  1. Either one is quite nice and will suffice! :D I recently downloaded 2006 Beta 3 and was quite pleased with it. Compared to LE2005, it boots quicker, seems more responsive, no problems with it so far. Of course, though, it's a beta so you'll have a lot of updates to download (there's a beta 4 coming up soon) and will face an upgrade to official version when released. Here's the schedule: http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/MandrivaLinux2006 Here's a recent review of Beta 3: http://distroreviews.com/index.php?view=109 So, take your pick!
  2. If you've typed about:config in the address bar, filtered for nglayout, and it's not in the list, you can add it by: right-clicking in the preference list window, select New Integer, enter preference name, then enter integer value. Note that there is controversy about whether this nglayout.initialpaint.delay setting actually helps or hinders overall performance. You've heard the pro side, here's one posting on the con side: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/007164.html
  3. Since eth1 is on-board, you should be able to disable it in the BIOS.

    2006 Beta 3 Problem

No, I just misunderstood. Possibly a bootloader problem? If you've got the install CDs, you could boot from CD1 and go into rescue mode. At the menu, press F1, and enter rescue at the command line. That will take you to a menu where you have several options, such as "Reinstall Bootloader", "Reinstall Windows Bootloader (if you're dual booting and chose to overwrite the MBR using lilo), and "Mount Partitions under /mnt". What did you choose for the booloader option when you installed? MBR? You could try the Reinstall Bootloader option. If that doesn't work, you could try the "Mount Partitions under /mnt" and go in and poke around at the command line to see if you can see anything wrong with /etc/lilo/conf, or other system configuration files. This post gives instructions on how to do that: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...ndpost&p=199513 Since it's happened to you twice (with both an update and full install), something strange may be going on. I've installed 2006 Beta 3 and had no problems (I chose the floppy bootloader option). The fact that you can't even get a bootloader menu makes me think something is borked with the bootloader.
  5. Well, you're supposed to be able to use rec and sox for this. Download the sox package if they're not already installed. There are man pages for them. Audio card has to support full duplex. BUT, I never was able to get these to work. I could get them to create output files, but they were just static. Don't know what the missing ingredient is. Maybe you'll have better luck.

    2006 Beta 3 Problem

I suggest trying the following to see if it works: From the boot menu, select the Failsafe option. This will establish whether or not you can boot into the command line okay (I think this takes you to init 1, which is single-user mode as root). Run the XFdrake tool and re-configure until you get a positive test screen response. Reboot with normal boot option. Others may suggest additional things to do, but this is a reasonable first step.
  7. Yup, rumors swirling. Nothing concrete reported yet AFAIK. from: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews...rcurynews_local "One theory has Google buying Skype, the Internet phone service that is rumored to be on the block for as much as $3 billion.|
  8. Here's another thank you, John, for that great tip on filelight. Just installed it, and it is nice! First thing I'm gonna do is poke around in /var with it.

