  1. Yeah, this is a factor too, but to some extent ;) since simplicity and ease of use is an important factor too :)
  2. I have tried many edtiors and ide on linux, but i have not seen an good alternative(at least for me) providing the same "comfort" as textpad.. or even dev cpp.. The screem seems interesting though..thanks! Side note Those who like something like textpad..give a try to http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html It supports a wide variety of languages (C/C++, C#, Java, PHP..etc..) and you can even compile your codes with it.. I have just tried it.. seems nice..but not enough close to texpad alas! (And, i have a problem, it is not finding the javac command.. and till now i have not been able to solve this :( ) Regards!
  3. yeah.. i also tried mono, but was not really satisfied with. And things that is at times frustrating, is that we do not really have good stuffs like: 1) Bloodshed Software - Dev-C++ 2) Textpad and other similar things that are so helpful and useful for programmers or just to do some programming on linux... I think linux programmers should have tried something in this way...this would be so great!! Let's hope for the best!! ;)
  4. Hello dear mandriva friends.. Has anyone of you already tried LFS? Those who have, could you please try to describe your opinions and experience while doing this.. things you find interesting, things which made you say: "why did i started lfs.." And any advice/hint? Thanks for your kind attention, wakish
  5. Wow!!! They are going at a frightening speed these tech-people :P
  6. hey common i respect my pc ;) so obviously i don't cut its power off or grabbing the power cable to run wherever you said..heheh:lol2: Actually, my cousin came at my place and he wanted to use msn..i showed him gaim...etc...but i forgot to tell him that my system was on linux.. so i guessed he messed my things up a bit...even my backgroud was missing :( those kiddies.... takes on my nerves... but the rest was still shining..afterall, it's linux :) scarecrow your hints was perfect!! Thanks! Cheers!
  7. When my system starts, each time it is "restoring session". Why? I have not log-off any account before shutting down.. i did evrything as usual..but since the 2 recent days, i'm getting this thing... any help with this?
  8. Well, AVG is not worth the hastle in linux!!! I think it has to make some improvements for its Linux version. I'm going to uninstall it. BUT it's very nice for Windows!
  9. Hello everyone! I heard many good thing about AVG free edition and i set out to try it just now on mandriva. The installation went fine, but i'm having the following: 1) permission problem when i click on "Update". It says Update process failed.. Reason: Sorry, you do not have permission to execute avgupdate 2) For its on-access Email scanner, it needs the package Dazuko Is it ok to install this package? 3) I have set AVG to start on boot. It's running, but i do not see its icon on my start-up icons. Why? Regards!
  10. Hi arctic...i just noticed you wrote the 2nd part :P It's a GOOD job arctic!! I think now with these balanced views, it will be more easy for people(especially newbies) to decide if they will want to give FC5 a go or not... Thanks for taking time and sharing your experience and views with us arctic! It's always nice to be here in this forum where people are really sharing, participating, talking and helping so much! Cheers MandrivaUsers.org! B)

    Internet Browser

Yeah, opera is really getting better and better I seen so much debate on using other browsers..but personally, out of those browsers, opera is really nice! (at least for me!)
  12. i think there are many free books on linux and tutorials on the net..just google for them and pick one for your choice..it's all there ;)
  13. Another way to do this "without caddys" is to use a 3rd party partitioner/boot manager! I have 2hard disks and i'm able to do what you want very simply with such a program..but provided you want to spend some time understanding how a boot manager work. This is not really difficult if you really put in the effort to understand.. Spend some time googling for Partitioners with and/or Boot Managers and see which one will be of best help to you. For me the best one i found was the free Ranish Partition Manager - RPM This small program is far the BEST one out there for programs of its type and yet it's FREE.. I was like you new to linux..and i was confused about such things..but believe me it's not difficult..just read a bit ;) You just have to connect your hard drives internally to your IDE cable and then you can view and manipulate each of them through the RPM and select which hard drive you want to use for your job... This link might be useful: => How to use RPM and multi-boot systems Hope i could help a bit ;) Cheers!

