Oh, yes I forgot on this, the usernames are mostly irrelevant, the UIDs are what matters, but since I have all users on my systems configured with the same ID's (LDAP is your friend), I did not think of this, sorry
  2. your problem could be related to acpi, seems that it does not really boot at all maybe try booting with the noacpi option: at the bootloader screen press CTRL, ALT or Shift (not sure yet which is the right key), then you should get a boot-prompt, there type noacpi if your system boots after that, then your problems are related to acpi
  3. As far as I know thunderbird is not correctly installed by mandy 2006 See http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main...Linux2006Errata Issues with Mozilla based software when set up by the installer maybe your problem is related to this. You could uninstall firefox and thunderbird and reinstall them again for ram and cpu-usage optimization I don't think that something like this is really needed on linux For the midi problem I would recommend to open a new topic for this (sorry can't help you with the midi problem) btw. I'm not a native english speaker, as many others here, so no problem
  4. Ok, some of you might be bored by this, but lastly I often heard: Mandriva is not free, they try to lock you in the club, yadda, yadda... and so on (vomit) To set some urban legends straight: Mandriva is as free as it was before ! There is a free edition that has all the non-GPL-stuff removed, but is otherwise fully functional (maybe its good to have a broadband connection, since some parts have to be downloaded from the internet, but these are mainly somewhat exotic server apps) OpenOffice 2 is in contribs, it's a pre-version, but 1) it works very well 2) Fedora Core 4, Suse 10 and Ubuntu 5.10 ship pre-versions either Mandriva 2006: OOo 1.9-129 FC4: OOo 1.9-104 Suse 10: OOo 1.9-125 or 129 Ubuntu: OOo 1.9-125 or 129 3) this was the version available when Mandriva 2006 came out For the final OOo2 you don't need to join the club, just download it from OOo's site (it's rpm-based now, there is an install-guide within the package, which tells you how to do it, there is a rpm that creates the menu entries too) For Flash-player, Adobe-Reader and Java there are free replacements, if you don't know how to install them go to artee's site: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/ he has put together some really usefull instructions on this If you want Flash-player, Adobe-Reader and Java go to macromedia, Adobe, Sun, they have rpms that are fairly easy to install for nvidia and ati-drivers, please don't blame mandriva, blame ati and nvidia for the somewhat difficult install and the closed-source nature of their drivers Freedom in the Open Source world means freedom of choice, not getting everything for nil Final Point: the mere existence of PCLinuxOS shows that Mandriva indeed is free (since PCLOS is based on Mandriva), I don' think Texstar would have taken Mandriva as base otherwise If you don't have broadband connection, there are CD-Vendors as well, where you can get the entire package on CDs, in Germany for example it's http://liniso.de/
  5. This really sucks, why doesn't it do like every webbroser does with an image it can't find, show a placeholder, that would be much better than crashing
  6. Isn't the open document format some form of xml, maybe you can open it in a text editor and find the link and delete it ?
