  1. to be fair, vendetta has a different goal as to how they want the game to be...so really, one isn't better than the other, it's just personal preference. i think ;)
  2. I would imagine it runs a fully-functional linux distribution, with the ability to install software, so if java isn't there by default it should be available either through the package manager (don't know what version of linux it's got) or by download from the java site.
  3. I believe using dd causes issues if your new partitions are a different size than your old. If I remember correctly, I once attempted to use dd like this to copy from a smaller partition to a larger, and when i booted into the new system the partitions registered as the size of the previous smaller ones, not of the new ones I had created. If the sizes of the partitions are different, I think it may be a better idea to use a cp: cp -pdR /source /destination. This may also cause issues when doing an entire drive, if they are different sizes - I've never tested that. See this thread
  4. it would seem that for some reason your computer is regularly contacting the website of the world wide web consortium. Why is another question...I would suggest using the netstat command to find out what service/program is using that port.
  5. don't know...did you try removing just one of them? do they both disappear if you remove one? i had one screenlet do the same thing, and i just removed it and re-added it and it was fine. right click on the screenlet and there should be an option to delete it. i think it might just be a bug.
  6. Even if you didn't upgrade, I would still suggest rebuilding the rpm database as the errata suggests.

    UT 3 for linux?

    gotta love legal...
  8. see if you can follow the instructions here regarding disabling ipv6. Also, this thread may be useful. Give that a try, let us know if you have any questions or if it helps your issue :)
  9. I can't view your screen shot from here (thank you websense for blocking flickr...stupid work) but based on what I've read I'll make a few quick suggestions as to what the problem with updates may be: It could be that you're pointing to the wrong hdlist file, or to the wrong repository in general. This is an obvious error, and one you most likely would have caught on your own I'm sure - but it's worth a double check. If this were the case, you would most likely be seeing some sort of an error, depending on the issue. It could also be that the server you are pointing to is behind, or is having some issues of it's own. Try a different one and see if your problems continue. I suggest using the easy-urpmi link at the top of the page to get some nice, clean commands for adding repositories (copy+paste, no chance of fat-fingering it ;)). In this case, you would see no error at all - urpmi would hum along not having a clue that something was amiss. As far as one repo effecting another, this could only happen if there was an issue with how the repo was formatted (in the repo file on your system) that conflicted with what urpmi expects. This would likely give an error, so I also doubt that is your problem. Also, please don't take offense if others give advice you've already tried or are already aware of - we have no way of knowing your level of knowledge, especially not from one post, so sometimes we may seem to be "talking down" when we're actually just trying to be as simple and helpful as possible :) (if you spend more time here, we'll learn you're level of expertise, and be able to give advice more tailored to that level).
  10. Install another kernel and boot to it? I don't remember if Mandriva still hides kernels from RPMDrake or not, if they do you might have to do it from the command line...I personally haven't done it on Mandriva, at least not recently...

    DDR2 ram

I agree. While technically anything above that should scale itself down to the proper speed, you do risk running into problems especially if it's cheaper RAM. Note that when putting RAM into a system, if they are different speeds, the MB will want to run all of the RAM at the speed of the RAM in slot 1. So, if you put a 533 in one and a 667 in the other both will run at 533, but if you flip them your computer will either not boot or act very strangely (because of the attempt to force 533 to 667). I could be wrong on the details there...but the safest bet is to always go with what your motherboard asks supports.
  12. googling indicates that this may be a kernel bug...have you tried it with one of the other kernels available for 2008?
  13. If you boot up with the Mandriva install CD and go into Rescue Mode I believe there is an option to restore the Windows boot loader to the MBR, once that is done you can safely remove the linux partitions. Another option is to simply open a command prompt in windows (Start -> Run -> type "cmd" in the dialog and press enter) and run the command fixmbr, then reboot the system.
  14. the screenlets...are screenlets (not gdesklets)... ;) they play very nicely with compiz's "dashboard" feature (works like the dashboard in OSX) phunni: you're actually supposed to be under "Linux", but somehow you got moved...don't feel so special :P
  15. Ok, so is this what you are trying to determine if you can do:1) Install Linux in place of Windows (to give Linux a try) 2) Reinstall Windows in place of Linux (when want Windows back) If this is what you are looking to do, let me suggest two alternate options. Download the Mandriva One CD and write it to a CD-R (read about it here - note, you're computer will need to have a CD Burner). Then, put it into your CDROM and turn the computer off and then back on. It should boot into Mandriva Linux instead of Windows when you turn it back on. When you are done, simply shut down your computer and remove the CD - then, when you turn your computer back on, it will boot into Windows normally. If, however, you'd like to be able to choose Linux or Windows every time you turn on your computer, you'll need to learn a little about partitioning and dual-booting. Let us know if that's what you're looking to do. Last, if you want to go with your original plan, and install Linux and then re-install Windows in place of Linux, the answer is yes, but you will have to format partitions and such (Windows install should handle this).
  16. Unless you count the Windows XP SP2 cd's (no, XP didn't ship with it at release but you can buy full versions now with a firewall thanks to SP2 - not that it's any good, mind you).
  17. nope, changed background and themes then added the avant-window-navigator and screenlets.
  18. (click for larger version) also, a desktop video if you'd like (used recordMyDesktop).
  19. No offense, but how exactly is it Mandriva's fault that there are no independent peer reviews? If they were to, say, go asking people to do them - that would mean they weren't...independent...
  20. E&B was such a great game...I played it for a long while and was pretty ticked when they decided to can it. I'm hoping the ability to walk around space stations in EVE will bring it to the level that E&B was at, but I doubt they'll have cool oddities like the hidden disco rooms E&B had :D
  21. Do you mean owns as in "is better than"? (also, note that Vendetta is still considered beta by developers and players)
  22. You do have a warp drive that speeds up travel when going across a sector, and there are stargates to jump you between sectors, but travel is not instantaneous.