    Mandriva 2006

Mandriva Linux 2006 Beta 3 Reviewed http://distroreviews.com/index.php?view=109 I had Beta 2 installed, did an update just now and got 165 packages updated for the Beta 3 changes. Only problem I had - the mouse quit working but in harddrake, I changed to ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse from the default Any PS/2 or USB Mouse and it immediately began working again (without having to shut down and restart).
  10. Even scanning with the Epson multi-function printer/scanner/copier machines can work with xsane. I have an Epson CX6600 and scanning works great on both 10.1 and LE2005.
  11. Quicktime audio did not work on my installs until I did what's described in this post: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...ndpost&p=192229 Don't know what underlying codec is involved, but this seemed to be the missing link for me.
  12. kdevelop-3.1.2-10mdk.i586.rpm is in the Mandriva LE2005 main repository. For example, I see it at: ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...586/media/main/ I'd suggest you set up your Media repository accordingly. You can use the Easy-Urpmi link at the top of the page to find other mirrors. I'd also set up repositories for contrib, jpackage, PLF-free, and PLF-nonfree in addition to main. Then all your dependencies should be found and automatically installed when you select this kdevelop package.
  13. Thanks for your followup post, doody. And please consider sticking around here and keep reading and posting - it's one of the best ways there is to learn linux.
  14. This should be of help: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_mandrake_10_2
  15. Since this thread is about keeping a system log and documenting your customizations for future reference/rescue, I'd like to cross-reference this related post: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...ndpost&p=201459
  16. Don't know why you wouldn't have /dev/ttyS0, which is serial port 1. Issue the following command: dmesg | grep tty When I do that, I get: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A Gotta go. Heading out for the weekend. Post what you get from the dmesg command, and somebody should be able to help you. Good luck with it.
  17. Check file /etc/ups/ups.conf You probably have a line that says: port = ttyS0 Change that to: port = /dev/ttyS0 You will probably need to edit the file as the root user. I remember having this very same error message when I set up my ups, until I changed the line to: port = /dev/ttyS0
  18. Thanks. First chance I get, I'll be installing 2006 beta.
  19. To make room for a 2006 Beta install, I resized an existing partition and deleted a swap partition, which had been /dev/hdb6 (I have a swap on the first drive, so didn't need it). original hdb7 --> now hdb6 original hdb8 --> now hdb7 The new partition I created became hdb8. There are no current problems, I've adjusted fstab entries. But now the partition table entries are out of order as can be seen by the 'fdisk -l' out below. Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdb1 * 1 10199 81923436 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hdb2 10200 19929 78156225 5 Extended /dev/hdb5 10200 11767 12588219+ 83 Linux /dev/hdb6 13602 16801 25703968+ 83 Linux /dev/hdb7 16802 19929 25125628+ 83 Linux /dev/hdb8 11768 13600 14723541 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order My question is: Would this cause me any future problems with having the partition table entries out of order? For instance, for the new 2006 install which I want to put on /dev/hdb8, the one that is out of order, will the 2006 install correctly work with hdb8 being out of order? 20. Whatever the Internet connectivity problem is, it should not be because of the firewall, assuming you didn't change the firewall defaults. The default is to allow everything out to the Internet and only allow in what you initiated. DNS? Or perhaps some other network or NIC configuration issue? Have you gone back through the Mandrake Control Center (MCC) configurations that you would have chosen during the install? Usual advice is to post what output you get from the /sbin/ifconfig command and also what you get from: cat /etc/resolv.conf. Is your Internet connection wireless, wired, dial-up or DSL? Regarding not being able to get to your local network, are the other machines running linux or Windows or what? EDIT: Oh, also post the output of /sbin/route. Is the network service set to start at bootup? I think that's a configuration option in MCC, but I'm not in linux right now so I can't verify that. If it's not running, you could issue this command as the root user: service network start If the network service is not set to start at bootup, let us know and we can tell you how to configure that.
  21. A good place to find different mirrors is the Easy-Urpmi link at the top of the web pages here at MUB. http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php

    KMail

Thanks, John. OK, I see, Cooker will be the most cutting-edge and 2006.0 will be more stable (and probably updated from Cooker as packages are tested out). I'll defintely be taking your suggestion. I'll be leaving a LE2005 install (and a 10.1 as well on an older machine) but trying out 2006 Beta 2 on partitions where I've got something else installed right now.
  23. Ooops, I missed a vital clue in your message, so I re-wrote my original message to conform to the facts, not my mis-interpretation. Sorry for the mixup.
  24. Here's what probably happened: Let's say that one of your linux partitions was the 3rd logical drive in the extended partition on your hard drive. That would be, in linux terms, /dev/hda7. You probably had a Windows partition as either the 1st or 2nd logical drive on that extended partition. That would be /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda6 in linux terms. Now you break that Windows partition into two - let's say that was the 2nd logical drive in the extended partition, or /dev/hda6. Now you have a smaller /dev/hda6 and that second Windows partition that you created by splitting the first into two, then becomes /dev/hda7. Now what had been your a linux partition on /dev/hda7 gets bumped up to /dev/hda8. Linux starts to boot, and trys to find an ext2 file system on /dev/hda7 but it doesn't find it, because that now is the new Windows partition you created. Your original linux partition on /dev/hda7 is now /dev/hda8. How to recover? Well, you're going to get several opinions probably. The answers will depend on what you reply to the following important questions: To provide guidance to you, please answer how you are booting linux - from a boot loader floppy, or are you booting from the hard drive? Are you using lilo or grub to boot linux? Also, do you have the original Mandriva CD1, which you could boot from to go into rescue mode? Post those answers and wait to see what various people say and then proceed accordingly to your tastes. I doubt that your linux partition is ruined, it's just in the wrong place after splitting that windows partition. But if it is, then you may have to re-install linux. EDIT: re-written because I mis-interpreted toxic's original post.
  25. Yeah, but not on many of the mirrors yet. Many of them still use Mandrakelinux or some Mandrake reference rather than Mandriva. I guess that will cause a whole bunch of urpmi problems for folks when, and if, they ever change.