what's the extra features/differences of the full AVG compared to the free version?
  18. Hi.. for the partitioning, a 3rd party partioner/boot manager is also helpful ;) Else, coming to your subject, i was a totally new linux user too when i started some months ago...and from that point of view i can tell you that Mandriva 2006 and this forum is the BEST for linux new-comers! Do not hesitate to ask questions that you may have, these people here are really as nice as Gowator has mentioned above. A side note: If you are going to use both windows and mandriva, do make a "common" partition which you can use/see from both mandriva and windows..this will be very needy! (make that partition FAT32) Enjoy!
  19. ok guppetto! will try.. I have also noted that when i unistalled Kat, my office documents in windows format (that in *.doc, *.ppt ..etc) was loading more faster than before with openOffice.. The small little cat, i mean Kat was really naughty
  20. Well this is my opinion: First of all, linux is NOT windows! Before deciding whether you will get afraid of linux or not; You should ask yourself why you are going for linux!!! If it is just to boast yourself about using linux, then linux is NOT for you! If you continue this way, linux will frighten you Linux, as is, is GOOD despite some of you here says that you need to do many "things" in command style. Man linux is not spoon-feeding like windows!! Linux is for those who has the gut to have an independent philosophy/way of doings things, for those who really want to learn things and for those who has the courage to accept certain things while making some compromise*. Linux provide the users with a good help by "doing things in command style". Linux, in this respect, makes people learn and learn by doing it yourself! Making an analogy, Windows urges people to buy an advertised product almost blindly, while linux gives buyers the choice of chosing what product will actually suit your need! Windows makes you do things blindly, while linux makes you almost think what, why and how you are doing this! (did i hear someone say not exactly? well i said almost! :) ) Yeah, there is no denying that you have many ravishing and irrestible software for Windows which are actually not there for Linux(* this is among the compromise you need to accept). But wait, re-consider "why am i using linux?" and with this objective in mind, you will see that these things will be subjective compared to those great things that you can do/will benefit! Linux in itself will give you more personal satisfaction while using it with time..nothing comes straight away.. keep diving in linux forums, like this one, and keep perseverance, you will finally see that linux is more than just "the Linux you have been thinking of" :) Conclusion: ==> Before using linux, analyse: 1) why i'm going to use it 2) what can linux do for me 3) what linux cannot do for me 4) If i'm confident about using linux, what distro will i choose for my first steps 4) make a final decision and enjoy! Regards, wakish **************************** Hey artic i just read the link you have provided, well everything is explained there and i think it's a must to read for people concerned..very nice link indeed!!!
  21. But i'm using Mandriva 2006, not found the ext3 :(  Anywayz, that does not matter, does it?
  22. well, that distro is free in magasins man.. Lol Ixthusdan..heheh..nice comment! By the way, i alo saw that Mandriva formats its native partition in ext2 while PCQLinux2006 in ext3
  23. I think a good distro should not go everywhere shouting "I'm the best in town" like ubuntu is doing, perhaps?.. but instead should aim at providing the philosophy that "WE (Linux communities or distros) are the best in making great effort in providing what we are providing and in our common aim! (despite being different branches (distros), all distros come from the same root (linux kernel). Well, as some of you may know, i'm new to linux, but this is what i have understood from my point of view while integrating this wonderful linux community since some months now. If i made any mistake there, correct me and please don't be offended. Kind Regards!
  24. woow..it seems nice and full of suspense..lol eager and curious to know how it would be B) Since it is targeting at "ease of use" for a pc", i guess there is full implementation of HCI to make a really user-friendly distro..very curious to see that.. it would perhaps emphazise more on that aspect than in providing a variety of softwares..etc.. Basically perhaps a simple, easy to use linux based pc for anyone..to ease "pc learning process" ??!! Thanks for the info Ixthusdan! (btw if you happen to try the beta soon, lets us know about it)
  25. sry Ixthusdan, i made the wrong use of the word "source" here..but my intention was to use it like you said for the forum ;) Yeah, it seems to be a clone..with many features..i think there are feautres taken from fedora, mepis and suse..but i'm not sure.. By the way, how can that distro be distributed and have a forum when it violates the GPL as you said??? Well, i loaded it only out of curiosity dude ;) I always have a small spare partition to test new distro whenver i have the chance to get one :) So that distro is on that partition..but will not be there for long :P Whereas Mandriva is my main distro :D
