  1. There's to be an attempt to set a new Guiness World Record for the most software downloads in 24hrs. For those of you who might be interested in helping FireFox3 reach its goal, see www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord. Download Day starts on June 17th at 10:00 PDT, which is 17:00 GMT/UTC. Check this out for local times: tinyurl.com/4e7fv5.
  2. You don't need the /. There is another way, open your home folder, click into the ndiswrapper-1.53 folder then press F4, this should bring up a konsole at your current location.
  3. The best place to unpack zips, tgz or whatever is your home directory, that way you will always know where to look for them. If you have unpacked the ndiswrapper-1.53.tar.gz, in the directory is an Install text file. Follow the instructions there to install the newer version. You will need to have the Kernel-Source files installed for this to work. In the konsole do uname -r, make a note of the kernel version, then use the package manager in the Mandriva Control Centre, type kernel-source, click search, go down the list and select the kernel source that matches the kernel version you made a note of. Once this is installed you can go ahead and follow those install instructions.
  4. You need the Mandriva Control Centre and not the KDE Control Centre. Do Alt & F2 and put mcc, click run, input your root password and press enter. Go to Network & Internet--> Setup a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...) there you will see Wireless follow the wizards directions. If this should fail, for the ndiswrapper to work, you will need to unpack (unzip) the .tgz, try right clicking it and you should see an extract here option. Using ndiswrapper browse to the folder and it should take if from there.
  5. Pitivi: http://www.pitivi.org/wiki/Main_Page is another nice, simple, easy to use video tool.
  6. If you prefer to use GUI, then look at Peazip: http://peazip.sourceforge.net/
  7. Just what I needed. Thanks
  8. Distro elitism/snobbery call it what you will, has and will always exist. If A,B,C is ashamed to admit they use Mandriva that's their hang-up. They are the same ones who would be ashamed to admit they still use Winblows too!! Mandriva is a popular distro and has a huge following. I can't even count the amount of times I go into forums and as far I can see Fedora problems dominate the threads. Like you I too have tried countless distros, but only two have instantly made me feel welcome and comfortable using them Mandriva (Mandrake as it was back then) and PCLinuxOS (I know it's a fork of Mandriva). I know they have crappy customer care, even so they still have a great following. It's all a bit of a nonesense aurgument because underneath all the gloss they are all the same GNU/Linux.
  9. I tried your suggestion and I got I can ping that address though.
  10. Now why didn't I notice that! :) Ah, thanks for clearing that up sjaglin
  11. What's the difference between TinyMe & MiniMe? I've had MiniMe 2008 for a good few months now.
  12. Thanks for responding Greg2. Oh how I wish it was just a firewall issue. I've checked my firewall (Smoothwall) the port is not being blocked, and I have no other app(s) running on this (or any other) machine that use port 2628. I have also checked all machines (firewall included) using netstat and again port 2628 is not in use. Is there a possiblility my isp could be blocking this port? Is there a way I could check if this is the case?
  13. Is anyone else having a problem with kdict? It no longer seems to function. I only get the message: It has been like this since Mandriva 2008. I have done a fresh install of 2008.1 and still the problem remains. It's not a distro issue as I have seen queries from other distro users about this same problem. Does anyone know what the deal is?
  14. To the top right of this board, you will see an Easy-Urpmi link. Click it, and follow the instructions on that site to setup what you require.
  15. That is a Karamba theme. You'll need to have Karamba installed to use it. Type as root: urpmi superkaramba. Once installation is complete type: Alt & F2 then type superkaramba to start it up. Click the new stuff button, in the centre of the browser window that opens up, find and click on the latest tab, you will now see the theme listed, select it and click install. Once installed, close the browser window and double click the new entry that you see in the main superkaramba window to start the theme running.
  16. Or do Alt & F2, type mcc, press enter, input your root password. Go to the Install and Remove Software section (make sure you select All and not Packages with GUI in the top left drop-down box), now type: lsb in the search box and check what version you have installed (if any). If it is lower than 3.1 then install the 3.1 version.
  17. This should read I hope you don't mind, I've corrected your typos for the sake of accuracy. :)
  18. Or you can do it via the Mandriva Control Centre--> System--> Import Windows documents and settings.
  19. Sorry to hijack this thread. I take it you are referring to transfugdrake? If so can you please let me know (a step-by-step would be nice) how you got it to work.
  20. Take a look at the CompizFusion Wiki, you'll find plenty of hints and tips there. http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/
  21. I've gone through your Smart doc rewrite and failed to see any info on importing public keys. Will this be covered (I assume the rewrite is not yet complete) in due course?
  22. The man that brought us the ReiserFS is found guilty of first degree murder. Read more about it here: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/04/r...r-guilty-o.html
  23. You did log out and select KDE4 from the menu at the login screen?
