  1. At your log in screen select for the 'session type' drak3d. When the dialog opens select 'no 3d effects' . Reboot, at the log in screen for your 'session type' change it it to what you normally use and you should be able to log in again.
  2. I'm not too sure on this, but one thing you can try is boot into safe mode at the command prompt type init 3 [enter] and see if your keyboard is still working by logging in with your normal login name and password at the next command prompt. If that is successful then your problem would seem to be with KDE. I'll need to think about it a bit more. Post back with your results.
  3. Hello there, from your description it sounds like your xorg.conf has been hosed a little. I'm not sure about your experience with Linux, but if you start up in safe mode (be careful here as you are logged in as root ), type the following at the command prompt less /etc/X11/xorg.conf [enter] you should see the contents of your xorg.conf. Page up and down until you see the section something similar to Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "gb" Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin" EndSection If you have a section similar to the above scroll to the end of the file and look for the following Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" Screen "screen1" EndSection If either of the sections are fowled up particularly the input section you will need to put it right. If you are comfortable with editing the xorg.conf file then do so, reboot and you should have a working keyboard which you can fine tune later. If you do not know how to edit files from the command line then post back stating so.
  4. Although you say the boot themes are installed you don't say what theme has been selected in the boot section of mcc. Maybe you have text only selected, or am I missing the point?
  5. You would appear to have a problem, and, rather than deleting/rotating your log I would be inclined to find the cause of such a large file. The contents of the file should give you clues. Remember theses logfiles are there for reference, so don't just discard that reference, find the cause first.
  6. You can set Firefox fonts to whatever suits you, you can also set the minmum font size for those sites that insist on using tiny fonts. All this is set in your preferences within Firefox. As John says usually the default fonts are quite sufficient although with my not so good eyesight I have to set the minimum font size to about 11px. Up until the latest release of Firefox I found importing MS fonts the better option as this is what most sites set their web pages with, but with the later version I use the default fonts and they look quite good.
  7. Glad it's all sorted Peter. I'll give the update a try as I've just done all the updates.
  8. Your actions were as intended, the output to postscript does the conversions before sending to the printer which usually sorts out any abnormalities. Seeing as that didn't work you could try a print preview in kpdf and see if it looks right. Other than that I'm out of ideas, sorry.
  9. Welcome Peter. I have a Samsung ML-1510 and depending on the content of a 'pdf sometimes I have to print to a postscript file and then print that to the printer. It seems like PDF's are not handled correctly or there is oddities in the file itself. I know it's printing twice but give that a try. Good Luck.
  10. You can swap laptops with me if you like, mine only hibernates when I close the lid twice  This is on a Toshiba Satellite. Anyway if you are using kpowersave there are options as to what you want the machine to do when certain buttons are pressed. At least that is the idea.
  11. Sorry but your link is pointing to 'do new post' and not a review! ;)
  12. Please be more specific as to which icon you are talking about.
  13. Sorry for not being precise, yes it is a PCMCIA card. Built in wireless wasn't around when this machine as on the market.
  14. I also run a laptop with a Belkin card without any problems. I do have a Sitecom usb card which is not supported and I cannot get that to work under Linux at all. The laptop is a rather old Toshiba Sattelite but works just fine. I have no experience with the machine you are getting so no comment there.
  15. Hello Eric, what works for me is kdenlive. You can separate the audio and re-sync it with the video, chop and change any part of the clip. Although it is still being developed all the essential bits are complete and work well.
  16. Hello and welcome, to find your compiler(s) and supporting libraries open 'Configure Your Computer' aka MCC In the left hand panel select Development. You will then get a list of compilers and supporting libraries. Just click on what you are looking for and you will get a list in the right hand panel. You should be able to find all you need in this panel.
  17. I see you are using AC'97 in which case if you are using kmix check that all switches in your mixer are turned off except for video.
  18. The absence of a complaint from the above command means the module did load. Do you see the module listed with lsmod
  19. Do you have more than one sound card in your machine? Not necessarily active. It sounds like apps are either mapping to the wrong device or card.
  20. I think you are getting the Idea of this Linux world now Zac. Just remember that apart from all the knowledgeable and helpful people on this forum you have a good friend in Google. Sometimes it is as extensive as the documentation supplied with Windows. Also there is Mandriva Club, that is another good source of information. Anything you find that is not available on this forum you can then share with us. Sorry for going O/T but I thought it worth mentioning. :)
  21. Hello there, I am going to ask a silly question here but have you checked the sound is NOT muted on the player window. In fact do you see the audio slider at all. I use both Realplayer and Helix with Realplayer codecs without any problems. Other than that no idea sorry!
  22. I was just wondering, reading your last post, did you know where to find everything in windows when your first started? or are you still finding little pieces? :P The way I see things with the Linux community is that advice and help are freely available, you are not haning on the end of a telephone line, or buying books to get the answers you need. Ask the question and you will nearly always get the answer you are looking for.
  23. On the brighter side John you could have paid big bucks for a new release and that new release broke several of your peripherals causing you to buy new ones just because the suppliers of those peripherals have not updated their software and have no intention of doing so. I have just been reading that users of windows vista are in that situation now. That would really dent anyone's credibility. Here you get really helpful advice and the willingness to put things right that can be put right. I think that alone is a good selling point for Mandriva and maybe other distros.
  24. Sorry to hear you are having your problems John, I've not tried firewire nor soundblaster so I can't comment on them. However I do have the glow window decorations installed by Kde. I have a logitech bluetooth mouse with back & forwards buttons and a few more and all of them worked out of the box.
