  1. My experience here has been totaly different. I agree with spiedra. I have found that mozplougger is the crappiest solution I've ever seen. I have found that it's FAR better to remove mozplugger and install the proper apps. Then, when you click a link and it asks to open or save, choose open and the right program and it will remember the correct helper app in the future. I did not have to do any of the stuff these guys are talking about. Just remove mozplugger, install the realplayer rpm from Real.com, NOT the plf garbage, and that's it. The isntaller that runs automaticaly after the rpm install sets up the pluggin for you. I have had the sme experience with flash. Just download and install the actual macromedia package and life is good.
  2. I think that what he is refering to is the .0/.1/.2 release schedule. .0 is a major version release, .1 is bug fixes and .2 is final. I know that's not totaly accurite, but that is the fealing of it. I have found that the .2 releases are always best. I will install 10, but just the cheap-bytes version, same with 10.1, and then when it rolls around, I'll buy 10.2 powerpack on DVD.
  3. Well, it sounds fantastic, but due to a lack of bandwidth or money and some of the litle things you mentioned, I will probably stick to my original plan. THat is, from now on I'm only going to bother with the ".2" releases of mandrake. From your review, it sounds like they've fixed basicaly all the things I wished were better before. No more SCSI emulation required, lower cpu load in k3b, autoplay of media disks, cleaner simpler MCC, faster kde. WHat more could you ask for? Plus kmix now has options for advanced 3d in soundcards and it all looks great. I tell you one thing, when 10.2 comes round, I think it'll be time for me to buy another power-pack.

    Legends problem

I haven't played in a few weeks, but last time I was on there were many servers with many players. If you can't find any servers at all, there's something else going on.
  5. You also have to remember, as scoopy eluded to, there's a lot of stuff out there for linux and there is just no way to include it all. I don't know many folks that use flux-box, especialy at home on a day to day basis, and home use is what the download edition is aimed at. Frankly, I don't think skipping fluxbox was nearly as a big of a deal as skipping the 2.4.22 kernel source. Everyone needs that.
  6. like the title says, I'm using kde and while 'most' apps detect that I'm using kde and launch kprinter, some use their own. The one I am most concerned with is the Gimp as there is not gimp-print filter for my printer but it works flawlessly with everything else. So, how do I make the Gimp use kprinter?
  7. Everything on the HP psc 1210 except ink levels work. As for the easier than Windows instation, that's one of my favorite things about linux. When it works, it realy works.
  8. I have consistentlyhad the exact same problem. SImple solution. Step 1: Uninstall mozplugger. Step2: Install RealPlayer for Linux. It's a free download. If you do a search on this forum you should be able to find a link in less than 60 seconds. Step 3: Enjoy.
  9. I guess you could call me a linux only user. I do technicaly use windows XP, but that's only on my Fiance's laptop, which has an ATI video card that doesn't work very well and PC cards that don't work at all under linux. How'd I do it? Poorly, many times until I figured it out. My first attempt at linux was one of the earliest releases of Lycoris which was VERY green at the time as a distro and I was soured for a couple years. Then I tried Mandrake 9.0 because I heard it was supposed to be a big update. Sure enough it was and I stuck with it, dual booting with XP for a couple months and then I stopped being an idiot, bought copy's of maple and some of my other criticle software, and started with a clean install of Mandrake and I have enver looked back. Why. Stability, ease of use (once configured), responsiveness, customizability, speed, flexability, and most of all, the community. There is no windows community. People use it, there's some support forum filled with 14 year old geeks with no social skills that would rather mock than help and that's pretty much it.
  10. I conect with kppp. It's very painless. very similar in fact to a DUN connection in windows.
  11. I voted "other" because I have a second computer running WindowsXP, with mandrake on my main box. Basicaly, I can't stand dual booting and I reccomend that nobody do it unless you absolutely must.

    nVidia or ATI?

    I stand corrected.
  13. Glad there's a new version. I'll have to check it out. I did get the old one working and it's a lot of fun. I can only imagine this will be even better.

    nVidia or ATI?

I can't understand how anyone would say ATI when there is NO support for 3d in linux on most of their cards. I just don't understand. The question is what is best overall in Windows AND Linux.
  15. SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO SOYO!!!!!! I can't say it enough times. For the love of all things good and right forget everthing anyone else has told you and buy a Soyo motherboard. you can check them out at http://www.soyo.com I have built many systems and the 8 that I have built on Soyo motherboards have been best recieved and had the very fewest problems which greatly increased my profit margin. I can not express to you the joy that is working on a soyo motherboard. They fully support All versions fo Windows and Linux, out perform andything I can find and they look great for a show computer like what you are thinking of with the clear side panel. As if all that wasn't enough, they are also VERY reasonaby priced when compared to boards with similar features. Not cheap, but very reasonable. My second sugestion is this. Buy EVERYTHING at http://www.newegg.com I won't buy hardware anywhere else.

    nVidia or ATI?

