it should restore itself from the jurnal. I remember I read about the message that pops up when Mandrake starts and it asks if you would like to force hard drive check. And by doing this the user in fact disable the jurnal for recovery purpoces. Also the swap file is located on a separate partitition - it means that fragmenting of the files is down to minimum. However if you do want to experiment how FSCK works you may want to learn first how to boot to level 3 (no X - GUI) and then restore to level 5. Read man fsck, man init, man mount, man fstab good luck!
  6. Hi Guys, I am using MDK 9.2 with KDE 3.1 How can I swap left and right channel - the output? I can't swap the speakers (not enough cable) thanks, bojo
  7. Hi Guys, Does anybody have experience with Infra Red Mouse/Trackball and using it the same time as LIRC device for controling XMMS? I am thinking about Logitech trackball. It is USB but it can also go as a normal PS2 mouse with the included adapter. So if I can use the same infra red sensor as an imput for LIRC it would be good. thanks

    nVidia or ATI?

I am using ATI Guys - Rage 128 - Pro All In Wander. Had no troubles at all under win. No troubles under Lin either (unless you want to squeeze all of it). Eventually I managed to watch TV under Lin but still this and that bothers me. Of course I am just a newbe so in most cases I blame myself for that. However I should admit that it seems Nvidia is kind of better supported under Lin. Maybe it would be not a bad idea if you check on the supported hardware and try to find out if the company releases it's own Lin drivers. One or two months ago I bumped into a message that was saying about the ATI cards that they are very good but there are too many proprietary parts and it makes it more difficult to develope an open source driver. I guess eventually everything will work but you need the card working now and working good right?
  9. file:/usr/share/doc/proftpd-1.2.8/ there are a couple of examples .conf files that you may want to have a look at. I am not familiar with kerberos but UseFtpUsers on this is what I use to restrict users also you may want to have a look at change root. didn't have any problems connecting from unix & pc and mac os9 using fetch but os10 gives me some problems Oh usualy prftp runs under nobody -user and group. you may need to check that this user exist on your system. after changing the config sent it a HUP signal. another place to have a look at is webmin you may find it good
  10. Hi Guys, I am trying to configure a personal crontab for using kalarm. Kind of b-day reminders. kalarm "this is my message" from the command prompta works good - it displays the window with the text inside - what I want. however when I put it in a personal crontab and try to run it from webmin - to see if it works it gives me error. Output from command /usr/bin/kalarm "imash rojden den" .. Aborting. $HOME is not set. ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpected. any ide how can I fix this? 0 10,14 22 1 * /usr/bin/kalarm "imash rojden den" this is the line from the crontab file (it is not the main one - /etc/crontab but a personal one that executes the command as myself) Thanks bojo
