This is a native linux port - but it's still in beta. Unless someone else knows otherwise...

Help required with installation [solved]
phunni replied to amjidk's topic in Command Line, Kernel and Programming
j2ee is not the standard java edition - it's for enterprise apps and not what you want. It doesn't contain the basic java executable since it expect the standard edition to be installed as well. If you are only running java apps (as opposed to compiling them etc...) then you will only need the jre not the jdk... -
Just disovered an online version of the same article - here

Good article in this morning Guardian (UK newspaper) on software patents. try and have a read if you can. Although I imagine he'd be largely preaching to the converted... [moved from Talk-Talk by spinynorman]

I tried it, but can;t figure out if it worked or not... I mean the installer ran perfectly well, but I can't tell if the old or new drivers are being used...

Fair point. What I was trying to say about helping newbies was more along the lines of being able to objectively discuss the merits of one OS vs the other. I suspect that many people on this board would simply dismiss windows as being useless - which is not really all that helpful... Also, I had personally never been a part of an online community before I started using linux and I suspect that would be true of other newbies. It seems likely that many people will barge in with no real idea of etiquette or how things come across online and be taken for trolls when they might just be naive...

Why do people get so angry about good, honest open discussion? If everyone is unwilling to sensibly discuss MS vs Windows then we are going to be of limited use to newbies. Just disregarding windows with a joke or dismissing it as unusable unstable (which is rubbish - but to hear some people you wonder how any windows users are ever able to get anything done!) does not count as sensible discusion.

Quote on what the site is all about: Hopefully that makes the site a bit clearer... Basically, if you sign up then you're agreeing to write to your MP protesting about software patents if x amount of other people do! I realise that you could contact your MP anyway - but signing up for this will help encourage others to as well...

A chance to get involved! Software patents pledge Actually, you could get involved anyway - but this helps encourage you and help you to do it in a group! This is for UK citizens only, but others can still take action - especially in the EU...

I far prefer Linux for several reasons but I still use windows as my main OS for several reasons - the main one being that it (mostly) just works. A fully working Linux system would be far prefereable to me, but I simply don't have the time to tweak all the things that don't work out of the box... I'm going to have even less time soon as my first child is on the way... I used Linux exclusively for about 2 years and then chose to go back to windows. Maybe one day I'll go back. I've had no problems with viruses or spyware and I only accept certain updates so I've had no problems there either. Perhaps I've been lucky and maybe I'll be driven back to Linux in frustration one day - although I use my home PC less & less so I can't see it happening any time soon. I still use Linux on my home server though - wouldn't put anything else on a server... I do also have an install of arch on my desktop which I occasionally boot into - but I don't have the time to play so much these days...

Are any of the above links not work safe?
-
Probably the easiest thing to do is: 1) format the spare space 2) edit /etc/fstab to mount it somewhere specificly in under / - i.e. /var/logs 3) mount it somewhere else temporarily to copy existing information from that location over 4) reboot
-
I'll check in my xorg.conf next time I'm booted into Linux and see what mine is set to. You probably will lose the use of your wheel - this is a kernel bug and you can't completely fix it until the bug is fixed in the kernel - hopefully soon!
-
What is the protocol currently set to? Reading file is much safer than editing it ;)
-
It's probably because of a kernel bug and the reason other distros don't pick it up is because they configure X differently. Try playing around with different protocols for your mouse in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf - it's pretty easy to fix, although

I've been trying to set up and open-ldap server on my system and I can't get it to work. I've follwed the quickstart to the letter but am told whenever I try and connect that the ldap server cannot be contacted... I was under the impression that icculus had been provided with the game sources by EA Games in this case, which would make it at least sanctioned if not "official"... Anyway - I hijacked this thread first, answer my question!

All my ports are already stealthed - I just want to be told that my computer is VERY SECURE :D
-
suckers! tested my pc through shields-up with all their tests (not just the Windows specific one :D) all is stealthed apart from one port that reports as closed* Running Shorewall (that came with mdk) with some ports open for file sharing, everything else is on lockdown. * 113 IDENT Closed Your computer has responded that this port exists but is currently closed to connections. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How'd you do that and what are the implications of having things locked down that tight?

well, there are a few of us archers around so there is help available if you need it...

Arch: pacman doesn't return any query results
phunni replied to ramfree17's topic in Other Linux and Unix Distributions
If you do a pacman -Q <some-package> it will return the version of the package you have installed. If you don't have it installed, then you'll get nothing at all. Is this what you're experiencing? -
For reference I've attached my xorg.conf I'm using an ATI 9800 - but before anyone starts ranting about ATI - I have had this working before, nt sure why it isn't working now... Edit: OK, for some reason I can't attach my xorg.conf - so here it is quoted:
-
neither - I have the UK version, so there is no installer - I just followed the instructions in the readme. It;s not the demo it is the full game...
-
ooh! For some reason it actually exited gracefully this time and I could see the output: Does this give any ideas?
-
I'm getting this now too - after a re-install. (actually a couple of re-installs, the problem affected them all.) If I click on an option in the menu, the game freezes - sometimes it get's as far as the progress bar, but that's it. The only way to get back into my computer again is to <ctlr>-<alt>-<backspace>... Did anyone figure out why this happens or how to fix it? I realise it could just be because it's beta (I'm running beta 3) but I have had b3 working before...
