Qchem
Sorry if this has already been answered, but what are you trying to use to play the cd's?
luke9511
the default cd player that comes with gnome,im not sure of the name of it
Qchem
It might be worth playing with xmms, it has loads more options for trying to play such things, including one for situations where there isn't an analogue connection between the cd-rom drive and the soundcard. luke9511
the only problem is that its for KDE and im using gnome
ianw1974
It will run in gnome, as will all apps. Like gnome apps can run in kde too. There's no problem doing that. As far as I know, xmms is not a kde app as such.
luke9511
well i know kaffeine need kde cause i tryed to install it and it said it was looking for some sort of kde config file
ianw1974
Mandriva works on dependencies. Chances are for kaffeine to work, it requires a kde dependency for some reason. This doesn't necessarily mean that kaffeine is for kde, it's just the way mandriva has been set up to use certain dependencies. If the source was downloading from kaffeine and then compiled on your machine, it'd work fine. But it's just more hassle, than actually installing the rpm and letting it install the dependencies. Qchem
xmms isn't for kde, it's a general x-windows app that will run in pretty much any WM/DE.
luke9511
how do i get a usb flash drive to work on mandrake?
JonEberger
hi. just out of curiosity...perhaps i missed this. do you have an ifcfg-wlan0 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts? it should contain entries like ONBOOT=yes ESSID=(your school's name) CHANNEL=(xx) (normally numbered 1-11) DEVICE=wlan0 TYPE=wireless BOOTPROTO=dhcp and potentially some other stuff. i've got a broadcom wireless nic working on my wife's dell through ndiswrapper. i'm a student at ncsu and the wireless connection requires dhcp (no channel specification) and then you get browsed to a website to log onto using my id and password. maybe your school has an it dept. that is willing to tell you what you need to use their wireless network, too. luke9511
that im not sure of EDIT:heres whats in the file DEVICE=wlan0 BOOTPROTO=none ONBOOT=no HWADDR=00:14:a4:79:6a:04 METRIC=10 MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no WIRELESS_MODE=Managed WIRELESS_ESSID=any Edited February 9, 2006 by luke9511
ianw1974
Normally, to get a usb flash working, all you need to do is make sure you have HardDrake running, and it'll pick it up as soon as you plug it in. To use your wireless, your going to need to know the settings, so that you can gain access to the access point and use it. Else, you'll find it very difficult indeed, especially if the access-point has been secured.
