  1. Thanks for the reply. Is there some way of explaining that a little better? I feel abit ignorant for saying it, but i'm really new to linux. Sorry.
  2. Sorry for the delay in replying. The model is Travelmate 2356xm.
  3. I've got an Acer travelmate series laptop with a touch pad mouse control. I'm struggling to find how to turn the pad off. i.e tapping the pad acts as a mouse click. It's frustrating the hell out of me! ;)
  4. If it's just info your after you can't go far wrong with the guys at MUB, i wouldn't of got anywhere without this site and it's members. As your already here i'm sure you've worked that out already........ :D
  5. Great i'll try again..............i'm sure this isn't the last you've heard of me! I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.
  6. I was kind of expecting the installation to be easier than it was, i also did it with a stinking hangover one sunday morning. ;) . Not the best of ideas really. How easy it to start again? Also is there a way to partition my hard drive prior to the installation as i wasn't 100% sure i'd done that part right? I've seen a couple of walk through help guides for the installation process, is there a particular one you could recomend? Thanks for all your advice.
  7. I've entered "whereis updatedb". It comes back with"updatedb:" I enter "rpm -qf /usr/bin/updatedb" It comes back with "no such file or directory" I don't know if it matters or not but when shutting down off linux two items are showing as failed; "saving random speed" and "unmounting file systems"
  8. These things i'm entering (updatedb, startx etc) what do they relate to?
  9. Right......tried that now. The first parts ok up until entering updatedb (all one word). It's still comin up with "bash: updated b: comand not found.
  10. Typed in "SU" after login and password. It then requests password again. Entered password. It then displays [root@localhost alistair] # I entered "updated b". It came back with "bash: updated b: comand not found.
  11. I've tried that now, it's coming up with comand not found? I wasn't a hundred percent sure about the way mandriva had installed is it straight forward to uninstall and start again or should i push on and try and resolve the problems. I think i was expecting to be further on than i am.
  12. Thanks for the reply...... Whats a GUI? ;) Also should i type startx after alistair@localhost~]$?
  13. I think i'm making progress with my mandriva install. When i start up now i get a screen with a choice of linux, failsafe or windows. I select linux, it comes up with login and password, no problem....... Then it comes up with alistair@localhost~]$followed by the flashing curser? Unsure as to what this means? Also when i shutdown off linux it scrolls through some checks followed by "passed" or "failed" i'm getting some "failed" is this ok or have i installed something wrong? Thanks in advance
  14. I'll be installing Mandriva on my laptop for a start and will run windows on it aswell. Is the partioning straight forward? Is it easy to swap between the two os's? Also i do some programing at work with plc's (Allen Bradley, Telemechanique zelio 2). Can Linux do this kind of stuff? So many questions......................you'll get sick of me! ;)
  15. Thanks for your replies. It's good to know that there are other users out there prepeared to offer there time to support other Linux users. As a newcomer to this whole thing i'm just dead keen to get a linux distrabution on my pc. At the same time though i want to know a little bit more about how my os works and learn more about pcs in the process. I've ordered my 6 disk limited edition version of mandriva 2006 now. s i'm sure i'll be here again very shortly. I think i've got alot to learn so best go and start reading up. Hopefully one day i'll be able to offr someone else advice about Linux. Thanks again
