  1. run gnome-theme-manager (may have to install it but not likely) and select a different theme from those available. then, you'll need to add gnome-settings-daemon to KDE's autorun (to make it run at login, so the theme gets set). gtk-qt engine is used to attempt to make a GTK theme from your current QT theme. It's ok in some cases, but some themes just don't work. It does, IIRC, allow you to change the normal GTK theme from within the KDE Control Center (meaning you can turn off it's QT-to-GTK translation and just use a real GTK theme).
  2. an approximate translation (I do not know french, I used an online translator) of the error message: I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the sysinfo package to see if that resolves the problem.

    IE6 compatibility

    1) You should upgrade to firefox 2.0 anyways (in fact it may be prudent to update to a more recent version of Mandriva) 2) What site is telling you you can't view it? The only time Firefox is "incompatible" with a website is if they are using ActiveX controls, or some other IE-specific tools. Otherwise, they're lying to you.
  4. Just for clarification purposes, Darwin is the Unix base (although largely FreeBSD-based) that OS X runs on. OS X keeps all of it's GUI applications (and some others) in /Applications/, and each one has it's own directory - though to a person using Finder to view applications, these directories would seem to be executables, as when you double click them the relevant application opens instead of the contents being revealed. This is also why the open command is used to start applications in /Applications/, because you don't really have access to a (binary?) executable (in the way you do with other OS's).
  5. Yeah, having control was the reason they made their own, IIRC. I think they did offer some of the mods/admins here some sort of incentive to help them with the forum (or some attempt to have the people here go there), but the mods/admins turned the offer down. I may be remembering incorrectly, though...
  6. Well, it's the same guidelines that are in place here, pretty much....
  7. Aye. I used this technique when creating a graphic for my friends game company (their game is still in dev, writing it all from the ground up).
  8. I'm not a WYSIWYG type...so in Linux I usually use screem for web page development, with GIMP for images. (admittedly, most of my development is done in OS X now) You probably won't be using svg's in web development, unless you create them and export them to a raster. Most browsers do not support svg.
  9. that depends. are you a coder or a designer? i.e., do you know HTML/CSS/etc. or do you use programs that auto-generate the code based on a design that you visually put together?
  10. She hm...has kids...
  11. Just for the record, I like cake.
  12. If I had seen this in the half hour between you first in second posts...i coulda helped. :D
  13. If the government wants to find out your IP address, chances are nothing short of unplugging your computer and never getting online again will stop them.
  14. aphelion just said ramfree was gowatorial!
  15. Wow...I miss a page of this thread and suddenly mysti is considering resigning and apparently some people have a problem with her starting her own project? Come on! I may have been critical of the idea, but I certainly would never think she was doing it to pull people away from this board, or that she would ever do anything to harm this board. Nor would I suggest that she shouldn't do something she wants to do!
  16. oddly enough, I don't use Mandriva because I can't dig as deep as I want to...
  17. Desktop: Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Windows (for gaming) and some other Linux installs that I don't even boot anymore. There may even be a Mandriva one, but I voted the last option anyways. Laptop: OS X (a few OS's installed under Parallels)

    invalid url

YinYeti is right, that's an error coming back from the server - in this case Myspace. Myspace is notorious for having problems with their server. There is nothing you can change on your PC that would resolve this, as your PC isn't the problem.
  19. If you are using ssh, it's probably a good idea to configure it to run on a port other than 22 (a non-reserved port, obviously) as this will cut down on brute force attacks - automated brute force scripts rarely do a scan before trying to connect to ssh, so they just hit the default port and if nothing is there move on.
  20. You didn't even need to create that. All you had to do was change the configuration settings in your player like both I and aphelion suggested. This would be a more proper solution.
  21. No. :P I like that idea. Wikipedia-style hardware list, "this has a linux driver", how to get it to work, general info on what distro's include the drivers/etc.
  22. No one here is interested in seeing it fail, nor are we interested in saying "I told you so". That's what seems to be missed. Our (I think iph and I are the main "cynics", I guess) points are intended to help. You can reject them and go on your marry way...or you can consider them seriously and likely improve the chances of this thing getting off the ground. Choice is yours (or, mysti's, I suppose). I don't particularly care, it seems my input isn't needed, or at the very least isn't wanted.
  23. I messed with a lot of different config options, but everything is working now. Two notes that may be important: with authenticating over SMTP (via saslauthd) it contacts the IMAP server. I only had IMAP-SSL enabled, by default saslauth wants regular IMAP (on port 143). Specifying the SSL port didn't resolve the problem: I assume there's a config option somewhere to make saslauth use SSL, but I didn't bother doing the research and instead just started up regular imap and things seem to be working find and dandy now.
  24. What would you expect them to do? If they choose not to run Mandriva, should we take away their status? Or perhaps we should just tell them they can't mention what distro they're using, or ask questions about it? One of the things that I've always found true at this place is that, for those who choose to run other distributions (sometimes more "hardcore", for lack of a better word), the knowledge they gain only helps in solving problems here on the board.
