  1. ndeb and others, I just read your remark about the security issue here.... And actually, I quite disagree. I'm sorry, but I fail to see the problem with this 'you can get root access by doing ... on the machine locally' Anyone into security knows that physical access to a machine means they can get into the system and get to the data. If need be by unscrewing the harddisk and plugging it into another system... Real security means you physically lock the systems away. Just boot your average system with a knoppix cd, and type sudo. Or put in the mandrake cd and go through the install process (update, so you don't have to know the partitioning etc, without installing anything extra), and set another root password. Or, in any company where they know what they're doing, try to walk into the serverroom with a couple of floppy disks and some cd's, and see if they let you get to their systems. There are companies that secure their server rooms with touch sensitive floors, motion detectors and the like. You walk in there, somewhere lights start blinking, people check what's on the camera's and you can start waving to them. A system should be secure from remote exploits, local exploits are in most cases acceptable for home users since they also have the rootpassword, since basically they are their own admin. Local exploits in the sense of: when you're at that pc, not: by running this code... You can say: but I can encrypt my hd etcetc. Ok, but what if your system gets hosed for some reason? And you can't get to your data anymore? A secure system is one that no one can physically get to and that is protected against all remote exploits and intrusions etc... (so maybe, just not connected to anything..)

    Friendly Printer

Don´t go Lexmark, they have bad quality output and closed source drivers, no good community support. Epson is good (I like the quality on mine, they score quite well in tests, and they give good linux support), some/most HP. Printers are cheap, the ink is almost as expensive as pure gold...
  3. In my fstab it looks like: /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0 so I think you mixed codepage and umask...
  4. To get back on UDF, packet writing on cd-rw... There is a new thing called Mount Rainier, developed mainly by Philips, marketed under the name EasyWrite, and most new burners have it. (So yes, with older drives you're SOL) Mount Rainier makes a true floppy replacement out of your cd-rw burner + disc. Dvd+rw is similar. With UDF you have less than the normal 650MB or 700MB that the disc is marked with, due to the extra error correction stuff. Now, MountRainier/EasyWrite formatted discs have even less space. Why? Simple, the error correction/defect correction mechanism on UDF/classical packet writing is not good enough. It would be, if the disc were in a cartridge. Which it isn't. Basically, MountRainier should be in the 2.4.21pre kernels, but I haven't found anything. I know Philips opened the door enough for linux, but I don't have a drive to test... Anyway, I'd advice anyone to stay away from the classical UDF stuff, and step up to the new EasyWrite thing. Dvd+rw will do the same for you, as soon as you can afford it... In the mean time, just write cd-rw's as cd-r's, so they can be read everywhere.

    Burning Cd's

Using special 'music' cd-r's on your computer is a waste of money, normally they charge some extra sum (in most European countries something like 1 euro, or 0.50cts) just for the heck of it for these cd's. Just use computer cd-r's and try a bit. Check if you can which manufacturer it is, avoid Ritek is all I know (all else people don't seem to agree on, but this,.. check any cdr forum...), and stick to (for instance) Tayo Yuden. Most linux burnprograms will tell you the manufacturer, just keep an eye on the lines that flash by. BTW, the brand is a whole different thing, I have a batch of Sony's lying around that I know will play back in all cd players I have (including my discman), bought more of those once I found out how well they play everywhere, and they are from Tayo Yuden. So I went back and got more of those. Expensive is not necessarily good, nor is cheap necessarily bad. Just be careful, and try some cheap ones,... if they play everywhere you need them to play, get a whole pile. Oh yeah, I know that for instance Philips has some (mostly asian) batches of Premiums from Ritek, and some (in europe) from Tayo Yuden, with the exact same markings/type on the outside.... guess any other brand may have this too.
  6. I think it may be better to buy, but I want things quick and just use the download distro. But I have to mention: because of me spreading the download distro, 3 others became members, which is something to be taken into account. The pack you are not allowed to copy I think, due to some proprietary stuff. I may pick one up, if/once it includes the newer staroffice (I know, OOo is basically the same.. I would like to have the thesaurus etc), or upgrade to silver member so I can dl it. Also, in most cases it's one or the other: dl and Club, vs buy pack. I may do both but hey, I'm in Switzerland on a high salary.... There's often too much against waiting for the pack, so then you dl anyway... Before it's here in stores, mdk9.2 will be very much under way I fear.. Question: if you buy a pack, are you then automatically a Club Member???

