  5. ok so i switched over to ubuntu and i have to say i love it, works alot better with my older machines than mandriva did though i still like mandriva, but anyway, im trying to install updated video card drivers for my laptop under ubuntu but when i do what it says to do i get this if anyone knows whats going on please let me know
  6. nope not in there, but the strange thing is, that alsa can detect the card and it seems to load a driver for it, but it doesnt work
  7. i did that command in the console and i didnt get any errors
  8. question, is there a reason why my ISA sound card i not in sounddrak, but yet alsa detected it and loaded a driver for it but yet i cant hear sound? and everything is not muted
  9. ok heres an update, been working on the whole alsa problem on and off and still havent got it fixed, i tryed to install the latest version but it wont install, so if anyone has any advice please let me know, thanks.
  10. ok i got mandriva 2007 free installed and it works good but alsa is not working and its installed, tryed doing alsaconf and it says bash: alsaconf: command not found which is weird since its installed etc
  11. well i downloaded and am burning the free version of mandriva 2007, so i guess we will find out how well it will run
  12. yes im running 10.1 and i posted in one of the other forums on this site asking if i should upgrade or not, since i only use this for learning but since i cant seem to get alsa updated and/or get my sound card working looks like im gonna have to update
  13. hmmm that didnt seem to work and also something that i keep forgetting to post is that, my sound card doesnt show up in MCC for some strange reason, the only thing i can think of is that the sound card is ISA, but thanks for the advice
  14. hey all sorry for not updatting but i been sick and stuff so yeah but anyway, i have following this page to get alsa updated click here also sorry for any typos in this post, now im not able to update my copy of mandriva cause of my processer, i think thats the error i get when i try to update, its a 600mhz P3
  15. my current alsa version is 1.0.6 and i have already done the urpmi and it couldnt update updates and i got use the update thing in mandriva cause of my computers processer i think(its a 600mhz intel P3)
  16. ok after getting the above error fixed im not getting more, as there to many to post heres a couple of them *** NO PREDEFINED KERNEL COMPILER IS DETECTED *** Assuming the same compiler is used with the current system compiler. *** Please make sure that the same compiler version was used for building kernel. make[4]: *** [/home/trey/alsa-driver-1.0.13/acore/sound.o] Error 1 make[3]: *** [/home/trey/alsa-driver-1.0.13/acore] Error 2 make[2]: *** [_module_/home/trey/alsa-driver-1.0.13] Error 2 make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1-12mdk' make: *** [compile] Error 2 snyonr know this means?
  17. yes im behind a router and i use this to learn, i guess having my sound not working is kind of a good thing for me since, with the help of the people of this forum, i might be able to get it to work and in the process learn more about linux, cause thats what i want to do is learn, im in college right now at ITT Tech and am in the game design course and im pretty sure that i dont get a linux class of any kind, even know as much as i would like too, so this way and the net is the only way for me to learn linux in my spare time and i dont host servers on linux and thank you and anyone else who may reply for your advice and comments and i would like to hear more for people on this subject so that it can give me ideas and such.
  18. ok after been trying to update alsa and getting my sound card to work and everything and someone said that my version of mandriva is (which is version 10.1) a security risk and that i should upgrade, now first i want to know,is that true? and is there any reasons why i should, cause i kinda dont want too, so please give me some advice.
  19. ok i dont know if this goes here or not but here it goes, so im trying to install an updated version of alsa and when i go to install it and i do the ./configure commmand i get this checking for kernel linux/version.h... no The file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h does not exist. Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel sources (default is /usr/src/linux). can anyone tell me what this means and how to fix it? and thanks in advance for any help/advice
  20. ok i think i spoke to soon, when i go to test the sound i get an error, have been trying to get the error back but it wont come back for some reason, but i can play and hear cds, but if i play a mp3 i get a ticking sound in the speakers and also i can hear sounds from videos on the net, i looked in another post about the online video thing and the option someone gave to fix it didnt work for me, so if anyone else has some advice please let me know
  21. ok i got it to work, just had to switch out the sound card for another one, but thanks for the help/advice
