  1. I'm a little confused as I've never used Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Are you saying you just can't su to root? I've never used sudo because I don't like it. Do you have to use it?
  2. I have a Broadcom and it's not supported currently so I have to use ndiswrapper and that didn't work with Mandriva. I'll see if I have any better luck with kubuntu.
  3. Thanks for all the input. I probably won't mess with it until this semester is out which will be in about three weeks but I wanted to get a head start with some info. As far as it being too easy I want something easy on the lappy. I only use it for school so I don't want to have to mess with it. And I got Gentoo on the desktop so it's all good. Thanks again! I'll probably be back with questions once I get it installed. I'll have to check out this sudo thing myself. mysti
  4. I'm probably going to give Kubuntu a try since I've read so many problems with 2007 and 2006 is a disaster for me. Can anybody give me some input as to what Kubuntu is like? I'm going with Kubuntu cause I like KDE. I know you can install it with Ubuntu but I like that fact that it's KDE oriented.
  5. I had to install esound to get online sound working.
  6. 2006 has been bad news for me too. And I've never had anything but minor problems that were easily fixable in older versions. I'd stick with 10.1. It was a good release.
  7. Thanks ian. I usually start this thread at the beginning of the month but between work and school I've been very distracted.
  8. Well I've been reading posts on the board and I think I'll wait before I upgrade to 2007. I'd like to see them get some of the bugs worked out. Hopefully they will soon.
  9. I use Gentoo on my desktop which is where I do all my personal stuff. My laptop has Mandriva and it's for school. And I also use Gnucash for a simple check register and it works great.
  10. For anyone who has not tried the newest version of gnucash I would strongly recommend it. It is a big improvement over the old version which still used gtk1. Gnucash will import .qif files so if you're hanging onto windows cause you like quicken or ms money I suggest you give gnucash a try. It's been out about two months I think so it should be in the Mandriva repos. If not compile it yourself. It's worth it. :)
  11. Back on topic or you're all :ban: :P
  12. True if your pure desire is to appeal to the masses. But the question is what do you think about control centers and do they matter or not. To me that depends on the individual. Gentoo is not designed to appeal to the masses or even your average linux user. But it forces you to learn, something that a distro with a control center doesn't. So for me the answer is that I'm not interested in a control center cause I want to do things the hard way and learn more. Yes I know it's wierd. :) But if you are trying to convert window users then I agree that something like MCC is essential.
  13. There are a lot of people that know more about linux than I ever will and I don't really consider myself much of a geek (inspite of my irc nick ;) ) but I definitely prefer Gentoo's hands on approach. I admit gui's are great for beginners but if you're really serious about learning linux then I think cli is the way to go. Not that you can't do that in Mandriva but it's too easy to just use MCC cause it's there. If you're lazy like me anyway. :P
  14. That's fantastic news. I was very saddened when he left Gentoo and not thrilled when he moved to M$ but as has been stated the man had to support his family and pay the bills. And it is my understanding from the Gentoo board that developing Gentoo left him in debt. Welcome back Daniel Robbins!
  15. I want one of those but it's too complicated and I'm too lazy. :P
  16. I really hope it is an improvement. I've never complained about Mandrake/Mandriva since 8.2 even when other people said certain versions suck. But 2006 has given me nothing but problems. Maybe it just doesn't like my hardware in which case I'll have to look to another distro. I hope it works though cause I really don't want to switch.
  17. Me too. I like the dark theme. Bright and cheery is just plain annoying. /ignore fissy :P
  18. I don't know why distros do that. AFAIK Gentoo uses the default KDE one and I like it much better than Mandriva's.
  19. I would definitely recommend installing Gentoo using the old method. I do a stage 2 install that is completely done using cli from a chroot environment. I really learned a lot that way and I found it far more interesting that installing LFS.
  20. I tried LFS. I found it extremely tedious and boring. And I'm a Gentoo user. :P
  21. bah! I don't care about smooth scrolling. Opera under linux is perfect for to me. And the version I use even has a gentoo logo that links directly to forums.gentoo.org. :P