    MDK & Bluetooth

I don't know about mdk, but I have seen on some forums that people are happily using usb-bt sticks and the like on linux. Try google, and google groups->linux.. And don't forget to let us know! ;)
  8. I have an epson stylus color 740, it works great. I use mainly the gimp to print stuff. (But have used OOo and webbrowsers or pdfviewers.) Please look around and choose a printer from a company that really supports linux, like epson. I think lexmark is one of the bad guys, they don't open up and give info, there are just proprietary drivers; and nobody knows if they will support them in the future... Often people underestimate the importance of open source drivers, but imagine this: somebody finds a way to refill the ink on some supposedly protected printer cartridge, and the manufacturer decides that it is no longer worth the hassle of updating the driver, thus forcing the customer to buy something new or not upgrade.. Anyway, lexmark may have turned around, ... in most reviews they score so badly I would never consider those. Canon is a brand that scores quite well, but linux support is nowhere,... hp is said to be ok, but not on older (read secondhand) printers. Something else to consider: the ink is very expensive, if you don't really need colour you may be able to find great deals on used but good laser printers, I regularly see ~150US$ laserprinters (b/w) that will in the long run be much cheaper than colour inkjets, because the paper is cheaper and the toner is much cheaper.
  9. Ehm, maybe I'm missing something, but I have managed to copy win98se to a second hd just by copying all files, under win98. You should just omit the swap file, on the c: dir. That said, what's against just creating partitions on the new drive and copying everything over there whilst under mdk9.0? Make sure you put win on the first, let's say hdb1 (must be primary), and linux any way you want, but modify the /etc/fstab to point to the right partitions. If you have the same partition layout (hd numbering), but just larger partitions for /home for instance, you won't even have to change /etc/fstab, just make sure you have a bootfloppy, copy the partition info and swap the drives. Then you have to reinstall (or install, since it was never there) lilo; boot with bootflop and run lilo. Oh btw, you may want to check the correct options when you copy the files from one partition to another (cp -pax has been mentioned).
  10. Dead on! I didn´t realise it could be so simple, so to check (if it wasn´t just looking like this by chance) I just turned off the temp reduction settings for athlon/duron: on MSI K7T266Pro (MS-6380) (KT266) and KT333 based Motherboards: enable: setpci -v -H1 -s 0:0.0 70=86 setpci -v -H1 -s 0:0.0 95=1e disable: setpci -v -H1 -s 0:0.0 70=82 setpci -v -H1 -s 0:0.0 95=1c to have the temps change, and indeed, it´s just a factor of 2 that I have to put in for the values to be correct (it´s going up to 54 or so); guess I can turn the temp down again.
  11. I´m having some probs with gkrellm, and this is not listed as a bug on the gkrellm site http://web.wt.net/~billw/gkrellm/Bugs.html, and the only mention of something (very) similar I found on google was: this guys problem... My gkrellm shows: temp1: 34.0 C temp2: 22.5 C temp3: 6.7 C But: [president@whitehouse president]$ sensors eeprom-i2c-0-50 Adapter: bt848 #0 Algorithm: Bit-shift algorithm as99127f-i2c-1-2d Adapter: SMBus Via Pro adapter at e800 Algorithm: Non-I2C SMBus adapter VCore 1: +1.79 V (min = +1.74 V, max = +1.93 V) VCore 2: +1.79 V (min = +1.74 V, max = +1.93 V) +3.3V: +3.28 V (min = +3.13 V, max = +3.45 V) +5V: +4.89 V (min = +4.72 V, max = +5.24 V) +12V: +12.16 V (min = +10.79 V, max = +13.19 V) -12V: -12.72 V (min = -0.00 V, max = -0.00 V) -5V: -4.82 V (min = -0.00 V, max = -0.00 V) fan1: 0 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2) fan2: 0 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2) fan3: 0 RPM (min = 3000 RPM, div = 2) temp1: +34°C (limit = +60°C) temp2: +45.4°C (limit = +120°C, hysteresis = +100°C) temp3: +13.4°C (limit = +120°C, hysteresis = +100°C) vid: +1.850 V alarms: beep_enable: Sound alarm enabled [president@whitehouse president]$ I don´t know what temp3 is supposed to be, but temp1 should be mobo and temp2 should be cpu. Also, these are the only 3 temps on the system. As far as I know, the temps on gkrellm come from lm_sensors, so if sensors doesn´t show them, gkrellm won´t either. Oh and by the way, I already tried to change the locale to have both the comma ( , ) and dot ( . ) as decimal point indicator, restarted gkrellm, changed stuff in config and back etcetc, to no avail. Does anyone know how to remedy this? Ps also the voltages are slightly off for some values, notably the -5V..

