  1. Heh.. I found this link from pclinuxonline. http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/ Look at the news dated 10/7/02. Mandrake 9.0 distro for XBOX seems to be available.. Anyone crazy enough to try it? :) Hmm... maybe xbox will replace dreamcast as the movable hacker tool of choice.. :)
  2. Unfortunately, tinyfirewall doesn't do a warning thing, unless you are looking at the logs. If you want to test how secure your firewall is, go to http://www.grc.com There are a few tests in there to check how secure your computer is. I never heard of clamantivirus, can you give me more information or a link to where can I find the product? I prefer fprot anyway for antivirus software.
  3. I have a feeling that you are having a bad burn. It's not just enough to check the md5sum, you need to make sure that the cds you burned are good also. One of the culprit for this is burning at too high a speed. I don't care what technology and what is the maximum speed the cdburner can do right now, the highest safe speed for burning cd is 4x for me. A 20 minute wait for the cd to finish burning is nothing to compared to the hours researching what is wrong with a cd installation or such. I suggest you burn the cds at that speed or lower, a good CDR or CDRW also help. Hope it helps.
  4. that could be part of the journaling filesystem doing. Anyway, I don't think it will hurt anything, but if you are in doubt, check whether there is any unwanted programs running. It could be some server or service that mandrake runs without you knowing it.
  5. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/brian.robinso...cs/urpmi-howto/ Read that, especially the part about urpmi.addmedia it should help a lot.. Anyway, hdlist is basically a list of all the packages in the site and their description (what it does, what is new in the version, etc). Synthesis.hdlist is smaller file which just list the packages name.
  6. Hmm.. didn't I saw this type of post a month ago? :) Anyway, the answer is the ones that work. Of course, you can just buy an SB Live! I think that card is the most extensively supported card in linux, with a few tweaking and program installing, you can even get a 4 speaker setup working. But if you just want sound to come out, I think any supported ones will do.
  7. You can download the mandrake rpms for abiword in the contrib section in cooker ftp sites. Here is an example ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrake-dev.../Mandrake/RPMS2
  8. Can you just use static ip for yourself and enter the relevant information such as the gateway (which is the XP ip) and the outside DNS ip (gotten from XP, I am not sure wheter the ipconfig command still in XP) That's what I did when mandrake 9.0 is not smart enough to use dhcp to figure out the network configuration to my friend's cablemodem router /switch .
  9. Well, I think supermount is great for read only media such as CDRom and CDRW, but not for floppy style media such as zip and floppies. I think you can edit your fstab just so that supermount is not used for the floppies and zip. Compare the /etc/fstab before and after you have disable supermount by typing supermount -i disable and supermount -i enable, then edit it appropriately.
  10. The only problem I can see from your specs is modem and sound. I am not sure what chipset is used for built in sound (realtek ALC 650 AC97 compatible? not sure what module is used for this even if supported). And I have a feeling that your modem is going to be one of those winmodems which could be iffy in terms of linux support without knowing what chipset it uses. But otherwise, your computer should be ok for linux.
  11. ns558 is used for built in gameport in the motherboard, I think (according to the help in the kernel compile, it is used for ISA or PnP gameports). Unfortunately, I don't know what chipset it used for soundcard, Terratec DMX? However, try the module pcigame instead. Hope it helps
  12. The way Creative wins and Aureal lose is because Creative is suing Aureal. Aureal wins, but went bankrupt from paying lawyers' fee. Creative then buy aureal and basically shuts them down. If that is not a dirty way to put people out of business, I don't know what is. Open sourced drivers from Creative? Yeah right, for a while the only way to get sound from newer creative sound cards is to get hacked drivers from either OSS or ALSA. At one time, the web page (opensource.creative.com) didn't get updated for ages. It wasn't until the hackers got the sound drivers working when creative people basically just "stole" their works and just host them up. Heck. Creative doesn't even have PCI soundcards until they buy Ensoniq and rebrand their cards under soundblaster name while other companies start creating pci soundcards. It is a case where marketting and size beats technical edge this time. I actually like NVidia. It is one of the few companies that comes from small fry to big giants. I still remember pre TNT Nvidia cards (Riva?) The one that bundles Panzer Dragoon. NVidia got big mainly because of good technology and good price (the fact that the king of the hill at the time, 3DFX makes blunders after blunders also help a lot) Sorry to be ranting about this. I just hate Creative Labs. It is the microsoft of the soundcards in my book.
  13. Hah! Good luck in petitioting Creative to do anything with linux. You stand a much better chance asking some other programmers (the ALSA project for example) to create that gui instead of Creative. Yeah I am bitter to Creative. This is the company that kills Aureal even though it makes a better soundcard than Creative.
  14. The cheapest one from walmart is this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp...0%3A3944%3A3951 Now, This is a via C3 computer, the specs are not exactly top of the line (not even top of the line last year) but it makes a perfect workstation or server. I heard that the ViA C3 chip is so cool running, you only need a heatsink to keep it cool (that's right, no noisy fan). All we need is to junk lindows and put mandrake in there instead. Hmm.. maybe I should send this link to my friend in Canada who is looking for a cheap computer. Any Canadian here knows how much this thing cost in Canadian dollar?
  15. Regarding the extra Mandrake CDs, I think contribs, Texstar and PLF should be included. What do you think?
  16. Well, just about everyone knows that bad news or controversial decision creates more news stories than good news or nothing is happening news. Among the United Linux news, most of the news comes from caldera or SuSE side, but rarely connectiva or Turbolinux (except its demise). Anyway, what mandrake needs is IBM partnership. HP, ever since the great gamble of joining with Compaq is not exactly making newssplash in computer world. Heck, even Mandrake's partnership with wallmart.com is not exactly making stories, too. Every reviews that uses the Wallmart less than 500 dollars computers is reviewed using lindows instead of mandrake.
  17. Master of Orion! Master of Magic! Master of ... Well.. just about any Simtech-Microprose game.. back during their peak :)
  18. Now, I agree with that statement. I only use floppy once a month. I know enough to use the mount command to mount a floppy (use right click and mount command to the floppy icon in kde).
  19. I thought that was a jolt cola can.. None of the beer can I know is red like that.

    KDE 3.1

I am not even sure the state of KDE 3.1 right now.. I think it is still in early beta.. not even RC version.. I am not going to dirty my computer with unstable packages right now.
  21. You guys are crazy.. you actually tried 2.5 kernels? I am not brave enough to try that.. not on my regular computer that is. Incidentally, any reason of why the increase in speed?
  22. Not only that, but it also hosts some emulators, icons, and themes for mandrake. When texstar didn't have the crystal icons for 9.0 beta, I just go to PLF cooker and download it from there. Texstar, PLF and contribs has become the primary mainstay in my urpmi database.

    Geforce 4

It should, at least initial XFree support. The only problem XFree has is with GeForce 4TI (Real GeForce 4) which requires the NVidia drivers.

    ATI Radeon 9000

Radeons can be a kick in the head to make worth in linux (as I found earlier), but doable. Just need the DRI driver and you can make it work in X The driver should be available here http://dri.sourceforge.net/
  25. You think that Enterprise use Microsoft products in its computers? Not likely.. Although with all the problems Enterprise is having, maybe...
