  1. If you take a look in /etc/X11/ you should find a backup or two that are made when you install Nvidia drivers, if they are there you could rename one that works back to xorg.conf. Please note the uppercase X.
  2. As root in a console type lsmod and make sure sound modules are loaded.
  3. As far as I am aware of the answer is no. When you think about it if you were able to do such a thing then anybody with a USB key could come along and wipe your entire system. Ouch. You should be able to carry out limited settings and things within your user account, but that is about all. What gets set-up by the system you boot up with is what you get, for the afore mentioned reason. Unless anybody knows different that's how it is.
  4. From your description I gather you are booting from a live disc, if this is so then there are limitations on what you can do with the accounts that you set up. It is not the same as having the operating system installed on the machine. Although I am not all that clued up on the live version of mandriva I would think this may be the root of your problems. If you are booting from an installed version that's a different matter. It would appear that your sound system is not set up correctly. A bit more information on your set-up would help us get things going for you. Welcome to MUB by the way.
  5. The quick answer is yes it will replace the USB modem and should be better for it. Setting up the connection depends on the provider but there should be plenty of information at Pipex. I did notice it was also a router, but once again should be straight forward to set up via the web interface especially if there is only one computer involved. Rest easy there should be no surprises. :)
  6. I've just downloaded the rpm from the repos which it states is a release candidate and the fonts on all pages render correctly now, much better for these poor eyes. The previous version was downloaded from Mozilla and displayed just what ffi was getting. The two example pages that were given as examples were noticeably different. I have now turned on anti aliasing and the quality has improved even further. One thing I haven't done is install windows fonts. Many sites use these fonts and the substitutes are not quite as good. Could it be that Ubuntu have used windows fonts on one of their pages?
  7. Well I've just tried FF3 and almost immediately changed back to V2. As you say FFI the fonts are shocking. All the eyecandy does not improve on the looks either, but that may be me. I didn't stay with it long enough to try and like it. No back I came to a browser I can read the pages comfortably.
  8. Has the correct driver been assigned to the printer I wonder? Have you tried setting up the printer via the HTML setup interface? The web interface is more helpful for setting up printers than drakconf, especially when it comes to networked printers.
  9. Thank you Ian. The dope that I am I misinterpreted what I was supposed to do. I just had the brainwave of adding my normal login name to the sudoers file and lo and behold it now works. What I was doing was entering my root password. I did try my normal login password but got a very curt reply that I was to be reported to the authorities. :o Thank you for the reply and you were correct,. Sorted.
  10. As the title says even when the correct password is entered sudo rejects it. I have been to the sudo website and had a look at the faq and sure enough the question has been asked. The answer is that the 'config.h' maybe missing a definition. Now here is the problem, I don't have a 'config.h' for sudo. The only config.h's are for my own c programs. Anybody able to help this gray haired old fogey out please? Thank You in advance.
  11. Just in case the -l is a lower-case L ;)
  12. If you have installed from the Live CD then you could well have the slideshow running for the background. Unless you have changed your background of course. You could run top in a shell and see if anything pops up at the correct interval. Aprt from that I'm probably talking rubbish. :D
  13. Probably a silly question but I'll ask anyway, why are you using 'cooker'? Are you in a rush for Mandriva 2009 or something?
  14. Sorry my mistake there it's been a while since I went through all this. Try connecting to the server without a password. i.e. mysqladmin -u root If no password has been set you should connect. If you get an error then a password has been set.
  15. Without writing a quite long howto I will try and explain what it is you are attempting. To help you, if you enter mysqladmin --help on the command line you will get quite a comprehensive list of commands and options. Also there is a man page which explains even more. To get you on your way the first command to enter is mysqladmin -u root --password yourrootsqlpassword Please note the -- before password. With this command you are setting the password for root, out of the box mysql does not have a password set. In the second command sequence until you have configured the server to run on your network it is always run on 'localhost'. To make life easier for you there is an RPM in the repos call mysqladministrator, which is a graphical frontend for just what you are doing. For even further information the website http://www.mysql.com/ has all the docs online for most of the versions available, beware though because mysql is a very complicated and powerful database machine. If that is not enough there are forums on the subject as well accessible from their home page. Good Luck
  16. I have just tried your website and without agent switcher lying to them I just got an advert for IE. When I used the agent switcher and lied that I was using IE7 then the advert disappeared. Seems like they are on the payroll. You should be able to use the site. Maybe a good idea to update firefox though as a few things have been fixed in the later version.
  17. The command is transfugdrake and you need to launch as root, not an ordinary user. Welcome to the board.
  18. I would think cable rather than death at this point. I suffered with the same symptoms a couple of years back and a disconnect and reconnect of the ide cable at the drive end sorted it. No problems since as of yet. Good luck.
  19. You might find this helpful John.
  20. Mandriva on my mainpc, mandriva on my old compaq pc, mandriva on my old lappy and winxp on another compaq which I haven't used in ages. So I put mixed. Tried Debian about 5 years ago and it was that that got me into Linux. Found Mandrake/Mandriva, liked it and stuck with it.
  21. If you are using kde you can open the desktop folder to remove all the unwanted bits. If you have only a few icons you want to keep select them and then in the edit menu invert selection. Better than clicking on a lot of others one at a time.
  22. Nice to see I'm not the only plonker then. :P Neddie your prize was going to be a mars bar, but, after I had scraped the muck off when it fell in the pig pen I found the horse had chewed too much off the end. Ah well it's the thought that counts. :D
  23. Neddie gets the prize. That's the first time I ever noticed that gottcha. Thank You Solved.
  24. I thought it was about time I asked about this little problem I have that certain apps and their dependencies are not listed when I do a search in MCC, fully updated via easy urpmi, yet I can still install them from the cli. It came to my attention yesterday when I wanted to re-install mysql. Went to mcc to install it with the associated libs and it wasn't listed  so I refreshed all the sources from easy urpmi and it still didn't come up. Shucks I thought no more mysql, so I tried the cli, as in 'urpmi mysql', and lo and behold I got the lot. Have I missed something along the way, anybody?