  7. Is there any possibilty to create virtual block devices, like virtual cd drives in windows seems I found something: http://www.timfanelli.com/tags/linux http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/1387/
  8. go to Mandriva Control Center > Systemstart (don't know the english name, my system is not english, but should be the last tab on the left) > graphical boot theme ??? (monitor icon with colors) in there must be an entry "show design in console", uncheck this and you just have a standard console without background
  9. did you edit fstab by hand ? the managed entry is by udev, which manages hotplugged hardware, but why it remounts your harddisk is a bit strange maybe you should mount your harddisk through the MCC and let it edit the fstab, sometimes mandy has the bad habbit to ignore hand edited entries in some config-files
  10. and they have a great game engine (torque engine), that is the heart of my all-time favourite game (tribes 2)
  11. I have a winbox just for gaming and not much else, since windows is not much more than a toy doll for me, the rest of my boxes (where I do my actual work) are windows-free The same reason why I use linux
  12. udev is the system service that manages hardware devices, in your case it mounted the harddisk with the options you see now in your /etc/fstab since this is an automatic process editing /etc/fstab does not help much, since this line will always be overwritten when you plugin the drive the next time for desktop icons to appear on your desktop: if I'm right KDE in mandy is configured not to show devices on your desktop, but this can be changed in kcontrol (sorry I don't have an english version at the moment, so I can't tell you where to find it exactly)
  13. you need the win32, xine-win32, libxine and xine-plugins from plf to make it work be sure that you are connected to the internet and have a plf-repository set up, then do urpmi xine-win32 urpmi will fetch the needed files for you
  14. After the install you can direct rpmdrake to one of the distribution sources and have all packages at hand, so you won't need the cds later if you want to install additional packages after installation I never did a ftp-install, but doesn't the installer have a partitioning tool there too ??? just wondering
  15. In the generic section of the monitor list you can find all generic flat panels, choose the one with the correct resolution and you'll be fine, you don't need to bother about the refresh rates, they will be configured correctly as scarecrow said already 60 Hz is sufficient for a LCD
  16. Don't know for sure about 2005, but if I remember correctly for 2006 there is only one database server on the CDs (don't know if it's postgre or mysql though), proftp and some apache-packages aren't included, too, others I don't know; I just installed it, connected to the Internet, told it where to get the installation sources and never ever used the CDs since sure for someone not on broadband this might be a problem, maybe mandriva should think of a fourth CD in the Free Edition (like FC4)
  17. If you do a fresh install you can do 10 GB / 1 GB swap 50 GB /home /home is where you propably store the most (your private) stuff like mp3's, videos /usr will be included in / in this setup, but for a non-server system I see no reason why it should be seperate if you really like to have a seperate /usr (which means Unix System Root btw) make sure it has enough place, since many applications install their files (libraries and such things) in it give it about 2 to 5 GB, depending on what you want to install on your box 5 GB / 1 GB swap 5 GB /usr 50 GB /home could be a setup with a seperate /usr my /usr is now at 1.3 GB, and I have a fairly typical Office-install with KDE, Gnome, OOo and some other apps
  18. Since your reviews are way better, I will do :D Yes in FC there is just a globe too Sidenote 1: tooltips, hover the mouse upon the Icon and you will be told what it is Sidenote 2: I didn't like the globe and changed it by the firefox logo from a Suse install on another box, so there is really no problem, just take some other icons..., but maybe he did not know where to put them (not that it would have been such a problem to find the right place) Icons and styles are just very personal preferences but that's enough bashing for now
  19. Ok, I did some little bash-scripting some time ago, but I DON'T WANT to be a guru (it's so cold and lonely at the top :D ) and YES this post shows that I don't have something more intelligent to do (it's really boring to watch gftp downloading the complete mandriva 2006)
  20. I had a similar problem with pppoe, it always wanted to connect at startup, even if I told it not to, to solve this I just have two network profiles one with pppoe and one without you can override the network start at boot (I think it's by pressing CTRL-c) maybe you must remove eth0 too and then reconfigure your entire setup (I had to do this to get my network working again after messing with pppoe) seems mandriva does not like those pppoe-dialup connections very much (at least not the scrappy ones in Germany :D )
  21. this could be related to msec which enforces some rules on file and directory permissions depending on your chosen security level. you could add a user defined entry for your directory with the permissions you need open the Mandriva control center (terminal-like icon with red wrench), under security (there is an icon of a folder with a lock in front) then add a custom rule, ok, after that run msec as root in the terminal now your settings should last sorry, sitting in front of a german-speaking comp at the moment, so I don't have the exact labeling of the icons
  22. on both types of drives DMA is standard and you can't influence this, sorry I was a bit unclear on this Plextor has a SATA-DVD-Burner out, which seems to be a really nice piece of hardware
  23. Began with Mandrake 8.1 in 2001 and liked it, have been with Mandy since, although I have tried every Distro I could get my Hands on, but since I'm a gaming fan I still have a winbox (please don't shoot me :D ) forgot to mention: I was 26 when I started with Linux
  24. I miss an entry called: "I know how to use the CLI, but since I'm so lazy I just prefer to use the GUI tools" :D Seriously spoken: both have their pro's and cons and I use them both
  25. If you have the package cursor_themes installed it is easy, just start choose_cursor as root from a console and it installs your cursor theme for all users and all desktop environments