I am afraid u r wrong. I tried both xrandr and ctrl-alt methods and could make mplayer (fullscreen) occupy the actual screen size for both. In general, with xrandr, the disadvantage is that u cannot pan which means a part of the virtual screen is never viewable. I stand corrected, I tried a very long time ago, and must not have payed attention to start mplayer after switching to the desired resolution, instead of before, then switch and make fullscreen. And so, I do agree. Only one thing: for tilting screens it is a good feature, if only because some people may want it and that other OS offers it.
  13. Wisea$$! ;) Ok, command line cowboys, in that case: try a man mkisofs, and check for the -A switch: -A application_id Specifies a text string that will be written into the volume header. This should describe the application that will be on the disc. There is space on the disc for 128 characters of information. This parameter can also be set in the file .mkisofsrc with APPI=id. If specified in both places, the com- mand line version is used. Did you use this, with the correct info that was in the original iso?
  14. Very strange, it's more normal that windows doesn't allow full use of a drive (if you have an older bios), and linux does (I know of some cases of people who couldn't have a hd larger than 8GB under win, or at least, not use more than 8GB, but have a full 120GB under linux, best way to protect you data is what I think...).... In any case, check if there are bios settings that you can change/play with. Also check if there is a newer bios available, and update it. Note: all at your own risk! ;) BTW the 8GB limit and the 31 vs 39GB are not related; 8GB is the max adressable in non-LBA mode drives for the bios, hence no way to boot anything that is beyond that... well in the old days.. How was the drive formatted before you installed win98? This may have had some influence. I wouldn't worry about the difference between 39 and 38GB, that may just be some difference in calculation and displaying GB's.
  15. About the images not having the same checksum: did you put the same title and other info in the .iso that you made? If not, sure it's different; they don't have the exact same info. Mandrake puts something like: Mandrake cd x and some other stuff in the publisher/edition headers of the iso. Use for instance gcombust to read the iso info ('read info' after selecting the iso)...
  16. Just select audio => 4 channels (or 5.1) in the xine config menu (left bottom, next to the quit button). Remember, you must have the rear channels working on your soundcard. Is your sound integrated in your mobo? I have the asusa7v333, with 6 channel sound integrated, but in linux the driver only allows you to mirror the front channels to the rear ones. Usefull, not! Hence my sblive5.1 in my machine.

Nope, with ctrl-alt-+- mplayer for instance would do fullscreen to the virtual desktopsize, which would be much bigger than the actual size/resolution, so I would only see part of the movie.
  18. Thanks starbane, will do it. Btw in the process I found this urpmi source updater page: http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php It helps you with the exact commands; just make sure you edit out any extra unwanted space that may have come in if the code is too long for the window and it wrapped to the next line... (If this doesn´t make sense then you´re not having the same problem that I just had... lucky you.. :) )

Well, I am happy with xrandr. I guess that it would be nicer to have kde scale with the whole thing, so everything fits into the new screensize, which it doesn´t, but for me it´s good enough: it allows me to select a lower resolution, at which moment I can then connect my projector, and still have mplayer or xine do fullscreen correctly (and not, as currently, to the whole virtual screen, meaning that at 1280x1024 with a virtual size of 1600x1200 I would miss a lot of what´s going on in the movie...). BTW I do hope that kde and gnome etc will make things scale with the xrandr screensize.
  20. It's not a problem MS has to fix, it's a problem that's a solution to them... I agree wholeheartedly with you: just do everything in OOo, and if people don't have it, either save to pdf and/or offer them to pass them a cd with OOo. I recently heard here in Switzerland, the Kanton of Geneva has done exactly that to all taxpayers: they sent them a cd with (amongs other things like the tax form) OOo for Win and Lin!! These people are using their heads. Wish all others would do the same.

???? But wasn't it supposed to also resize the virtual workspace? And does it do that? (I mean, so that you don't have to pan anymore) I will try it tonight, and see what happens. My next thing will be a tft monitor (for my girlfriend), and it would be nice to be able to use it in portrait mode...

I noticed in /var/log/XFree86.0.log that randr was switched on, but found that when switching resolutions with ctrl-alt-+ or - the virtual displaysize remained the same, so I found myself still panning across the screen.... And I thought RandR was developed to fix that, so how do I use it? Or is it because of KDE that I cannot use it yet? Ps most people don't care so much about this, they set one single resolution and stick with it, but I have my projector that I want to send the signal to, and it doesn't accept 1600x1200....
  23. qnr, I was thinking of doing that, but plf seems to have some new xine packages, so I'll try those first. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, but have better things to do then waste time if it's not necessary. SDMF, I have used ogle in the past, couldn't get my 4.0 channel surround working properly, and I just want xine to work. I don't like changing apps because something somehow doesn't work. That's a mentality from another OS... :D I know xine can work, I just started this thread to find out how to fix it.
  24. Boonders, 9.1rc1 mplayer does NOT play encrypted dvd's so if you have some unencrypted (pirated ? ) ones, sure no problem... ;) the ones I have from Asia also play fine, on mplayer and xine. And the plugins installed fine, only show a dependency to libxine >=0.9.13 I think... qnr, I am using mdk9.1rc1 and xine that comes with it is partially used in konqueror etc... so I don't want to break that, just want to add the proper plugins. Naturally, if you installed the versions from freshrpms.net they work... mtweidmann, you're dead-on: the rpms I used are probably built for an older version of wine (from plf), unfortunately I didn't find any newer ones for this release of mdk xine... And I too prefer xine for dvd-playback. I'll check plf for more recently compiled xine plugins, can't imagine I'm the only one wanting this....
  25. Well, yes, but mplayer doesn´t support menus, and I like xine. Just want to know how to get it to accept the plugins. Btw mplayer does not come with default dvd support, you have to install libdvdcss or so... So how do I do that and where do I get that?
