  1. when it comes to linux im not very good at describing problems if i have any and most of the time when i install linux i have problems with the sound card and not the video card
  2. i got it fixed heres my thread on linuxquestions.org in case someone else may need help my thread on linuxquestions
  3. not really have all updates and tryed as many guides as i could find and when it breaks the xserver and i restart into recovery mode and do sudo startx it says no screens found
  4. hello all hope your doing well, i have ubuntu 6.10 installed on my dektop (finally got it working) and im having problems getting my video card working ie direct rendering 3d etc, i managed to get it working once but when i restarted my xserver messed up and wouldnt boot into either gdm or kde and it seems as if the sti drivers are messing breaking the xserver to where i have to use vesa or mesa in order to get it to boot, i have already posted this problem on the ubuntu forums but its slow go as theres so many posts on there that mine gets pushed back so im trying other linux forums, also here the readout from the lspci command, the video card is a ATI Radeon X1600 PCI-E 512mb video card root@trey-desktop:~# lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 Host Bridge (rev 10) 00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 PCI-X Root Port 00:12.0 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller 00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB Host Controller 00:13.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB Host Controller 00:13.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB2 Host Controller 00:14.0 SMBus: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 SMBus Controller (rev 11) 00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller ATI 00:14.3 ISA bridge: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 PCI-ISA Bridge 00:14.4 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 PCI-PCI Bridge 00:18.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration 00:18.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map 00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller 00:18.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV530 [Radeon X1600] 01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV530 [Radeon X1600] (Secondary) 02:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. 5. ok so i switched over to ubuntu and i have to say i love it, works alot better with my older machines than mandriva did though i still like mandriva, but anyway, im trying to install updated video card drivers for my laptop under ubuntu but when i do what it says to do i get this if anyone knows whats going on please let me know
  6. nope not in there, but the strange thing is, that alsa can detect the card and it seems to load a driver for it, but it doesnt work
  7. i did that command in the console and i didnt get any errors
  8. question, is there a reason why my ISA sound card i not in sounddrak, but yet alsa detected it and loaded a driver for it but yet i cant hear sound? and everything is not muted
  9. ok heres an update, been working on the whole alsa problem on and off and still havent got it fixed, i tryed to install the latest version but it wont install, so if anyone has any advice please let me know, thanks.
  10. ok i got mandriva 2007 free installed and it works good but alsa is not working and its installed, tryed doing alsaconf and it says bash: alsaconf: command not found which is weird since its installed etc
  11. well i downloaded and am burning the free version of mandriva 2007, so i guess we will find out how well it will run
  12. yes im running 10.1 and i posted in one of the other forums on this site asking if i should upgrade or not, since i only use this for learning but since i cant seem to get alsa updated and/or get my sound card working looks like im gonna have to update
  13. hmmm that didnt seem to work and also something that i keep forgetting to post is that, my sound card doesnt show up in MCC for some strange reason, the only thing i can think of is that the sound card is ISA, but thanks for the advice
  14. hey all sorry for not updatting but i been sick and stuff so yeah but anyway, i have following this page to get alsa updated click here also sorry for any typos in this post, now im not able to update my copy of mandriva cause of my processer, i think thats the error i get when i try to update, its a 600mhz P3