Yeah, nVidia is REALY great about supporting linux. I know a lot of people beg for the source code, but Im okay with a tainted kernel. I also still totaly dissagree about the "better rounded" comments. My Nvidia card has absolutely fantastic 2d acceleration. I can play a 3d game and watch a dvd at the same time with GREAT frame rates.

    nVidia or ATI?

For me, there's no discussion. nVidia all the way. Why you ask? Simple. They work. They always work under windows and linux. nVidia released about 5 or 6 driver's a year. At firs you might think that's an indication of endless bugs in the drivers, but it's not. What it means is that they are ALWAYS releasing new driver, they are always trying to sqeaze out a litle more stability or proformance. I have nothing against ATI. They make good stuff. But for me, nvidia just offers more. I totaly dissagree about the "better rounded comment" nvidia cards are very well designed and have a nice rounded feature set. If anything ATI is the one with the history of stupid cards like the All-in-Wonder, and they've released several 'ultra0stripped down cards too. Of course, nobody should buy an nvidia or an ATI. Check this card out http://www.lamerkatz.com/stories/images/bitchin.jpg That's the best card i've ever seen!
  18. My bad. You were plenty clear, I was just being too lazy to pay enough attention. I am sorry. To be more clear, as far as I know, you can't do that. Hopefully someone here can prove me wrong, but for now, I think you're stuck. THat's the main reason I never put it down the side is that particular function is not very well implemented THe only thing I can think of, which is not what you want, is that if you make the bar REALY thick, they become almost usefull again. I know that's not what you mean, but give it a try, it might be an O.K. compromize.
  19. 3 word my friend Linux From Scratch If it's working that well for you, it's time. I started losing my hair at 15, if your's is growing back you need more PC stress.
  20. I believe you can drag it there, and if not, just right click on it and configure it. There's a a whole page of options just for location and alignment. Not hard to find if you look. You could also open up the K menu and go to configure and then 'configure your desktop' and somewhere in that app is the same page of settings.
  21. It goes without saying that it would be a heck of a lot easier if you could just figure out what serial port you have it connected to and remember that tty numbers are 1 lower than windows serial port numbers, i.e. Com port 1 is ttys0, and com 5 is ttys4 and so on. If you have serial ports on the back of your computer, they ARE ttys0 and ttys1
  22. First of all, creating that link WILL create /dev/modem, and you CAN'T create /dev/ttySX There's an easy way to figure all this out 1. Intall kppp just open up the mandrake controll center, go to the software tab, click on 'add software' and search for kppp in the search box. 2. run kppp it should show up in your menu, if it doesn't, just open a console and enter kppp Ask later how to fix your menu if you don't know how. 3. look around in kppp. It's pretty straight forward. There are two options you need to find. The first is a menu that lets you pick where the modem is. You can pick /dev/ttySX or /dev/modem. The other thing you need to find, is the "query modem" button. 4. One at a time try each tty and try to query the modem. If it's the wrong port, you will get no response or all empty fields. If it's the right port, you'll get a bunch of crap you don't understand. Once you know what tty you're on, let's say ttyS5, you need to open a terminal and do three things (I'm assuming ttyS5 which is almost certainly wrong) 'su' 'rm /dev/modem' 'ln -s /dev/ttyS4 /dev/modem ' if you do that, you will be done.
  23. WHat nvidia driver are you using? I'm guessing you are using a motherboard with a VIA chipset and an nvidia driver older than 5336. Am I right? the 5336 is supposed to fix random AGP errors with via shipset mobo's. Give it a try
  24. If you are new to mandrake, or more importantly, if you're new to linux, don't bother with CVS or ftp or any other confusing stupid thing. Just open up the Mandrake Control Center and go to the software management page and click the link for adding software. If you search for wine as michel first sugested, you will find 2 or 3 packages. Just select and install them all and wine will be running flawlessley. If you find that wine doesn't work at all, there is a folder in your home directory called .wine It's a hidden folder, so you'll need to enable hidden files or manualy enter the folder in the address bar. If that's a litle above your head, come back here and say so. I or someone else will explain better. Anyway, there is a config file in that folder that you can open with your favorite text editor and edit. It's very well commented so you shouldn't have much trouble configureing it. Of course, it may work out of the box with no config anyway.
  25. You guy's are right about the whole 'negative ads' hurting MS. MOst people don't like negative ads. Regardless of your particular political affiliation, Howard Dean destroyed his campagne with negative ads. Before the Iowa primary, he was considered a shoe in for the democratic nomination. But when they went there, he started a realy nasty slam campagne against his oppenents and what happened? He's basicaly out of the running. MS can slam all they want, all it will do is make more companies look into linux.
