  1. That works great the ads are still there but they are hardly noticable. Makes it so much easier to read what you want to read, especially on those articles where they put ads in between paragraphs. cheers
  2. cheers for that, mozilla is already doing a good job by simply letting you uncheck the "open unrequested windows" option in preferences. You forget it's doing anything untill you use a friends computer with IE and experience popup hell again! I will have to try it out your suggestion looks good :)

  4. If you like KDE use KDE if you like Gnome use Gnome If you like blackbox use it etc etc I don't see the point in changing a wm to look and behave like another, you might as well use the one that you were trying to get it to look like. That said you can change the look of your wm however you want just don't expect that i will think your desktop looks the best, because mine does.

    Load balancing...

so let me get this. You have 2 broadband connections which you want to feed to your users. Load balancing between 2 conections i don't know, there must be some info somewhere in an advanced routing howto surely this type of thing must be possible under linux. you would probably need some modest gateway/firewall/proxy machine with 3 nic's 1 nic for the switch hub, and 1 each for the connections.
  6. The last samba server i setup was a 8.1 box a year or so ago. I did it through the config files not a wizard. It's been running sweet ever since, so i have no idea how the 9.0 wizard behaves. Plus i can barely remember how i did it, thats the problem with linux, you do something once and it's usually done, whereas with windows you have to reinstall often so you remember what you did :P . I guess you could check out the etc/samba/samba.conf file before you run the wizard. maybe do a backup, run the wizard and see if it is changed. The wizard should definately be writing to this file, it's where the smb daemon gets it's settings from. You could try setting up samba using webmin https://localhost:10000 if it's installed and running. Sorry for the lack of answers, but i don't have any, will probably know when i upgrade my works file server late december but that won't help you now im afraid.
  7. You will get no help from me sorry, i have as little to do with XP as possible, so i don't know most of it's "features". I was just going to add that i have seen a similar thing in transfering from on 9.0 box to another 9.0 box using the apache server and wget or mozilla download manager on the client. Transfering mandrake iso's , would get through 100mb or so then stall, if i opened another console and did a network restart on the client it would finish the file after an variable time period of inactivity. On 100mbit ethernet lan, only machines running at the time. Truly weird and annoying.
  8. you can use webmin to start it if webmin is installed and running open a browser type in https://localhost:10000 enter username as root and your root password click on the server tab click on mysql there will be a start mysql button if mysql is not running. Or if your not afraid of the console, you could just open up a console and type is "su"(without the quotes of course) then your root password to enter super user mode. type in "service mysql start"
  9. Dosemu sipmly makes a virtual environment for a version of dos to run in under linux. You need a version of dos to use dos apps. Freedos is recommended as you don't have to pay for it/find it. You could use a m$ version of dos. The reason to use Dosemu is that you don't have to dualboot to use a dos app.
  10. Have you tried pressing the "wake" key on your keyboard?
  11. i am so hanging out for the linux client
  12. If you did not have a fstab then you computer wouldn't bootup. fstab not ftab. Is it actually a public share? or is it a user share? If its a user share you would need to authenticate via username and password. If it is a public shared eg readable by anyone without authentication then the method i stated should work.

    Quake With OpenGL

I knew there was doom and opengl doom i thought quake was already an opengl game, must have been a little too early.
  14. open up mandrake control center select the mounts section select the samba section click the search servers button select the computer with the samba share you want it will show a plug select it and click the mount point button enter a mount point or use the defined one. click ok click mount to mount it click done it will ask you if you want to write it too fstab click yes if you want it too be availible on reboot thats it i think. Hope this helps you out. Happy Mandraking
  15. turn off the power switch to the router :P My router is always on, it connects to the isp automatically. i just turn it off when im not using it. I could disconnect it by using its web interface but why bother when the on/off switch is so much quicker.
  16. yes thats a bit of a problem. you have a working floppy on the laptop? if not your stuffed i think. I have no idea how you would do it under XP but if you had linux on you pc you could share the install cds via nfs and use a boot floopy to install onto the laptop.

    Quake With OpenGL

I thought quake was a 3d accelerated game? if you have opengl working on you system then there should be no problem just use DOlsons tut run glxgears should see some cogs moving run glxinfo - look for "direct rendering"
  18. TCO linux: you can use one bought box, put it on 100 computers. the server(s) use the same box as the workstations. you require 1 full time admin maybe. you can get away with less powerfull hardware. windows: you can use one bought box for 1 computer buy 100 boxes for your work stations the servers use a different os which costs alot more, then you buy the client licences to access the servers. you require 1 full time admin(who wants to commit suicide because they spend all there time rebooting work stations instead of server work, unless there rebooting the servers of course) or more most likely. you need a P4 3ghz to use wordpad  you are far more likely to be brought down by virii gee i can see how TCO is gonna swing in m$'s favour software upgrades are about the same frequency for workstations. what you basically pay for with linux is admin time. what you pay for with windows is admin time and lots of software licenses(LOTS!!!!).

    Video Out?

backup you XF86Config-4 file before editing it. That way if you can't startup X you can use the command line to restore your old config that worked. Thanks for the tut DOlson im trying out twinview now! I'm just not sure what version of PAL we use here, i think its G, oh well theres only one way to find out(besides doing a search  ). You have a 21inch monitor :!: drool :!: My 17inch hides in a corner whinning.
  21. Excellent. And learn you will. Go for the shell! :) Edit: Don't forget to get counted and count your machine. :) http://counter.li.org/ Hey I dont call windows on a computer a "work station", more like a "crash station" Oh and they don't need any help from linux to "bite the dust", they die easily enough already, it's just that people keep trying to ressurect them. Oh and hi new guy! May your stay be enjoyable.
  22. average window users just don't want too change, they have zero interest in learning something else infact the are often strongly opposed to anything different. heavy users who like learning new things, quickly become frustrated by windows and so they leave for linux/freebsd etc. For most users ease of install is not an issue, they never installed windows they never will install an os. They come to me and ask me to fix there computers, fix there printer, install some hardware, blah blah. It often involves turning on the power switch( i am not joking). It is very depressing, often the problem and the fix is the same every time, they say it's broken i come and fix it, show them what to do. Next time it happens they come to me and ask me to fix it, i ask "did you try what i have shown you 100 times?" "no" they say. Sigh! Well screw that, not long now untill i finish my database app, then windows is gone from my work place except for one box for quickbooks, latter i will see about using crossover for that. As for my relatives and friends well, i can say i have forgotten how too use windows, i can give them tech support if they move to linux.
  23. Well i would agree to what linux/freebsd is to servers. But certainly apache is "the webserver".
  24. Don't know about this, i have always used samba as the pdc, the documentation is for mandrake 8.2 but it still should be fairly valid for 9.0. I don't think samba has changed that much. I found this page on google, not mandrake specific but should be applicable. http://www.data-based-systems.com/download...Windows2000.htm
  25. U like black and GREEN! oh well there's no accounting for taste :) It will probably turn up at kdelook soon anyway.
