  1. Q1 - A quick google turned up some links to people who have been able to get it working. Didn't read, so I'm not sure how. Q2 - Not sure. I just use my little 2 channel set up. Q3 - I believe so, but don't hold me to it. Q4 - No kazaa for Linux, but you can make it work in Linux. Better yet use Overnet, Limewire or Bittorrent. Q5 - Not well (at least in my experience) Was there something in particular you were trying to get to run? Should you switch? - Of course (what else would I say :D) Maybe someone else can give you a better answer on Q2-3 BTW - Welcome to the board
  2. What the heck was that? Little wizard popped up and said "did you miss me?" and goes away. What's that good for? *Edit* Hehe, I found what it's good for. I changed the script so that he says "This Windows machine sucks. Can someone help me get into a real OS?" I just can't stop clicking him now :D
  3. Sorry, I don't have any experience with sendmail. Just out of curiousity, why did you pick sendmail, rather than the standards, like Evolution and kmail?
  4. Yes, it will remove the lock. When I started with MDK, that's the only way I could figure out.
  5. Check you're firewall. Did you mess with the "share a connection" wizard? That tends to happen. If hardware and ifconfig look good, then try completely turning off firewall (remember that you have to select the network card). Then reset the computer (I'm sure this isn't necessary, but old Windows habbits die hard) Once you're back on, reset your firewall as you see fit.
  6. I use a combination of Overnet and Limewire. Works well enough for me. And Limewire wasn't that hard to install.

    Eterm

I haven't been using eterm because, with my screen ratio, the text becomes illegible. By changing the color, I can read it again. Thanks for the tip. Now is there any way to get rid of the text shadowing?
  8. Like Michel said - What email client are you using?. Mkd 10 is pretty easy to set up, and while webmin is extremely usefull, you shouldn't need it for this (although it is good to have)

    FTP problems

So I guess I just need to learn to live with it?

    FTP problems

Yeah, It happens with p2p apps also, but I had figured on that slowing things down. (as devires said). The FTP is what is confusing me. At the moment, only one other person is using the FTP, and it's at a 5kbps upload speed (he's dialing up). I checked the server logs, and there are no other hitts/req. It seems that with a broadband upload speed of 128kbps, the 5kbps that he's using shouldn't really affect things. Anyone else experiencing this?

    FTP problems

I'm running an FTP server off of my home computer. Nothing commercial or even important, just a way for some buddies overseas to move files we're all working on. My problem is, when the ftp is uploading, (actually, any time I'm uploading anything - overnet/limewire), even if it's only at 5 kbps, Every other Internet based app (web browser, email. online games) Slows to a crawl. I have an ADSL connection, and not much BW is being used. Why does this happen, and is there any way to adjust/compensate for it?
  12. yupp.... lala winky winky!... :woot_jump: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That would explain why my little girl suddenly wants to play with my computer :D Thanks Darkelve, I pulled my avatar off of a wallpaper I found on DA a few months ago. Hadn't checked recently.
  13. Here's my most recent. But I've got to change it now. A buddy came over last night and took one look at it and said "How come you've got a Teletubby walpaper?" TELETUBBIES???? Crap, it does kinda look like the Teletubby hill doesn't it?
  14. Happened in Jan. of this year. I spent about 3 1/2 hours on the phone with MS tech. sup. for a networking problem with no solution (later found out that another piece of MS software deleted zero conf. file). I was in a pissy mood and my IT guy, and personal friend popped in to say hi. I proceded to tell him what a piece of crap Windows was, and he reccomended I try another OS. I knew of Mac and had used it in college but didn't like it much. Other than that I hadn't heard of any other OS. He came to my house later that evening with 3 cds (MDK 9.1 or 9.2). We installed (dual boot) on my home computer, and everything worked right off. He had never messed with Linux and I hadn't either. I asked him how much I owed him for the OS and he told me it was free. He then explained the whole open source concept to me and introduced me to a community of people that shared and helped improve each others work and then made available for others to enjoy. I found this site and about a month later, completely removed my windows partition. And here I am today. So my Mandrake experience is also my Linux experience. Since that time, I have been able to convince a couple of other buddies to try Linux, and then installed on their machines, I've switched the AV controll computers in my church to Linux, and just finished building my first computer, designed especially for Linux (put MDK 10.0 OE on that one).
  15. MCC >>Network & Internet >>Internet Access. That should allow you to change host name.
  16. Not really necessary, as there are plenty of open source apps out there that work as well or better than Word. Open Office is one of them, and it can be installed off of your Mandrake CDs. It can save in Word format if you are concerned about taking doccuments to and from a Windows machine.
  17. Nope, I'm running 10.0 and I don't have it either.
  18. I worked on mine for a month, then gave up and used parallel cable to connect. Worked immediately. Wish I could give you better advice, but that's the only way I could get my printer to work. (I know, I know - I took the easy way out :P )
  19. When are you getting the lock error? I know I used to get it a lot when I was updating my sources and if I had to kill console while I was updating or installing something (really slow connection, endless curl errors, etc - I'm not a patient guy-) Now as long as I hit "ctrl C" it won't lock on me.
  20. What DE are you using? I spend most of my time in Gnome, and use GProftpd as my frontend. It was really easy to set up, and once you have it going, you rarely need to mess with it. *EDIT* I'm relatively new to Linux also, and this was the first FTP server that I had set up.
  21. I've got a C62 - I ended up connecting it with a parallel cable to fix (ok, more like bypass) my problem.
  22. Hmmmm..... No ISDN for me. Wonder what's triggering it?
